The handover
Grandpa opened the bundle, took out several boxes, and opened them one by one. Ye Huan had seen them all. Grandpa had shown them to him before, and only to him.
"Try not to let anyone see this one. A complete wild rhinoceros horn. You know its effects. Keep it safe." Grandpa closed the box again and handed it to Ye Huan.
Ye Huan looked at Grandpa in confusion. "It's time I handed these treasures over to you. Cherish them." Seeing his expression, Grandpa smiled as he spoke.
"Huh? Grandpa, isn't it still too early?" Ye Huan said.
"It's fine. They were going to be yours sooner or later. Now that you've come home and aren't leaving again, let's do it today." Smiling, Grandpa opened another box.
"This is bear gall. You recognize all these things. Keep it safe yourself." He closed the box and handed it to Ye Huan.
"This ginseng is quite a bit inferior to yours, but it's still over four hundred years old. Plenty of people asked me for it, and I turned them all down. I was saving it to help you set up a home, but there's no need now. Hehe, my eldest grandson can make his own money. Just keep it."
"This is a piece of ancient jade. Back in 1940, a flash flood washed open an ancient tomb in the mountains, and your great-grandpa went and picked it up. I checked some sources. It was probably the tomb of some Han dynasty prince. Keep it to play with."
"This piece of jadeite was what I got in exchange for those slices cut from the ginseng I just showed you. They called it glass-type imperial green or something. I don't understand that stuff either, but they urgently needed good ginseng to save a life and came begging to me, so I cut eight slices from that wild ginseng for them. Take it!"
Ye Huan looked at the roughly fist-sized piece of glass-type jadeite. He really hadn't known about this. Grandpa even had something like this? How much was it worth? Holy moly, so I've been a third-generation rich kid all along?? Good heavens.
A towering skyscraper rises from level ground, and the big shot turns out to be me??
However little Ye Huan knew, he still knew what glass-type jadeite meant. It showed up far too often in webnovels, the kind of stuff where people casually dared to ask a "small goal" of a hundred million for one little piece.
"You know about the tiger hide and tiger penis. Just keep them safe. As for that jar of tiger bone wine, I added lots of precious medicinal ingredients to it. I've been drinking it all along. The jar is in my secret room. Just remember that."
"Mm, Grandpa, take your time drinking it. That stuff really is good." Ye Huan nodded. He knew about that half-skeleton of tiger bones; Grandpa had used it to steep wine. He had sold the other half back when Aunt and her family wanted to move to the city and settle down.
So Grandpa really didn't owe his daughter anything. Half a tiger skeleton weighed well over ten jin, and it could easily sell for tens of thousands per jin.
"These two bottles are for treating internal and external injuries. You go into the mountains often, so keep them safe. Good medicinal ingredients are scarce these days, which makes these even more precious." Grandpa pointed at the two bottles as he spoke to his grandson.
"Mm-hmm, I know." Ye Huan nodded.
"There are also some leopard hides, deer velvet antlers, deer penises, dog bezoars, ox bezoars, and such in that secret room. Nothing worth much. You can decide later. If someone wants them, you can sell them." Grandpa had come to take things more easily now. His eldest grandson was very capable.
Besides, with that eight-hundred-year-old wild ginseng alone, his grandson had nothing to worry about, so he didn't mind letting him sell some things.
"If we're not short of money, let's keep them. Getting hold of these things again in the future would probably be very difficult," Ye Huan said with a smile. He wasn't short of money now either, so why sell them?
He was even planning to plant that seven-hundred-and-eighty-year-old wild ginseng in the Spirit Spring Space shortly. Perhaps it would become a genuine thousand-year-old wild ginseng someday.
There was also such a large section of the four-hundred-plus-year-old one. That was plenty. He wasn't an idiot. With so many good things, selling them was easy, but collecting them again would be hard. People these days were all as shrewd as monkeys.
"All right, you decide." Grandpa smiled happily. Though he talked about selling them, he was actually reluctant to part with them too.
"Don't worry, Grandpa. Our family won't be short of money anymore. Let's keep the good stuff as family heirlooms. If we really need money, selling that jadeite will be enough," Ye Huan said with a smile.
"Oh? That lousy rock is worth a lot?" Grandpa asked.
"Yes, though I don't know exactly how much. But ten million definitely won't be a problem." Ye Huan smiled too. A lousy rock? Haha.
"Holy moly, what lousy rock is worth ten million?" Grandpa was stunned too. If he'd known it was worth so much, he would have sold it long ago. Would he have let his eldest grandson suffer for all those years?
For the first time, the old man was brought to tears by his own stupidity.
"Yes, jadeite. Rich people like this stuff. Keeping it doesn't do much for us. I'd rather have gold," Ye Huan said with a smile.
"All right, then find a chance to sell it and buy gold. Give me some when you do. I'll give your aunt a bit, so she won't nag me all day about only doting on my son's son and ignoring my daughter's son," the old man said.
Ye Huan nodded. Though he wouldn't go so far as splitting it equally, he didn't mind setting aside a portion for Grandpa to give Aunt's family. Grandpa doting on him was Grandpa's business. As a member of the younger generation, there was no need for him to fall out with Aunt's family over it.
Besides, Grandpa hadn't treated their family badly. He had even paid for their home. By comparison, leaving aside this collection of treasures, before Ye Huan came back, his parents had never taken hundreds of thousands or a million from Grandpa.
They had still supported the old man without complaint. Of course, they knew he had plenty of treasures, and that he was saving them all for their son.
After buying a home, Ye Huan's aunt and her family hadn't nagged anymore either. Contentment was a virtue. If they weren't content, the old man would beat them until they were. Ye Huan had that much confidence. Haha.
Just thinking about it made him want to laugh. Why had that uncle of his moved the whole family into the city? Because the old man's beatings had scared him.
"All right, I'll ask about the market prices later, so nobody swindles us," Ye Huan said with a smile. As for gold, he could buy it bit by bit. That stuff was good no matter the times, much safer than rocks.
Apart from Ye Yingying, who had called earlier, and her close friend, the only rich person he knew was his university classmate Chen Xixi. Everyone had known her family was rich back when they were students, but Ye Huan didn't know how rich. After all, Chen Xixi was from Su Province.
"I'll ask Miss Ye and her friend when I have time. They should be richer by comparison." Ye Huan put the things away. Grandpa had handed over all the family's assets to him. This was a passing of the legacy.
After explaining the items in the boxes, Grandpa tied up the bundle and handed it to his eldest grandson, completing the handover. With these treasures in his grandson's keeping, he could rest easy.
Ye Huan carried the bundle upstairs as before, then put everything in the thatched cottage inside the space. He would sort it out when he had time. Later, when he was free, he would have someone make one of those curio display cabinets specifically for these treasures.
Now Ye Huan understood too. Good things were best kept in his own hands, unless he truly ran out of money. Then there was no helping it. People had to keep living.
Though he hadn't achieved financial freedom yet, he reckoned that once he sold that "lousy rock," he wouldn't be short of money anymore. Then he could truly enjoy life.
