Appearance

  • Youthful features: Exceedingly handsome, with a jade-like bearing and eyes described as deep as the starry sky 25.
  • Hair and clothing: Flowing black hair and robes whiter than snow 25 31.
  • Presence: Carries a fresh, natural Dao resonance and an immortal-like grace, usually accompanied by a calm smile 1 25 31.
  • Unchanging appearance: The Purple Empyrean Holy Lord notes that his appearance has barely changed over the decades, attributing this to his profound cultivation 33.
  • After awakening his physique: Complex tribulation runes flicker within his eyes and mark his limbs and bones 4.

Personality

Jiang Chen is reserved and deliberately inconspicuous. For decades, he largely remained on Clear Void Peak, attended recruitment ceremonies, and accepted ordinary peak-master treatment without reporting further breakthroughs. He declines a supreme elder’s position because his lineage still consists of two newly accepted disciples who need him 1 33 36.

As a teacher, he combines extraordinary generosity with an insistence on independence. He supplies scriptures, spiritual roots, and Dao Comprehension Tea, but expects his disciples to build their own foundations and seek opportunities outside the mountain. He supports Han Yuyao’s decision to confront her past without accompanying her, while promising protection if she encounters something beyond her ability 8 39 40 41.

His relaxed manner does not extend to tolerating threats against his disciples. He rescues Ye Hao when a training challenge becomes fatal, then decisively suppresses the Blood Refining Hall’s attackers. He also restrains his disciples’ arrogance, reprimanding Ye Hao for proposing to challenge weaker members of their own holy land rather than other factions’ Dao children 29 30 31 39.

His private thoughts retain a transmigrator’s humor: he compares children of fortune to protagonists and is amused when the united Ye Lineage fails to resemble the hostile families he expects from novels 8 25.

Background / History

Transmigration and Succession

Jiang Chen transmigrated approximately a century before the opening chapter and became Qing Xuanzi’s final true disciple on Clear Void Peak. Although he possessed the Supreme Luck System from the beginning, he advanced through cultivation without its assistance because he could not find a child of destiny. After Qing Xuanzi died in seated meditation roughly eighty years earlier, Jiang Chen succeeded him as peak master 1 33.

He attended every triennial recruitment ceremony and spent several years searching outside the holy land, but remained Clear Void Peak’s only resident until meeting Han Yuyao 1 3.

Taking Han Yuyao as His First Disciple

At the recruitment ceremony, Jiang Chen identifies Han Yuyao as a child of destiny whose stolen Supreme Sword Bone has left her congenitally deficient but tempered a Flawless Sword Heart. He accepts her despite the Dark Annihilation Dragon Emperor’s warning and teaches her the Chaos Sword Scripture 2 3.

Awakening his newly rewarded physique causes tribulation power to appear throughout the heavens and myriad worlds, alarming ancient beings. Jiang Chen later realizes that his awakening caused the disturbance being discussed by the holy land’s leadership 3 4.

As Han Yuyao advances, he conceals her secrets, tests her swordsmanship, and directs her toward the Sword Ruins of Creation to broaden her foundation. Her rapid progress convinces him that finding another child of fortune is more productive than cultivating alone 5 8 14.

Ye Hao and the Blood Refining Hall

His search leads to the Ye Residence in Green Yang City, where the Blood Refining Hall threatens the family over Ye Hao’s Ancient Desolate Sacred Body. Jiang Chen accepts Ye Hao, promises to overcome his curse, and uses the Chaos Azure Lotus to open his Wheel Sea 24 26 27.

When Ye Hao challenges Li Wushang and is overwhelmed, Jiang Chen rescues him and kills the elder. He subsequently captures Daoist Blood Nether and destroys the Hundred Refinements Devil God’s summoned projection, establishing his reputation across the Eastern Wilderness 29 30 31 32 36.

Return to Clear Void Peak

After resolving the Ye Lineage’s crisis, Jiang Chen brings Ye Hao back to the holy land. He declines promotion to supreme elder, introduces Ye Hao to Han Yuyao, and encourages both disciples to seek opportunities beyond the mountain 35 36 37 39.

He approves Han Yuyao’s journey to reclaim her fortune in the Cold Moon Holy Dynasty, then shares Dao Comprehension Tea with both disciples. Their transformations prompt the Purple Empyrean Holy Lord to visit personally, apologize for overlooking him, and increase his cultivation resources. During the visit, Ye Hao reaches True Spirit Realm, providing Jiang Chen with further feedback and the Life Spirit Spring 40 41 42 47 48 50.

Relationships

  • Qing Xuanzi — Deceased master and predecessor as Clear Void Peak’s peak master. Jiang Chen was his final true disciple 1 33.
  • Han Yuyao — First and eldest disciple. He recognizes the potential beneath her congenital deficiency, supplies her new cultivation path, and protects her freedom to confront her past 2 3 40.
  • Ye Hao — Second disciple. Jiang Chen breaks the first shackle on his Ancient Desolate Sacred Body, supplies his scripture and combat training, and protects his family from the Blood Refining Hall 26 27 29 35.
  • Mu Lingzhao, the Purple Empyrean Holy Lord — Fellow holy-land leader who initially mistakes him for an ordinary Emperor. Later acknowledges his exceptional strength and provides enhanced resources 33 48.

  • Ye Cangqiong and the Ye Lineage — Beneficiaries of his intervention; thank him for saving their family from destruction 26 35.
  • Ouyang Yuntian — Crimson Flame Sect Master who attempts to aid the Ye Lineage. Jiang Chen exposes his earlier observation, suppresses him, and then permits him to stand aside 31.
  • Hundred Refinements Devil God — Enemy whose attempt to consume Ye Hao ends with Jiang Chen destroying his projection and injuring him 32.
  • Mu Qingyan — Admires his achievements and asks to become his disciple, but the Holy Lord warns her not to disturb him 47.

Trivia

  • Despite his profound Sword Intent, Jiang Chen has never entered the Sword Ruins of Creation; his initial knowledge comes from the holy land’s Scripture Repository 8.
  • Dao Comprehension Tea barely improves his understanding because his physique is already so extraordinary, though he enjoys its flavor 42.
  • His refusal of a supreme elder’s seat makes him unusual among Venerable Lords, who ordinarily withdraw from peak-master duties to cultivate in secret realms and grotto-heavens 36.
