Background / History

Early Competition and Injury

Bai Zhiyi participates in Draft as a trainee from Shaoyang Entertainment. During an early broadcast, he and Xu Jiaqiao comfort Yu Zeqi after Shang Shujue’s audible thoughts expose threats against him and reveal his parentage 4 7.

His striking resemblance to Zhang Zhichen initially leads both men to suspect they might be half-brothers. Before Bai Zhiyi can perform “Become the Wind,” however, Shang Shujue’s thoughts reveal that they are unrelated—and that Su Youchuan’s intended substitute and the man he secretly loves will eventually become a couple. Startled, Bai Zhiyi slips into a painful split, forcing the production team to suspend the livestream for medical treatment 5 7.

He remains hospitalized afterward, embarrassed by the public accident. Zhang Zhichen decides to visit him, discuss the revelations, and arrange a DNA test; by the time the trainees respond to an online smear against Shang Shujue, Bai Zhiyi’s injuries have healed 9 11 27.

Learning His Predicted Fate

Bai Zhiyi gradually begins seeking information rather than merely fearing Shang Shujue’s revelations. He persuades Zhang Zhichen to enter the dance studio with him so they can listen closely in case Shang Shujue mentions their future again 32.

During his next solo performance, Shang Shujue exposes the tragedy awaiting them in the original storyline. Su Youchuan would keep Bai Zhiyi as Zhang Zhichen’s substitute for three to five years, then grievously injure him and sever the tendons in his wrists and ankles. Bai Zhiyi would eventually beg the imprisoned Zhang Zhichen, by then his lover, to end his suffering. His death would contribute to Zhang Zhichen’s subsequent suicide. These are revelations of a predicted storyline, not events that occur in Bai Zhiyi’s eventual ending 46 166.

Although the revelation briefly disrupts his movements, Bai Zhiyi regains his concentration and completes his original song-and-dance routine. His performance wins over the audience and secures his advancement 46 47.

Su Youchuan’s Visit

Su Youchuan later visits the training camp with Lin Yuyan, who claims to be Bai Zhiyi’s fan and wants to debut with him. Yu Yang insists that Bai Zhiyi must hear the proposed grouping arrangement and decide for himself 81 82.

When a staff member summons him, Zhang Zhichen immediately offers to accompany him. Bai Zhiyi instead asks Zhang Zhichen to follow ten minutes later, unwilling to jeopardize an ordinary employee’s job. Despite his unease, he goes to the office, where Shang Shujue soon arrives and sits beside him. The meeting ends with Su Youchuan leaving the camp 81 84 86.

Growing Close to Zhang Zhichen

After the meeting, Bai Zhiyi finds Zhang Zhichen watching the rain with an unusually melancholy expression. He approaches playfully and draws him into conversation; their exchange ends with mutual embarrassment over their physical closeness, followed by Bai Zhiyi pulling him outside to photograph a rainbow 86 87.

Zhang Zhichen later invites him to dance at a commercial performance. When Bai Zhiyi teasingly asks whether he is special, Zhang Zhichen answers sincerely that he is and that he wants to dance alone with him. Bai Zhiyi blushes, accepts, and hurriedly leaves. The other trainees recognize their growing attraction, though the two are not yet officially dating 92 93 94.

Their intimacy continues through small exchanges. Bai Zhiyi asks about Zhang Zhichen’s private concerns, learns about his childhood friendship with Li Qingxu, and blushes alongside him when they accidentally brush against each other. When Zhang Zhichen’s parents are threatened by a predicted car crash, Bai Zhiyi helps hurry him outside to find Shang Shujue 107 108.

Marriage

Ten years after their idol group disbands, Bai Zhiyi and Zhang Zhichen officially begin their relationship. They register their marriage the following day and move in together. Although they experience arguments and friction, neither considers separating, and they build a lasting life together 166.

Appearance

• Resemblance to Zhang Zhichen: Their faces are so similar that both initially question whether they share a father. Shang Shujue’s information identifies no blood relationship 5 7.
• Expressive eyes: His eyes are described as clear, lustrous gemstones when he looks up at Zhang Zhichen 107.

Personality

Bai Zhiyi combines an uninhibited performance style with considerable romantic bashfulness. Onstage, he projects power, stubbornness, and freedom; around Zhang Zhichen, his ears redden easily, and direct affection can leave him too embarrassed to maintain eye contact. He nevertheless initiates teasing and increasingly seeks to understand Zhang Zhichen’s private life 46 87 92 93 107.

He is also an enthusiastic gossip listener. After initially dreading Shang Shujue’s thoughts, he deliberately positions himself to hear more about his own future. Even outside Shang Shujue’s hospital room, concern gives way to curiosity once he knows the immediate danger has passed 32 131.

His consideration for others shows in practical choices: he refuses to make a staff member’s difficult position worse during Su Youchuan’s visit, and he uses humor to ease the trainees’ anxiety after learning Shang Shujue has survived a knife attack 81 92.
