Background
Daviro is an Iron Warriors veteran who serves the Emperor as a Deathwatch Blackshield. His Blackshield status signifies that he has completely severed ties with his parent Chapter: unlike his squadmates, he bears no former Chapter emblem on his pauldron 19 44.
By his encounter with Sith on Vigilus, Daviro has fought countless wars over three hundred years as an Astartes, spending more than two hundred of those years in the Deathwatch. Siege assaults were his greatest specialty before joining the organization 19 20 23.
Appearance
- Build: A towering armored figure, standing roughly half a body taller than the mortal soldiers around him 20.
- Face: White-bearded, with resolute, sharply defined features 23.
- Service studs: Three gold studs in his head mark his three hundred years as an Astartes 19.
- Armor: Black power armor with a blank black pauldron where his former Chapter’s heraldry would otherwise appear 19.
- Helmet: Red lenses and a cold, electronically transmitted voice 21 25.
Personality
Daviro respects courage demonstrated in battle rather than relying solely on official assessments. Although the Departmento Munitorum classifies Sith’s regiment as expendable cannon fodder, its victory over Steel Pincer earns his attention. He returns Sith’s salute after barely half an hour of acquaintance—recognition he previously granted courageous mortals only after numerous battles together 19.
His respect is selective rather than a general concern for ordinary people. He does not believe Astartes are inherently above mortals, yet often ignores those who have not earned his interest. When helping Sith seize water from the nobles, his motivation is that they have deprived Sith of supplies, not sympathy for the civilian population 27 32 44.
Usually restrained and direct, Daviro tolerates Sith’s frustration without taking offense and protects him from the consequences of executing a governor. His hatred of traitors can overcome that restraint: during the boarding action, he roars the Iron Warriors’ battle cry and attempts a charge that Sith stops by knocking him unconscious 23 45.
Abilities & Skills
Siege Assault and Demolitions
Daviro identifies structural weak points and uses carefully placed explosives to breach heavily fortified entrances 23 32.
- Opens the spire gate using scarce grenades and explosive ammunition, then kicks the weakened gate down in one piece 23.
- Uses Melta Bombs to collapse the Hive City’s external passage and prevent the pursuing Orks from entering 21.
- Breaches a nobles’ fortress by placing Melta Bombs at critical points around its gate 32.
Ranged and Close-Quarters Combat
Daviro fights with a bolter and Chainsword, advancing through enemy formations while providing heavy fire support 25 26 27.
- Shoots incoming rockets out of the air during the Underhive elevator ambush 25.
- Cuts through rebels and Genestealers with his Chainsword 26 27.
- Covers mortal troops entering the Hive City instead of immediately withdrawing through the gate himself 21.
Armored Assault
His ceramite power armor allows him to absorb fire that would be lethal to the mortal soldiers accompanying him 25.
- Cooperates with Sith’s order to use the Astartes as cover during an elevator ambush 25.
- Withstands massed autogun fire and advances into the barrage 25.
- Is not immune to psychic attacks: a Zoanthrope suspends him in midair and induces fear until Sith kills it 26 27.
Reconnaissance and Mission Planning
Daviro gathers intelligence, obtains passage access permissions, and organizes diversions for Deathwatch operations 24 25.
- Uses a secret route from the spire to reach the Underhive while the 101st Regiment attacks above 25.
- Confirms Genestealer involvement in the rebellion and investigates the wider infestation 26.
- Orders withdrawal once the team has established that Vigilus’s corruption is worse than expected 27.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black power armor — His standard protective equipment; he considers Sith’s Artificer Power Armour superior to his own suit 19 32.
- Helmet — Provides communications and a red-lensed faceplate; damaged during the lower-hive operation 20 25 26.
- Bolter — Used against rebels, Genestealers, and Chaos cultists, and to execute the Hive City governor 23 25 45.
- Chainsword — Used in close combat during the Genestealer investigation and withdrawal 26 27.
- Melta Bombs — Used for breaching gates and collapsing passages 21 32.
Relationships
- Sith — Respected mortal commander and eventual “old comrade.” Daviro recognizes his courage, submits the application for his force’s Astra Militarum promotion, and volunteers to accompany his boarding party. Sith saves him from a Zoanthrope and later knocks him unconscious to prevent a fatal charge 19 27 44 45.
- 101st Regiment / Black Watch — Initially assigned as a diversionary force, its soldiers earn Daviro’s trust through repeated battles. By the Underhive mission, he and his surviving squadmate are willing to entrust their backs to Sith’s veterans 19 25.
- Deathwatch squadmates — Leads two fellow Astartes into the Hive City. One is seriously wounded and left at the spire; the other accompanies the reconnaissance mission, during which Sith’s veterans discover a dead Deathwatch warrior 19 22 25 26.
- Calgar — Daviro volunteers for Sith’s regiment under Calgar’s requirement that every boarding party include at least one Astartes 44.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Assault on the Fallen Hive City
Daviro first encounters Sith after the 101st Regiment kills Steel Pincer. Impressed by the poorly equipped regiment’s achievement, he assigns it to draw Ork fire while his Deathwatch squad enters a rebel-held Hive City, but also offers the soldiers a chance to follow him inside 19.
When the nobles’ gate-closing command proves false, Daviro orders the passage destroyed with Melta Bombs. Sith’s veteran rear guard remains outside to hold back the Orks while the survivors continue toward the spire 21.
Further false access codes and rebel ambushes force the group to fight through the hive. Daviro breaches the final gate, then prevents Sith from personally executing the governor. He carries out the execution under the Inquisition’s authority, enabling a smooth transfer of power in the spire 22 23 24.
Underhive Investigation
Daviro recruits Sith and one hundred elite veterans to replace his wounded squadmate’s contribution to a reconnaissance mission. With the main force creating a diversion above, the team captures the governor’s secret Underhive fortress and confirms that Genestealers instigated the rebellion 24 25 26.
Pushing deeper, Daviro breaks away from the mortals and attacks a Zoanthrope, which immobilizes him psychically. Sith kills the creature and frees him. Astonished that Sith and his veterans resisted its mental attacks, Daviro nevertheless returns his attention to the mission and orders a withdrawal with the intelligence they have gathered 26 27.
Continued Service on Vigilus
While stationed at the last human stronghold outside the safe zone, Daviro helps Sith breach a nobles’ fortress to recover water supplies 32.
He later delivers the order formally promoting Sith’s force into the Astra Militarum under the designation Black Watch. Having submitted its application himself, Daviro also volunteers to serve as its Astartes during the planned boarding of the Vengeful Spirit 44.
Boarding Action and Warp Survival
After the boarding craft crashes into a Chaos ship, Daviro and Sith kill the cultists waiting outside. Daviro attempts to charge the fleeing traitors, shouting “Iron Within, Iron Without!” Sith strikes him unconscious with the flat of his Power Sword and orders the troops to seize an enemy boarding craft instead 45.
Daviro is subsequently trapped aboard the damaged Sword-class Frigate when it enters the Warp without a functioning Gellar Field. He survives the two-month ordeal alongside Sith and the remaining Black Watch. After their return to Realspace, he reveals the Great Rift to the soldiers and welcomes Sith to humanity’s 42nd millennium 47 48.
Arrival on Oumia III
Following the frigate’s crash on Oumia III, the locals greet Daviro as an angel sent by the God-Emperor. Rather than accepting their attention as the force’s leader, he steps aside to reveal Sith. He privately wonders whether their arrival has placed them on another world as dangerous as Vigilus 50.
