Background / History

Kaguya Shionomiya was adopted by Luo Shu after suffering from multiple personality disorder since childhood. More than thirty-seven personalities were identified within her, including a cold queen, a gentle elder-sister figure, a magician, an archer, and a legendary swordsman. Despite this unusual condition, she was originally considered a mortal without magical aptitude and was once targeted as a Clock Tower research subject. 144

Luo Shu cared for Kaguya after his adoptive mother’s death, allowing her to experience a comparatively normal childhood. Her trauma gradually receded, and she grew into a poised, caring, mischievous young woman who called him “Nii-chan.” 144

Her childhood was marked by her mother’s death and separation from Ashu, whom she regarded as an elder brother. She wanted to protect herself, save humanity, rescue a kidnapped playmate, and someday become a photographer. She later completed her magical circuit and summoned Saber for the Fifth Holy Grail War. 177 178

In an alternate reincarnation cycle, Luo Shu found Kaguya as a Skywing child and raised her among persecuted humans. He taught her compassion and human suffering, but her attachment to humanity hardened into hatred toward other races. After becoming the strongest Skywing warrior and a world ruler, she ultimately turned against humanity’s envoys in pursuit of her greater wish. 167 168

Appearance

Kaguya’s ordinary form is that of a petite, beautiful black-haired young woman. Her presence increasingly becomes cold and oppressive after recovering memories associated with her other selves. 143 205 206

  • Ordinary appearance — Black-silk hair, refined bearing, and an initially shy or mischievous demeanor. 144 205
  • Mature Beast form — Taller stature, flowing hair ribbons, and a crimson princess dress with a blood-like sheen. 149
  • Sixth Beast features — Demonic horns, a vertical third eye, crimson patterns across her body, black wings, and a throne surrounded by blood-red ribbons. 157 172
  • Planetary scale — Upon completing her Beast transformation, she can appear as a colossal figure towering above the Moon. 158

Personality

Kaguya combines vulnerability, idealism, and cruelty. As a child, she is timid and deeply affected by abandonment and death; she seeks Ashu for comfort after losing her mother. 144 178 Her stated ideal is to save humanity, an ambition that persists even when it becomes warped by despair and repeated reincarnation. 176 192

Her ordinary self can be caring, playful, and easily embarrassed by the actions of her parallel counterparts. She is notably protective of Hayasaka and later takes two displaced girls into the Shinomiya residence. 148 205 281 When synchronized with Luo Shu, her frightening aura fades enough for a more innocent, jealous, girlish side to emerge. 285

As the Beast of Advancement, Kaguya is aloof, confident, and contemptuous of resistance. She views humanity as driven by endless desire and believes forced evolution, control, and reincarnation are forms of salvation. 157 158 190 Nevertheless, her attachment to Luo Shu and the life they shared remains emotionally significant, even when she resolves to oppose him. 168 192
