Background / History
Early life and reputation
Kong Qiusu grew up under Mu Bingxing alongside Ge Ya and Xie Feng. He describes himself and his fellow disciples as orphans who became a family through their shared master. Mu Bingxing taught him and Ge Ya cultivation techniques and took them on journeys, though much of their learning was self-directed 354 371 768.
At the Xuanji Sect, Xie Feng remembered him as a gentle, refined scholar devoted to the books of sages. Beyond the sect, he became renowned as the Military Confucian: Han Yu credited him with fighting three thousand Literary Sages alone and turning all three thousand into his followers. He was later identified as the foremost Literary Dao practitioner in the Dao Realm’s history 326 427.
Phoenix Lord and Feng Yan’s betrayal
Under the identity Feng Xuan, Kong Qiusu served as Phoenix Lord for more than two hundred years. During his reign, he took his neglected niece Feng Wen into Feng Royal Palace and spent ten years teaching her literature, swordsmanship, courage, and moral principles 748 752.
Twelve years before his restoration, overly hasty cultivation caused turmoil in his Qi and blood and a rapid decline in strength. He intended to retire and pass the throne to his blood brother, Feng Yan. While he recuperated and prepared the succession decree, Feng Yan entered his secluded chamber with powerful supporters and attacked him 748 841.
Feng Yan justified the attack as punishment on the clan’s behalf and later claimed that Feng Xuan had refused to resist the Demon-Burying Clan. Kong Qiusu rejected that account: he had spent the preceding seven days secluded and knew nothing of those accusations. Unable to withstand the attack in his weakened condition, he abandoned his body and escaped the Fifth Universe as a remnant soul, losing almost all his memories 748.
Reunion with Xie Feng
Kong Qiusu eventually settled in a Dao Realm cave to recuperate. When Xie Feng found him, he initially failed to recognize his junior brother before remembering him as “Little Feng.” He could not recall where his body was or how he had lost it, so he accepted Xie Feng’s offer of shelter within his dantian 344.
He became Xie Feng’s traveling mentor, sparring with him in the Literary Dao and transmitting his self-created Emperor Su’s Eight Returns. A demonstration nearly drained Xie Feng completely; Kong Qiusu stopped, restored him, and explained the technique’s dangers 353 354.
He also reunited with Ge Ya for Xie Feng’s birthday. Despite relentless insults and competing boasts about their wealth, the three reaffirmed their lifelong bond. Xie Feng asked Ge Ya to search for Kong Qiusu’s missing body while looking for their master 370 371.
Soul recovery and protection of his junior brother
Xie Feng’s gift of Dao-less Star Essence began repairing Kong Qiusu’s soul. After awakening with a reformed soul body, he intervened against Ye Zhu, stabilized Xie Feng’s injuries, and overwhelmed the attacker with the Literary Crown Sword and Words Become Law 396 424.
Kong Qiusu severed Ye Zhu’s Luotu Buddha Saber and subjected him to repeated sword strikes. Ye Zhu survived and escaped because Kong Qiusu prioritized the unconscious Xie Feng over pursuit. He subsequently stopped Sushang from hunting Ye Zhu alone, warning that even the injured enemy remained beyond most Dao Realm cultivators 425 427 428.
His recovery remained a continuing concern. Little Nine promised to help him find a physical body, while Old Man Pine Gatherer identified the Purple Paths and Red Dust Road as a possible means of restoring his memories. Kong Qiusu later entered the Past Like a Dream Mirror for a three-year recovery, with Pine Gatherer staying behind to guard him 488 553 560.
Resurrection and return to the Fifth Universe
Xie Feng ultimately reunited Kong Qiusu’s soul with his original body, reviving him at peak Great Emperor cultivation. He initially failed to recognize Jin Yue, whose marriage contract with him had been arranged by their elders. She destroyed the contract rather than compel him to continue the relationship 746.
His recollection of the past subsequently became clear enough to recount Feng Yan’s betrayal. Although he initially tried to conceal his survival from Feng Wen with a silver mask, she recognized him, and he confirmed that he had endured twelve years as a remnant soul 748.
Kong Qiusu then supported Xie Feng’s growing power. He uncovered the Ziyun Army hidden within a treasure at Ziyun Bank and entrusted all one hundred thousand soldiers, together with their golden command seal, to Xie Feng. He explained that he no longer wanted the burden of maintaining a vast force and preferred to support his junior brother while living quietly 767 768.
Confrontation with Feng Yan
Kong Qiusu helped Feng Wen stage her death so that she could escape Feng Yan and begin again as Ren Yanyu. He also cautioned Xie Feng against prematurely confronting the Peak of Heaven’s strongest experts, preferring to build a net capable of catching them together 793 796.
When he finally confronted Feng Yan, Kong Qiusu called his misplaced trust the greatest regret of his life. He contrasted his murderous blood brother with Xie Feng, whom he named the person he trusted most. He stabbed Feng Yan with the Literary Crown Sword and fought Ancestor Wangshui, Ancestor Baofeng, and Ancestor Panshi, but Feng Yan escaped after Xie Feng and Ge Ya destroyed the Pillar of Creation sustaining him 841.
Captivity and the Land of Chaos
A mysterious Heavenly Emperor intercepted Kong Qiusu near the Jade Pivot Sect. Kong Qiusu recognized the man’s connection to the silver-lightning beings that had harmed Xie Feng and Mu Bingxing. He was subsequently held by Xie Han, who used his captivity to threaten Xie Feng 843 844 872 874.
Unable to rely on cultivation power, Kong Qiusu exhausted his heart-source power to send a message to his master. Xie Hun revived him by transferring fifty years of vitality through his Chaos Inscription, though the message continued drifting slowly through space with no assured arrival time 874.
By Chapter 915, Kong Qiusu was again free and spending time with Xie Ling. He later infiltrated the Demon-Suppressing Tower, destroyed the formation imprisoning her father, Xie Yunhao, and brought him to the Qingli Realm for treatment. His wounds could be treated, but his cultivation had been destroyed 915 925 926.
After Long Cangxue raised him to half-step Heavenly Emperor, news of Xie Ling’s planned execution prompted him to leave immediately for the Gate of the Vast Expanse. Xie Yun intercepted him before he could attack the gate and urged him to wait for stronger elders to intervene against Xie Han 933 940.
He later helped fight Xie Xu, shattering the elder’s saber and severing his right arm. By the confrontation with the Desolate Lord, Kong Qiusu had reached ordinary Heavenly Emperor and stood alongside Xie Feng and Ge Ya rather than leave his junior brother to face the danger alone 952 973.
Appearance
Kong Qiusu has a lean, pale scholarly face, ink-black hair, phoenix-shaped eyes, and a refined bearing that belies his combat strength 350 353 425 747.
- Usual clothing: White robes and a silver crown. Xie Feng supplies him with a white robe featuring pale-blue cuffs and belt, along with ink-cloud boots 349 350.
- Soul form: Appears illusory or transparent and often manifests from a wisp of white light. Clothing worn by this form also takes on a soul-like state 349 353 481.
- Disguises: Briefly wears a silver mask to conceal himself from Feng Wen; later uses a black cloak while infiltrating the Demon-Suppressing Tower 748 925.
Personality
Kong Qiusu treats learning as a lifelong pursuit. He immerses himself in cultivation manuals whenever possible, and his habits encourage Xie Feng to read daily. Even Little Sword is made to attend lessons. Before losing his body, however, his absorption in scholarship left little room for cultivating friendships or familial affection 448 454.
His polished manners conceal a sharp tongue and considerable pride. He insists that scholars value harmony while using Literary Dao commands to punish others, and he routinely provokes Ge Ya and Little Sword with calmly delivered insults. He dislikes arrogance in others while openly acknowledging his own genius 349 350 371 462.
His devotion to his fellow disciples is sincere. He shares an important signature technique without fearing that Xie Feng might surpass him, saying that such an achievement would make him proud. When Xie Feng is injured, his gentle demeanor can turn into cold, deliberate brutality 354 424 425.
Despite his wealth and former throne, Kong Qiusu does not seek greater political responsibility. He says that his forces were originally intended to secure the freedom to live as he wished, and he welcomes the chance to stand behind Xie Feng rather than manage an empire himself 768.
