Background
Tang San comes from Holy Soul Village and has lived two lives. His previous-life experience gives him unusually keen senses, though he remains awkward in unfamiliar social situations 3 6 12.
His father is Tang Hao, the Clear Sky Douluo. Despite this powerful parentage, Tang San grows up in poverty: the money Tang Hao earns from occasional forging goes toward alcohol, and Tang San brings homemade coarse flatbreads to the academy to avoid going hungry. Tang Hao secretly follows and protects him during this early period 7 8 10.
Appearance
- Patched clothing: Wears patchwork clothes when formally becoming Yu Xiaogang’s disciple 5.
- Blue clothing: Appears as a blue-clad boy during Yu Xiaogang and Wang Zongchang’s approach to Lin Mo 14.
Personality
Tang San prefers the title “dorm leader” to “boss” and initially hesitates to challenge Xiao Wu because he dislikes the idea of bullying a girl. After she defeats him, he openly acknowledges his loss and hands over leadership 6 7.
His loyalty to Yu Xiaogang can override his obligations to others. He breaks Dorm Seven’s promise to conceal Charmander’s hatching because he hopes the unusual Martial Soul might help his teacher overcome Luo Sanpao’s limitations. Although visibly guilty, he privately considers the breach acceptable for his teacher’s sake 19 20.
He is confident in his combat ability but struggles with his decisive defeat by Lin Mo. Losing to a rank-ten opponent without a Soul Ring leaves him stunned and unable to immediately accept the result 16 18.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses two tool Martial Souls: Blue Silver Grass and Clear Sky Hammer 2 31.
- Blue Silver Grass: His demonstrated combat Martial Soul. Its first Soul Ring greatly improves its toughness and strength 16.
- Clear Sky Hammer: Confirmed as his second Martial Soul, but no use of it is shown in the supplied passages 2.
- Physical limitation: His tool Martial Souls provide less physical enhancement than beast Martial Souls; Lin Mo’s Body Martial Soul gives Lin Mo superior physical attributes 31.
First Soul Skill: Entanglement
His hundred-year Mandala Snake Soul Ring grants Entanglement, allowing him to direct thick strands of Blue Silver Grass at a target 16 17.
- Attacks from several directions to restrain an opponent 17.
- Can be combined with evasive footwork and repeated attacks from changing angles 17.
- Is strongly countered by Charmander’s Ember, which burns through even his ring-strengthened grass 17.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
Tang San’s internal cultivation technique provides bodily protection 7 18.
- Helps him escape injury when Xiao Wu throws him during their first match 7.
- Can be circulated defensively against an incoming attack 18.
- Would not have prevented serious injury from Charmander’s final Ember without Wang Zongchang’s intervention 18.
Purple Demon Eye
Purple Demon Eye enhances his vision and contributes to the development of mental power 6 12.
- Helps him react to Xiao Wu’s opening kick 6.
- Supports his keen perception; he correctly detects Lin Mo’s breakthrough to rank ten 12.
- Cannot fully overcome Charmander’s Smokescreen, which disrupts both his sight and sense of direction 18.
Tang Sect Combat Techniques
Tang San possesses several Tang Sect techniques alongside his Martial Soul abilities 15 17.
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Elusive footwork used to evade, change attack angles, and close distance 17.
- Mysterious Jade Hand and Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: Techniques he intends to use for a direct attack after Entanglement fails against Charmander 17.
- Iron Mountain Lean: A close-range body strike attempted against Xiao Wu; she escapes his grip and counters with a throw 6.
- Sound-based positioning: Attempts to locate his surroundings by sound while retreating through Smokescreen, without successfully avoiding the follow-up attack 18.
Smithing and Hidden Weapons
Tang San works at a smithy outside Nuoding City after obtaining his first Soul Ring 16.
- Uses the work to support himself and obtain access to materials and workspace for forging hidden weapons 16 32.
- Regards the weapons more seriously than Yu Xiaogang and Xiao Wu, who dismiss them as little more than toys 16.
- Agrees not to use hidden weapons in his spar with Lin Mo 16.
Equipment / Items
- Forged hidden weapons: Produces weapons using the smithy’s facilities; the supplied passages do not confirm a specific completed model in his possession 16.
- Bedding and quilt: Receives bedding from Teacher Mo Hen and agrees to push his bed together with Xiao Wu’s so they can share the quilt 7.
- Homemade coarse flatbreads: Brings dry rations to the academy because he cannot readily afford cafeteria meals 8.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and secret protector; identified as Clear Sky Douluo despite living as an impoverished smith 7 8.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Tang San formally becomes his disciple and receives daily instruction outside the academy’s normal classes. His desire to help Yu Xiaogang motivates the disclosure of Lin Mo’s secret 5 9 20.
- Xiao Wu — Roommate, successor as Dorm Seven leader, and frequent companion. She repeatedly defeats him in sparring, shares his quilt, and later criticizes his breach of their promise to Lin Mo 7 20 30 32.
- Lin Mo — Roommate and sparring opponent. Their initially cordial interactions deteriorate after Tang San reveals Charmander’s hatching without permission 6 18 20.
- Wang Sheng — Dormmate and predecessor as dorm leader. Tang San defeats him on arrival; Wang Sheng later confronts him over the leaked secret 5 20.
- Xiao Chenyu — Rival student defeated after Tang San obtains his first Soul Ring. He subsequently avoids antagonizing Tang San and Xiao Wu because of their talent and hundred-year rings 8 9.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival at Nuoding Academy
Tang San enters Nuoding Academy as a working student and formally acknowledges Yu Xiaogang as his teacher. In Dorm Seven, he defeats Wang Sheng and briefly becomes leader before losing the position to Xiao Wu 5 6 7.
After obtaining his first Soul Ring, he defeats Xiao Chenyu during another clash between the academy’s students. He remains enrolled at Nuoding but studies primarily under Yu Xiaogang, an arrangement tacitly permitted by the headmaster because of his exceptional talent 8 9.
Charmander’s Hatching and the Spar
Tang San detects Lin Mo’s rank-ten breakthrough and witnesses the newly hatched Charmander. Despite the dormmates’ agreement to keep the transformation secret, he tells Yu Xiaogang, prompting the teacher and headmaster to investigate 12 14 19.
Yu Xiaogang arranges a spar to assess Charmander. Tang San agrees to the ban on hidden weapons, then uses Entanglement and Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track against the fire-attributed Martial Soul. When repeated binding attempts fail, he tries to close the distance 15 16 17.
Charmander’s Smokescreen disrupts his approach and creates an opening for Ember. Wang Zongchang intervenes to prevent injury and declares Lin Mo the winner 18.
Loss of Dorm Seven’s Trust
When the disclosure becomes public, Tang San claims that he acted out of concern for possible dangers in Lin Mo’s transformation. His private reasoning instead centers on finding a way to help Yu Xiaogang overcome his cultivation bottleneck 20.
Lin Mo rejects the explanation, several dormmates become wary of Tang San, and Xiao Wu openly condemns his decision. Tang San later declines an invitation to Lin Mo’s farewell dinner, saying that he must study with his teacher 20 29.
Events Recalled by Lin Mo
The following developments appear in Lin Mo’s memories, rather than as events reached in Tang San’s current storyline:
- Blue Silver Emperor awakening: An eighty-five-thousand-year Blue Silver King helps stimulate Tang San’s inherited bloodline, producing his Martial Soul’s second awakening. Lin Mo distinguishes this from an evolution caused solely by an external treasure 26.
- Immortal herbs: Tang San obtains herbs at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well. Lin Mo recalls the Aromatic Silk Beauty transforming Ning Rongrong’s Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda into the Nine Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda 26.
- Aid to Ma Hongjun: Provides the Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower to purge Ma Hongjun’s Evil Fire, and later gives him the Ten Headed Fierce Yang Serpent Inner Core on Sea God Island, enabling another Martial Soul transformation 26.
