Background
The Carefree Holy Land shared dominance over the Eastern Wasteland with the Ancient Desolate Holy Land and the Jade Lake Holy Land. Ten thousand years earlier, it had been subordinate in strength to the Ancient Desolate Holy Land, but the latter’s decline eventually brought the three onto equal footing 5.
Its rise depended heavily on the Xuanyuan Mystic Realm. By repeatedly securing the largest share of entry quotas, it obtained opportunities and resources that benefited disciples, elders, ancestors, and its Holy Lord—even those who had never entered personally 130.
According to Han Bingning, the Carefree Holy Land was the chief culprit behind the prolonged targeting of Ancient Desolate cultivators in the mystic realm. Repeated losses of experts and prodigies, combined with diminishing access to opportunities, contributed to its rival’s decline. Ye Xuan’s emergence threatened to reverse that balance 45 77.
Territory
- Southern Eastern Wasteland: Its domain covered hundreds of thousands of li, with Carefree Mountain serving as its institutional center 285.
- Regional balance: The Ancient Desolate Holy Land dominated the north, Jade Lake the west, and Carefree the south. No comparable major sect controlled the east 285.
- External influence: Its power extended through subordinate clans, coerced alliances, and sleeper agents planted inside the Ancient Desolate Holy Land 63 87 131 142.
Organization and Members
Leadership and Succession
- Holy Lord: Gu Ran headed the holy land and participated in strategic meetings with its ancestors and core elders 142.
- Ancestors: The institution originally possessed eight ancestors. Its First Ancestor remained its principal deterrent against an all-out Ancient Desolate offensive 123 124.
- Holy Son succession: A Holy Son was expected to inherit the Holy Lord’s position and possess the potential to reach sainthood. At the beginning of the story, the Carefree Holy Land had not produced one for nearly a thousand years 5.
- Holy Maiden: Cai Feng held this position during the conflict with Ye Xuan 211 240.

Techniques, Defenses, and Resources
Myriad Saints Pay Homage to Heaven
- The holy land’s sect-guarding forbidden martial technique, used by Gu Ran against Han Bingning and later against Ye Xuan 153 310.
- Manifests a saint’s phantom and releases pressure that overwhelms weaker cultivators 153.
- Derived from an incomplete divine ability or Lesser Divine Ability Technique; it is not itself a complete divine ability 190.
- Carries severe aftereffects and damages the user’s cultivation foundation 190.
Sect-Protecting Formation
- Protected the central grounds but required time to deploy fully because of the area it covered 286.
- Eight Ancient Desolate ancestors shattered it before activation finished. A fully deployed formation would have been substantially harder to breach 286.
Intelligence and Tracking
- Sleeper agents: Ge Tian commanded ten Golden Core Fifth Level agents embedded in the Ancient Desolate Holy Land. All ten died during their failed ambush of Ye Xuan 63.
- Identity jade tokens: At least Nie Yunhai’s token could sense nearby Carefree members within a limited range. Ye Xuan seized it after interrogating him 222 223.
Xuanyuan Mystic Realm Quotas
| Measure | Earlier competitions | Competition involving Ye Xuan |
|---|---|---|
| Entry tokens obtained | At least 300–400 per contest | 57 of the 2,000 available tokens 130 |
| Mortality | Never above 10% | Fewer than 500 survivors from 2,000 entrants 130 |
| Institutional benefit | Repeated access to resources useful even to ancestors and the Holy Lord | Heavy casualties and sharply reduced access to opportunities 130 |
Relationships
- Ancient Desolate Holy Land — Principal rival and eventual destroyer. Their conflict escalated from long-term suppression and attacks on disciples to clan massacres and open war 77 133 286 303.
- Ye Xuan — Targeted as a threat to the regional balance. He retaliated by killing its prodigies and experts, seizing resources, and urging an immediate offensive after He Wudi’s death 45 63 235 270.
- Jade Lake Holy Land — Fellow great holy land, but not a dependable partner in Carefree’s conflict. Shen Yao helped Ye Xuan locate Carefree prodigies and arranged assistance for Qiu Yue 5 100 108.
- Lin Clan — Subordinate ally in Xuanyuan City. Participated in massacres of Ancient Desolate-associated clans and later pursued Ye Xuan alongside Carefree cultivators; ultimately destroyed 204 270 285.
- Meng, Wu, Zhang, Xing, Huo, and Dai clans — Subordinate lineages annihilated for participating in attacks on Ancient Desolate forces 134 142.
- Nangong Lineage — Targeted for showing goodwill toward Ye Xuan and the Ancient Desolate Holy Land; exterminated as a warning to other factions 130 133.
- Chu Clan — Target of a retaliatory expedition led by the Fourth Ancestor. Ancient Desolate intervention prevented its destruction 146 148 156.
History
Investiture Challenges and Assassination Attempt
The Carefree delegation attended Ye Xuan’s investiture with cultivators ranging from Meridian Opening to Golden Core. Its challenges escalated from same-realm contests to lethal cross-realm battles, but Yuan Chong, Zhang Hao, and Xiao Tian all fell to Ye Xuan. Xiao Tian’s death was both a significant personnel loss and a public blow to the holy land’s reputation 35 38 42 43.
Carefree then sought to share the cost of eliminating Ye Xuan with other factions. The resulting hundred-man challenge failed, and a later covert attempt ended with Ye Xuan killing all ten sleeper agents sent by Ge Tian 45 48 63.
Xuanyuan City and the Quota Competition
Carefree elders and prodigies approached other factions about alliances against the Ancient Desolate Holy Land. Those efforts faltered after the Ninth Ancestor severely injured Ge Tian in Xuanyuan City, demonstrating that smaller allies could face retaliation they could not withstand 87.
During the quota struggle, Ye Xuan hunted Carefree cultivators with Shen Yao’s help, killing fifty-three over several days. He also killed Zhou Wushuang, Jian Qingshan, and Zang Xingtian; his confrontation with Zang included retaliation for four slain Ancient Desolate disciples 100 105.
The senior confrontation proved equally damaging. Han Bingning defeated the Sixth Ancestor and killed Ge Tian despite the arrival of five other ancestors. Ancient Desolate reinforcements forced Carefree’s ancestors to withdraw without an all-out battle 123 124.
Coercion and Clan Warfare
After the disastrous quota results, the Second Ancestor ordered a campaign to punish factions friendly to Ancient Desolate and compel others to submit. Zhuang Hai’s forces massacred the Nangong Lineage, while the campaign also exterminated two Ancient Desolate vassal lineages 130 131 133.
Ancient Desolate retaliated against six Carefree subordinate clans that had participated in the killings. Carefree answered by mobilizing its experts and threatening to destroy subordinate lineages that refused its summons 142.
The subsequent expedition against the Chu Clan failed. Gu Ran’s forbidden art could not overcome Han Bingning, and He Wudi intervened only to rescue him. Chu Zhantian killed Chen Yuan and the remaining Carefree forces, while the wounded Zhao Xiao’er escaped 148 153 156.
Xuanyuan Mystic Realm
Inside the mystic realm, Carefree assembled one of the five dominant forces, pursued Ye Xuan, and attacked local rogue cultivators. He Wudi sought to seize Ye Xuan’s Chaos Sacred Body 218 219 222.
Ye Xuan continued killing isolated Carefree experts, including thirty-three late Heavenly Position cultivators over two days. The survivors eventually stopped splitting up. By the confrontation beneath the divine palace, their losses left He Wudi unable to attack without exposing the rest of his faction to destruction 235 243.
After He Wudi died in the mystic realm, Ye Xuan urged an immediate attack before Carefree could learn of its loss. Cai Feng attempted to escape in disguise, but Ye Xuan subsequently killed her and six peak Heavenly Position experts. Zhao Xiao’er also fell during the fighting that followed 270 274.
Destruction and Surviving Remnants
The four ancestors remaining at headquarters received news of catastrophic losses and the Lin Clan’s destruction. The Second Ancestor began defensive preparations, but eight Ancient Desolate ancestors arrived before the sect-protecting formation fully deployed 285 286.
The attackers broke the formation and engaged the four defenders two against one. After more than ten days of fighting, all four remaining ancestors and the core elders at headquarters were dead. Disciples were spared complete extermination if they withdrew from the holy land, and Ancient Desolate did not extend the campaign to destroy all surviving vassal clans 286 303.
The fall ended an institution that had dominated the Eastern Wasteland for nearly ten thousand years. Gu Ran survived, reappearing as Silver Fox in Mage City and seeking revenge for his humiliation and his sect’s destruction. He continued pursuing Ye Xuan into the Devil Beast Mountain Range 303 310 312 326.
