| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full innate Soul Power — rank 10 | 1 5 | Awakens the Angel and Gate of Babylon Martial Souls. Initially cannot summon at least two-thirds of the Gate’s stored Martial Souls because his Soul Power is insufficient. |
| Rank 16 Soul Master | 21 24 | Reached after absorbing a roughly four-hundred-year Soul Ring from a sacred-attribute Soul Beast for his Angel Martial Soul. His simultaneous possession-type Martial Soul limit rises from two to sixteen. |
| Rank 17 Soul Master | 42 | Confirmed after enrolling at Spirit Hall Academy. Defeats a Soul Elder in less than three seconds despite the difference in rank. |
Background
Jing Shanshan was adopted by an ordinary couple who run a small shop in Spirit City. Neither parent is a Soul Master. When they found him, a book titled The King’s Cultivation and Character was pressed against his chest 1 6.
He learned to read at three, read extensively at four, and decided at five to become a king like the figure described in the book. Before awakening his Martial Souls, he practiced royal speech and conduct alone in a deserted warehouse district to avoid embarrassing himself in public 1 5.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Blond hair and golden eyes. For his first Soul Ring expedition, he wears his hair combed straight back 2 13.
- Clothing: A clean white robe prepared by his parents; its fabric is ordinary rather than aristocratic 12 27.
- Martial Soul manifestation: His Angel Martial Soul unfolds golden-white wings and gives him a sacred presence 1 7.
- Disguise: The bronze mask Faceless and Formless obscures his face, presence, and figure without making observers regard the concealment as unusual 6.
Personality
Jing Shanshan consciously models himself on his book’s ideal monarch. He calls himself “this king,” expects deference, and treats serving others or publicly asking for help as threats to his dignity. Praise pleases him, but he tries to suppress visibly childish excitement 1 8 11.
Interest is his strongest incentive. He rejects Qian Renxue’s offers of wealth, power, and the position of Pontiff, yet agrees to visit Qian Daoliu because he wants to see what their encounter will produce. He also refuses unsolicited knowledge of the future, believing that knowing what comes next would make life dull 1 2 12.
His confidence conceals ordinary childhood fear. After nearly dying during his encounter with Qian Daoliu, he privately shakes and cries, then reassures himself that his dignity remains intact because nobody saw him. The experience strengthens his determination to become more powerful 5.
He is observant and experimental, studying emotional reactions as carefully as Martial Soul mechanics. This insight can become cruelty: he dismantles Yu Xiaogang’s stated motives and later admits that he intended to beat Tang San nearly to death and leave survival to the latter’s resilience 9 32 33 38.
Abilities & Skills
Angel Martial Soul
His first Martial Soul is a top-tier Angel, within which the consciousness of a future Qian Renxue resides for unexplained reasons 1.
- Manifestation produces golden-white wings and a sacred aura 1 7.
- Allows Qian Renxue to perceive the outside world; withdrawing it cuts off that view unless she has access to the Shadow Doll Puppet 2 9 35.
- Receives a roughly four-hundred-year Soul Ring from a sacred-attribute Soul Beast 21 24.
Gate of Babylon
His second Martial Soul is a storage space containing prototypes of Tool Martial Souls, items, and techniques or technologies from ancient times to the present. Its contents emerge through golden spatial ripples 1 35.
- Weapon barrages: Launches hundreds of Martial Souls at once, although mass deployment consumes enormous amounts of Soul Power 8.
- Storage: Holds personal belongings, tokens, and accumulated wealth 1 3 26.
- Regeneration: Destroyed stored Martial Souls can recover, but repairing them continuously drains Soul Power and slows his recovery 10 27.
- New prototypes: Discovers that at least a third of Tang San’s displayed devices are already recorded within the Gate. He deduces that their first appearance on the continent qualifies them as prototypes 35.
- Access limits: Low Soul Power prevents him from using many powerful contents. Increasing their output also increases their consumption 1 8 24.
- Knowledge limits: He possesses only a general understanding of the treasury and must search and test individual contents to learn their precise effects 8.
- Soul Ring problem: Rings absorbed through the Shadow Doll Puppet shatter when it is recalled; his own subsequent test produces the same failure 21.
Soul Power Suppression
Certain stored restraints scale their suppression according to the opponent’s Soul Power rather than requiring a matching expenditure from Jing Shanshan 1.
- Briefly restrains Qian Daoliu, though the intended ten-second suppression lasts less than three seconds 3.
- A shackle instantly suppresses Tang Hao’s Soul Power and interrupts his attack 40.
- Tang Hao subsequently breaks free, overloading the shackle and causing a backlash 41.
Kingship Crown
The Kingship Crown controls gravity around itself, with the pressure increasing as a target approaches 13.
- Forces Zhou Ding, Chen Feng, and Liu Yaya to their knees 13.
- Suppressing Yan requires multiple Martial Souls and substantial Soul Power rather than the crown alone 13.
- Applies gravitational interference against Yu Xiaogang and Tang Hao 32 40.
Shadow Doll Puppet and Possession
The Shadow Doll Puppet provides Qian Renxue with a physical body. It also lets Jing Shanshan maintain his Shi Lang identity separately from his public persona 9 11 14.
- Can share the puppet’s perspective, though viewing through it and his own body simultaneously initially disorients him 14.
- Grants Qian Renxue temporary freedom to direct the puppet herself 25.
- Notices a small Soul Power increase after recalling the puppet following Qian Renxue’s cultivation. He proposes further tests; a doubled cultivation speed remains only a possibility 35.
Other possession-type Martial Souls let him borrow a target’s body and Soul Power 24.
- At rank 16, stacks sixteen possession effects with dozens of amplifications to control the critically weakened Chrysanthemum Douluo 24.
- Using Yue Guan’s reserves unlocks normally inaccessible Martial Souls and raises their effects toward Titled Douluo strength 24.
- The arrangement can safely last thirty minutes under those conditions. Possessing a healthy Titled Douluo would ordinarily provoke resistance capable of defeating the attempt 24.
Martial Soul Detonation
Qian Renxue teaches him to detonate a Tool Martial Soul for a temporary surge of Soul Power, adapting principles drawn from the Great Sumeru Hammer and her shattered divine position 10.
- Learns the technique through careful mental simulations 10.
- Can replace shattered weapons because the Gate’s contents regenerate 10.
- Repeated detonations create a repair burden that severely reduces his subsequent Soul Power recovery 10 27.
Support and Healing
He combines numerous support-type Martial Souls to amplify allies and other stored tools 8 20.
- Buffs Qian Renxue with dozens of support effects before she kills a roughly two-hundred-year Rock-Breathing Tortoise 20.
- Enhances the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger before its one-strike defeat of Zhao Wuji 36.
- Uses healing tools on Chrysanthemum Douluo, the tiger, and Yu Xiaogang; in the latter case, he heals only enough to keep Yu Xiaogang conscious 23 25 32.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
These include personal possessions and tools retrieved through the Gate of Babylon.
- The King’s Cultivation and Character — His most cherished possession and the source of his royal ideals. He places it inside the Gate for safekeeping immediately after awakening 1.
- Faceless and Formless — A cracked bronze mask used to conceal his identity and support his more approachable Shi Lang persona 6 11.
- Flame-absorbing greatsword — A black blade with dark-red cracks and a diamond-shaped guard gem that stores absorbed flames. Its gem is nearly full after his demonstration against Yan 7.
- Mountain-Cleaving Sword — Also called Divine Construct, the Jade Horizon That Cleaves a Thousand Mountains. Uses the concept of separating heaven and earth to cut targets, potentially including intangible things; its practical performance remains constrained by his strength 22 23.
- Spirit-Luring Cauldron — Attracts nearby creatures, particularly those with lower cultivation. Its range expands with the Soul Power invested 15 16.
- A Dou Spiked Club — Beats away the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s intelligence, helping render it vulnerable to being collared 25.
- Soul Beast collars — Shrink the tiger and tortoise into apparent pets. At his rank-16 output, each collar has three forced commands, which must specify concrete actions to work 25.
- Vimana — A flying Martial Soul used for searching the forest and traveling between cities 20 21 33.
- Divination coin — Helps direct him toward a suitable sacred-attribute Soul Beast 21.
- Held Pearl — A gold-and-white crystal necklace that accelerates Soul Power recovery, given by a gambling-house steward who wants him to stop visiting 27.
- Angel Clan token — Establishes his cover as an outside nephew of the clan and assists him in obtaining information from Spirit Hall branches 3 30.
- Funding token — A later gift from Qian Daoliu permitting free access to local Spirit Hall branch funds 31.
- Soul Power cylinder and converter — Stores usable energy. An attachment converts other Soul Masters’ contributions into pure, attribute-free energy, offering an alternative to repeated Martial Soul detonations 42.
Relationships
- Qian Renxue — The future former Angel God whose consciousness inhabits his Angel Martial Soul. She advises, teaches, and protects him while seeking his help to change Spirit Hall’s fate. He regards her as a subordinate, though his unpredictability repeatedly disrupts her planning 1 10 18 30 42.
- Adoptive parents — Ordinary shopkeepers who insist on securing professional help for his first Soul Ring. His father disciplines his public arrogance with a rattan cane; his mother describes him as filial at home 6 11.
- Qian Daoliu — Qian Renxue’s grandfather. Initially a dangerous encounter, their connection develops into practical support through an Angel Clan identity and access to Spirit Hall funds 3 5 31.
- Hu Liena — Protects his disguised persona from Yan, takes him to the central library, and arranges his first Soul Ring expedition. She finds his undisguised royal behavior much harder to tolerate 7 11 42.
- Yan — Initially challenges him and resents his manner toward Hu Liena, but also appreciates arrogance backed by ability 7 13.
- Xie Yue — Helps restrain Yan and accompanies the Soul Ring expedition; later joins Hu Liena and Yan in showing Jing Shanshan around Spirit Hall Academy 7 14 42.
- Dark Demon Evil God Tiger / Little Black — A sixty-thousand-year predator that initially targets him. After subduing and collaring it, he keeps it in black-cat form as a pet, mount, and combat protector 18 25 35 38.
- Rock-Breathing Tortoise — A collared Soul Beast companion carried in miniature form 25.
- Tang San — An enemy whom Jing Shanshan wounds for disrespecting him. Tang San’s hostility toward him precedes their direct clash 34 35 37.
- Tang Hao — Attacks him after Tang San’s injuries. Jing Shanshan chooses to test his abilities rather than immediately flee 38 40.
- Yu Xiaogang — A prospective source of Martial Soul knowledge whom Jing Shanshan rejects as inadequate, defeats, and confronts about his motives for teaching geniuses 30 32 33.
- Ning Rongrong — Becomes interested in him and his pet, leaves Shrek after his departure, and follows her treasure-sensing intuition toward Spirit City in pursuit of him 34 35 37 38.
