Upbringing and Entry into the Xuanji Sect

Gu Yu lost both parents early and was raised by Gu Xinglan, whose maternal aunt was his mother. He grew up in comfort, protected by his powerful cousin, but resented being measured against her accomplishments. He wanted recognition for his own ambitions rather than constant criticism for failing to match her 609 624 643.

He initially challenged the Xuanji Sect’s disciples, defeating the thirteen-year-old Cang Tong despite holding a substantial cultivation advantage. His subsequent attacks could not penetrate Xie Feng’s protective Gang Qi. When introducing himself, he invented a story about being a neglected city lord’s son driven away by an overbearing aunt; he later admitted the deception 562 563 564 624.

After joining the sect, Gu Yu gradually became more diligent under Sushang’s supervision. His position as Xie Feng’s personal disciple brought especially demanding standards: after losing a swordsmanship assessment to A Ning, he was required to continue practicing the Xuanji Sword Art late into the night 643.

Choosing His Master over His Cousin

Xie Feng sent Gu Yu to help Chi Ling and Leng Hanyu, only for Gu Yu to discover that their opponent was Gu Xinglan. Unable to persuade her through flattery, he declared Leng Hanyu his girlfriend to protect her, then made the same claim about Chi Ling when Gu Xinglan switched targets. He ultimately stated that he stood firmly on their side 609 610.

Gu Xinglan subsequently ordered him to leave the Xuanji Sect. Gu Yu chose to stay and explained that he hoped his support for the Devil Race might restrain her increasingly obsessive conduct. Xie Feng offered to accept him as a disciple, and Gu Yu formally acknowledged him as master, receiving the Supreme-grade Azure Profound Fan 624 625.

Captivity in the Blood Forest

Claiming that the Xuanji Sect was too dangerous, Gu Xinglan took Gu Yu away and ordered him to guard Xuan Li’s remains. After his complaints and disrespect toward the remains angered her, she destroyed his cultivation. She then gave him the Ancient God Secret Art, which required its practitioner to begin with crippled cultivation 644 646.

Gu Xinglan demanded that he master the entire art within six months. She also told him that, if he succeeded, she would strip away his will and make him her loyal enforcer. Gu Yu was deeply shaken by the possibility that even family could become unrecognizable when interests were involved 646 647.

Determined to survive, he cultivated the art and reached the seventh stage of the Indestructible Realm within half a month. His captivity lasted three months before Xiangxiang and Yu Qingzhu broke through the Blood Forest’s barrier and rescued him. He brought the secret art with him and reported the golden coffin and Xuan Li’s remains to Xie Feng 659 664 665.

Sword Training and the Jade Pivot Sect

While accompanying Xie Feng to the Desolate Realm, Gu Yu drained six volcanoes of fire energy and rapidly advanced. Their guardian, a bird-headed dwarf, beat him unconscious for consuming the stored energy. Gu Yu subsequently played dead while Xie Feng and Xiangxiang pressured the guardian over his supposed death 689.

After another breakthrough in an energy rain, Gu Yu reunited with Xie Feng in a space where ten days passed for every day outside. Xie Feng gave him the Origin Level Emperor Beginning Sword and taught him the six forms of the Eternal Sword Dao. The ensuing training repeatedly exposed Gu Yu’s defensive instincts and ended with Xie Feng blasting his body apart, leaving his soul intact 697.

Gu Yu later delivered Earth Vein Stones to Jin Yue, the Imperial Evil Lord, and Sushang. Refining his own stone raised him to Advanced God Grade. On his return journey, Cang Jian intercepted him; a Peak of Heaven grand elder then joined the pursuit, and an attack destroyed his starship’s propulsion system 765 769 770 771.

Following the Jade Pivot Sect’s construction, Gu Yu organized recruitment visits to the Origin Realm, Dao Realm, and Upper Realm. He respected those unwilling to leave their homes and gave them time to decide. Long Cangxue later trained him through an illusion of death, enabling him to comprehend his own Sword Dao and reach Initial God King 775 776.

Divine Saint and the Blood Transformation

Gu Yu reached Initial Divine Saint by absorbing the Secret Pool beneath the Nine-Star Cold Pool. A later share of the Heart of the Creation God advanced him to Advanced Divine Saint 813 818 878.

During an encounter with a blood-red shadow, Gu Yu bit into its neck and refused to release it until he had drained it dry. The shadow’s blood transformed his appearance but violently clashed with his own blood, leaving him delirious and desperate to drink fresh blood. Little Nine severed one of his heads and let Gu Yu drink from it, suppressing the conflict and saving him 905 906.

The ordeal gave Gu Yu energy-draining and temporary undying abilities. He and Little Nine became considerably closer afterward. When Xuan Ya intercepted them again, Gu Yu—now a Peak Divine Saint—killed two Nether Soul Hall attackers, though Xuan Ya himself remained beyond him. Ren Yanyu and Qing Yi joined the battle, and Ren Yanyu ultimately killed Xuan Ya 906 911 912.

Bai Xiao’s Capture and Later Travels

By the time he spoke with a young escort about his ambitions, Gu Yu described Gu Xinglan as having died and himself as having lost his home. He credited following Xie Feng with helping him improve and develop aspirations of his own 934.

Bai Xiao, the Nether Soul Hall’s new hall master, later captured him and destroyed his voice transmission talisman. She brought him to a blood-covered graveyard and demanded that he kneel before Xuan Ya’s tomb and repent for his master’s actions. Gu Yu denied responsibility and tried to discourage her from opposing Xie Feng 935.

He subsequently accompanied Xie Feng and Little Nine toward the Tenth Universe. Later, he joined Xie Feng and Xie Ling in visiting Zhang Qiuli, waiting outside with the physician’s young apprentice, Yang Chen 940 958 959.

Personality

Gu Yu is boastful, irreverent, and shamelessly theatrical. He readily shifts from defiance to extravagant flattery when threatened, especially around Gu Xinglan. His privileged upbringing also leaves him lazy and accustomed to relying on protection, though Sushang’s strict teaching gradually improves his discipline 643 644 646 647.

His arrogance masks insecurity about living in his cousin’s shadow. He wants to prove that he has ambitions and worth of his own. Although he complains about difficult training, he continues practicing even while announcing that he wants to quit 624 643.

Fear of death is a major obstacle in his swordsmanship. Xie Feng criticizes his tendency to dodge or defend rather than commit to an attack, and Long Cangxue identifies his timid mindset as a weakness in his Sword Intent. Her simulated death experience helps him confront that fear and willingly challenge her again despite knowing he cannot win 697 776.

Gu Yu nevertheless shows loyalty and gratitude. He persists in protecting Chi Ling and Leng Hanyu despite his cousin’s anger, credits Xie Feng for resolving their crisis, and remains profoundly grateful to Little Nine for saving his life 609 610 906.
