Background / History

Artoria drew the Sword in the Stone after Merlin warned that becoming king would bring triumph, hatred, betrayal, and a lonely death. She accepted that future because she wished to establish a nation where her people could smile. After the sovereign sword was broken, she received Excalibur and its sheath, Avalon, from the lake goddess and vowed to forge that future with the holy sword. 474

As King of Britannia, Artoria founded Camelot around the dreams of her people, organized the Knights of the Round Table, and brought prosperity to her realm. Her idealistic rule nevertheless created distance between herself and her knights, while famine, natural disasters, and conflict between humans and fantasy races accelerated Camelot’s decline. 475 476

Morgan created Mordred as Artoria’s clone. Mordred’s need for recognition, Lancelot’s betrayal involving Guinevere, and the Round Table’s internal collapse culminated in the Battle of Camlann. Artoria killed Mordred, but Camelot was destroyed and nearly all of her knights were lost. 476 477

Unable to accept her kingdom’s destruction, Artoria became bound to the Holy Grail War through Alaya’s intervention. Her wish is to rewrite the past and save Camelot, though others warn that altering history could restore ancient divine beings and endanger humanity. 477 470

Appearance

Artoria is a petite blonde knight with green eyes and a regal presence. In combat, she usually manifests silver-blue armor and carries an invisible or radiant holy sword; when her armor disperses, she has been seen in a sharp black suit. 303 444 468

  • Golden hair, often tied into a ponytail; a distinctive ahoge is noted in some manifestations. 303 444
  • Clear green eyes and a youthful, doll-like stature. 303 443
  • Silver-blue knightly armor, which can be restored by mana replenishment. 78 303
  • Black heavy armor with crimson veins and a corrupted black sword as Black Saber. 126 127

Personality

Artoria is disciplined, protective, and deeply committed to knightly conduct. She deliberately draws powerful enemies away from populated areas, refuses to bully a child despite provocation, and places her Master’s safety above pursuing an opponent. 58 444 351

Her kingship is also the source of her greatest regret. She considers herself a failed king because Camelot fell, struggles with the idea of denying the lives and achievements of her subjects, and remains vulnerable to challenges concerning her wish to rewrite history. 468 469 470

In battle, Artoria is calm, proud, and highly competitive. She can regulate her emotions under pressure, read danger through instinct, and devise split-second tactics against stronger opponents. 351 484
