Power Progression

The following milestones document Lu Guan’s advancement within the realm.

Origins and Access

The Inner Landscape Realm belongs to the path of immortal cultivation rather than being a natural continuation of the three Martial Dao realms. Its proper prerequisite is Refining Essence into Qi, but those cultivation methods are withheld from Great Li and remain among cultivation Aristocratic Clans outside the country 64.

Great Li’s founding emperor created the three Martial Dao realms as an alternative route back to cultivation. The crucial link is Gang Qi’s ability to bring Divine Thought into being, allowing martial artists to meet the prerequisite for opening an Inner Landscape 64.

According to Chen Jingchou, the Inner Landscape cultivation methods available in Great Li and other countries were obtained from demons and fiends. Other countries use routes such as sorcery, gu, and totems, but these have a lower probability of reaching the realm than Great Li’s Martial Dao 64.

Obtaining a Cultivation Method

  • Merit exchange: The remnant soul of one Inner Landscape Realm demon is sufficient to exchange for an Inner Landscape cultivation method 58 59.
  • Oversight: Such exchanges exceed the Merit Bureau director’s authority and are handled by Elder Jiang at the Heaven-Character Secret Vault 58.
  • Martial Tree: Great Li’s thirteen provincial Heaven-Character Secret Vaults connect to the same Martial Tree, whose fruits contain cultivation techniques 59.
  • Selection risk: Elder Jiang warns that pursuing a Grotto-Heaven beyond one’s abilities can consume enough time to destroy the chance of eventually reaching Divine Treasury 59.

Cultivation Mechanics

Opening an Inner Landscape

An Inner Landscape is an inwardly perceived world, not a form visible to the naked eye. A cultivator uses Divine Thought to visualize the Dantian and establish an Inner Landscape Domain within the body 59 62.

  • Divine Thought—also called Divine Sense or Spiritual Sense—is the first prerequisite 62.
  • The chosen cultivation method determines how the inner world is constructed and which domain grade it attains 59 60.
  • Visualization demands comprehension; in Lu Guan’s simulation, persistent effort alone does not produce quick results 63.

Under the True Spirit Indestructible Dao Scripture, Lu Guan visualizes the Five Viscera Gods, manifestations of his own essence, Qi, and spirit. He coordinates them into an internal cycle of heaven and earth, then combines five currents of Qi in the Dantian into an egg-sized, five-colored pill containing the True Spirit Grotto-Heaven 63.

Advancing Through the Heavens

  • Core process: Continually absorb and convert the Qi of heaven and earth to strengthen the inner world. Lu Guan’s Grotto-Heaven cultivation is described as building a tower, adding further Grotto-Heavens as he advances 69.
  • Aptitude: Efficiency in converting heaven-and-earth Qi varies between cultivators 69.
  • Cultivation sites: The Cold Abyss Well’s concentrated Qi helped Chen Jingchou advance rapidly and gain a chance of pursuing Divine Treasury 61.
  • Lu Guan’s limitation: His panel does not benefit from the well’s concentration of Qi, while lengthy simulations risk overwhelming his Divine Thought 72.
  • Perfection: The Tenth Heaven is the completed state of the Inner Landscape Realm 77.

Inner Landscape Domains

Domain quality is a major determinant of strength alongside cultivation level. Elder Jiang states that a First Heaven Grotto-Heaven cultivator can easily defeat a Third Heaven Human Contemplation cultivator 59.

Domain Grade Innate Mysteries Properties
Human Contemplation 0 Enables entry into the realm but provides none of the Mystery benefits possessed by higher-grade domains. Its cultivators are particularly vulnerable to defeat by lower-level opponents 60.
Blessed Land 1 Grants one Mystery. Chen Jingchou’s domain supplies Pacify Mountains and Rivers 60 65.
Grotto-Heaven 2 Grants two Mysteries. The True Spirit Grotto-Heaven supplies Mountain-Bearing Bones and Drink the Long River 60 63.

Mysteries

Mysteries are fundamental Dao principles born from an Inner Landscape. They are neither spells nor Divine Abilities; they distinguish a living inner world from a lifeless image that collapses when its creator stops sustaining it 60.

Mystery Known User Applications and Limits
Mountain-Bearing Bones Lu Guan Strengthens the body with the power represented by the Five Sacred Mountains. Its enhancement applies on top of existing bodily cultivation and can also augment Divine Abilities 63 65.
Drink the Long River Lu Guan Continuously removes fatigue from muscles, tendons, and bones while its user still has breath, supporting recovery and prolonged fighting 63.
Pacify Mountains and Rivers Chen Jingchou; later simulated by Lu Guan Seals heaven-and-earth Qi within an area according to the user’s cultivation. Particularly effective against weaker opponents, but offers little advantage against peers of the same realm 65 66 73.
Aura-Tracing Seal Script An unnamed cultivator at the Prince of Yan’s Residence Locates targets through Qi signatures, blood, or hair, regardless of distance. It tracks Fourth Master Yin despite a treasure concealing his presence 67.
  • Noncombat value: Great Li specifically nurtures and protects the Aura-Tracing Seal Script user despite his Mystery providing no direct combat enhancement 67.
  • Exceptional replication: Lu Guan’s panel-created Dao Field can simulate Mysteries he has personally encountered, including demonic bloodline Mysteries. This is a special capability of his Dao Field, not a standard property of the realm 72 79.

Abilities & Skills

Command of Heaven-and-Earth Qi

Divine Thought allows an Inner Landscape cultivator to direct the surrounding Qi of heaven and earth 63.

  • Pressure and restraint: Yuan Guanshan weighs down Qianqiu County and later crushes Lu Guan beneath this force 38 44.
  • Divine Ability enhancement: Heaven-and-earth Qi is a central component of Inner Landscape combat. When Chen Jingchou seals Lu Guan’s access to it, his Qi-dependent combat strength is sharply reduced 65.
  • Instinctive resonance: Elder Jiang’s breathing naturally resonates with the surrounding Qi dynamics even while he appears to be dozing 58.

Divine Thought

Divine Thought provides inward perception and can extend beyond the body 62 64.

  • Internal observation: Lu Guan uses it to inspect his newly formed Grotto-Heaven 63.
  • Remote observation: Cultivators at the Prince of Yan’s Residence investigate Lu Guan’s breakthrough and watch his spar through projected Divine Thoughts 64 65.

Sustenance and Longevity

Entry into the realm changes the cultivator’s bodily needs and lifespan 63.

  • Qi sustenance: Lu Guan no longer needs food to maintain his vital functions after breaking through.
  • Cultivation through breathing: His inhalations draw vast currents of heaven-and-earth Qi into his body.
  • Extended life: Each Heaven adds twenty years of lifespan, up to two hundred additional years at perfection.

Demonic Cultivation

Demons can reach strength corresponding to the Inner Landscape Realm, but they do not construct human-style Inner Landscape Domains. Their route instead refines their demonic bodies and purifies their bloodlines 60.

  • Bloodline Mysteries: Powerful bloodlines can awaken one or two Mysteries upon entry into the realm, depending on bloodline grade 67.
  • Top-tier bloodlines: Exceptional demons can rival or kill Grotto-Heaven cultivators of the same realm 60.
  • Tiger bloodline example: Act as a Ghost Servant for a Tiger enslaves the souls of victims. Second Master Yin commands several Inner Landscape ghost servants, though they retain less than thirty percent of their former strength 67 76.

Borrowed Power Is Not a Breakthrough

Commanding heaven-and-earth Qi does not, by itself, prove that someone has reached the realm.

  • Lu Guan: Uses the Inner Landscape Divine Ability Celestial Person One Saber Slash while still at Gang Condensation. Its early use exhausts all his Gang Qi 46 47.
  • Five Li Town’s river demon: Borrows Qi dynamics through incense worship but is identified after death as a Perfected Gang Condensation Realm fish demon, not a genuine Inner Landscape demon 54 55.

Standing and Limitations

  • Cultivation threshold: The realm represents a qualitative leap beyond ordinary martial arts. Numbers alone offer little protection to martial artists who cannot command heaven-and-earth Qi 54 63.
  • Rare human achievement: Producing an Inner Landscape cultivator normally requires selection from tens of millions, valuable cultivation resources, and at least fifty or sixty years of nurturing 74.
  • Regional threat: Inner Landscape great demons can endanger entire regions and create major difficulties for the Demon Suppression Bureau and Demon-Slaying Envoys 82.
  • Below Divine Treasury: Yin Jing’s roar alone is powerful enough to kill an exposed Inner Landscape cultivator without drawing upon heaven-and-earth Qi 74.
  • Dharma Duel Arena: Inner Landscape humans and demons fight within the Heaven and Earth Chessboard while Divine Treasury leaders control the boards and stake territory on the outcome 71 74.
