Background / History

Life at the White Tiger Duke’s Estate

Huo Lingtong grew up at the White Tiger Duke’s Estate, rarely leaving except to gather wild fruit or catch fish to supplement her meals. She had never attended school, and most of her knowledge of the outside world came from her mother and conversations within the estate. Years of malnutrition left her unusually small and physically depleted 15 16.

The injustice she suffered there became the basis of her desire for revenge. She believed that becoming a powerful Soul Master was necessary to confront the estate, and was prepared to compensate for her poor talent through greater effort 27 29.

Meeting Nan Zhuliu and Skydream Iceworm

While seeking her first Soul Ring alone near Star Dou Great Forest, Huo Lingtong encountered the injured Nan Zhuliu and bandaged his wounds. He offered to help her find a suitable Soul Ring. After learning her name and Martial Soul, he recognized her as this era’s female counterpart to Huo Yuhao, the protagonist of the original story 13.

Skydream Iceworm then appeared and chose her as the host of a Million-Year Wisdom Soul Ring. Although frightened, Huo Lingtong first questioned what the iceworm had done to Nan Zhuliu, whom Skydream claimed to have knocked unconscious. The fusion left her collapsed across him; upon waking, she discovered that she had successfully obtained her first ring 13 14.

When Tang Ya and Bei Bei arrived, Nan Zhuliu helped her acknowledge obtaining a ring without revealing Skydream’s existence. Huo Lingtong credited him with helping her acquire it and declined their invitation to travel together, choosing to remain with him 15.

Journey to Shrek Academy

Nan Zhuliu explained that the Body Sect possessed a second-awakening method suited to her Martial Soul, but its elusive whereabouts made immediate entry impractical. He instead suggested attending an academy and taught her a meditation circulation route that substantially increased her cultivation speed 15.

The pair traveled to Shrek City, fishing and cultivating along the way. There, Nan Zhuliu bought her clothes and introduced her to his parents, Nan Zhou and Jiang Jingyan. Their concern deeply moved her: apart from her mother, she had never received such care 16.

Nan Zhuliu subsequently introduced her to Wang Yan. With Nan Zhuliu’s help obtaining a custom grill, Huo Lingtong opened a stall outside Shrek Academy to support herself. Despite initially doubting the price of one silver soul coin per fish, she sold out her first hundred fish and counted ninety-six silver soul coins in earnings that day 19 20.

She refused to restock once her planned quota was sold, preserving time for cultivation. After classes began, she reduced sales to thirty fish daily. She also declined Tang Ya’s request for a fish when all thirty had already been promised to waiting customers 20 27.

A dispute over her prices escalated when a gold soul coin was hurled at her. Although her Spirit Eyes let her perceive it, she could not physically react. Nan Zhuliu intercepted the coin and defended her, leading to his duel with Xu Sanshi 22 23.

Academy Studies and Department Choice

Assigned to Zhou Yi’s Class One, Huo Lingtong barely completed the teacher’s hundred-lap exercise before the deadline. Zhou Yi and Fan Yu later discussed moving her into the Soul Tool Department once her abilities met their requirements 25 26 27.

Huo Lingtong preferred the Martial Soul Department because of her revenge objective. Nan Zhuliu advised her to secure core-disciple status so that her homeroom teacher could not expel her at will. He also acknowledged her suitability for Soul Tools rather than dismissing that path outright 27.

At Sea God Lake, she and Wang Dong were endangered by Ma Xiaotao’s uncontrolled evil fire before Nan Zhuliu defeated her. The academy’s subsequent demand that they forget the incident or face expulsion reminded Huo Lingtong of the contempt for human life she had experienced at the duke’s estate 28 29.

Through perseverance, she became Class One’s monitor within three months. As the freshman assessment approached, she remained concerned about being forced into the Soul Tool Department, but resolved to pass and become a Martial Soul Department core disciple 30.

Huo Lingtong is initially shy with strangers and easily embarrassed by attention. Nevertheless, she readily helps others: she treats Nan Zhuliu before knowing him and later looks for opportunities to repay his assistance through her cooking 13 16.

Poverty makes her cautious with money. Even after receiving tuition assistance, she chooses plain rice and greens because she cannot yet earn an income. Her restraint also extends to business: she prioritizes cultivation over additional sales and honors existing customers’ places rather than favoring an acquaintance 19 20 27.

She develops a strong attachment to Nan Zhuliu. His repeated dinners with someone else leave her hurt and uneasy, but she keeps those feelings private because she does not believe she has the right to question his friendships 22 24.

Her modest assessment of her talent does not lessen her determination. She pursues revenge through sustained work, while her reaction to the Sea God Lake cover-up shows that admission to Shrek has not erased her resentment toward abuse of power 27 29 30.
