Background and History

Previous Life and Parallel Self

Before entering the novel world, Shang Shujue was an actor who learned practical skills for his roles, including martial arts and horseback riding. Song Yanqing was his longtime professional rival and came from the same world. A later vision shows Shang Shujue’s previous life ending in a fatal car collision 7 91 118 122.

The novel-world Shang Shujue had pursued Su Youchuan for three years without receiving affection in return. Exhausted by that relationship, he contracted with Nuomi and became a raider for the Quick Transmigration Bureau. Nuomi later clarifies that the two Shang Shujues are the same person developed under different circumstances, rather than wholly unrelated individuals; the departing counterpart has already become a successful silver-medal raider 104 111.

Talent Show and Changing Others’ Fates

Shang Shujue enters the talent-show recording wearing contestant badge 18 and accepts a seat beside Zhang Zhichen. His private observations about the novel’s characters are unexpectedly audible to others, beginning with comments about Zhang Zhichen’s role and Yu Zeqi’s vulnerability to deception 3.

His foreknowledge becomes a means of intervention. He confronts Xu Jiaqiao’s manager, helps expose the dangers facing Yu Zeqi, and arranges for evidence of Yang Xuehuan’s scams to reach Zhou Zheng. These actions alter the characters’ expected futures, but changing their destinies makes Shang Shujue responsible for their karma 8 9 17 26.

He also uses his business position to create alternatives for struggling trainees. He decides to recruit Zhang Yunchen to Jinyuan Media after learning of his kindness toward Xu Jiaqiao. Later, he offers eight eliminated contestants opportunities at his brother’s company, Shangyu. Hu Zhiyuan, Li Ru, Zheng Jiaye, and Zhou Wangqi accept; the other four choose paths outside the industry 25 54.

The contrast between his abrasive public reputation and his conduct in person gradually changes how the trainees regard him. His help inspires gratitude, while his inner conversations with Nuomi make him the center of the camp’s gossip gatherings 23 26 48 71.

Karma and the World Consciousness

Nuomi explains that Song Yanqing’s abundant fortune can balance the karma Shang Shujue acquires through intervention. Shang Shujue initially rejects the proposed solution of intimacy with his rival, preferring to earn enough merit to neutralize the consequences himself 9.

Accumulated karma eventually leaves him in devastating pain. Nuomi exchanges its points for a healing elixir, and Song Yanqing administers it mouth-to-mouth. Shang Shujue’s injuries begin healing, while continued kissing eases the pain; it returns when the contact stops 67.

His opposition to Su Youchuan becomes a threat to the World Consciousness’s control. When Su Youchuan approaches complete “blackening,” Nuomi warns that the Child of Fortune’s collapse could plunge the world into disasters. Shang Shujue immediately abandons his verbal attack and uses a wounded performance to calm him 103.

The crisis culminates when the World Consciousness links Su Youchuan’s emotions to the weather. Shang Shujue spends all his available points and merit to reverse and freeze time, reaches the ritual site, and destroys the fragment with the Divine Movement Whip. Its pink World Crystal merges into him 121.

During his ensuing unconsciousness, he witnesses divine scenes and his previous life. He then awakens chained in Su Youchuan’s home and purchases Hallucinatory Incense and a Substitute Doll after discovering that his point balances have maxed out. Nuomi subsequently confirms that absorbing the crystal has made him the world’s master and completed its main mission 122 123.

The world thereafter ceases to force its inhabitants into predetermined roles. Most people lose their memories of hearing Shang Shujue’s thoughts, though important characters and people close to him retain them. Later scenes show that some companions can still hear his inner voice 123 140.

Relationship with Song Yanqing

Shang Shujue initially insists that he and Song Yanqing are sworn enemies, even as their behavior increasingly resembles a relationship. He misunderstands Song Yanqing’s jealousy and is slow to accept his own attachment 39 40 94.

After Song Yanqing confesses his longstanding feelings, Shang Shujue admits privately that he needs time to adjust. Their bond becomes openly affectionate, and Shang Shujue later forces his way into the Song family’s ancestral hall with the Divine Movement Whip to rescue the bloodied Song Yanqing 74 128 134.

They date publicly, appear together around entertainment work, and exchange rings at a seaside engagement ceremony before friends and family 142 155 165.

Shang Shujue is repeatedly described as exceptionally beautiful, combining a man’s heroic bearing with finely drawn, androgynous features 48 103.

Personality

Shang Shujue is outspoken, competitive, and sharply sarcastic. He answers threats with insults and meets his eldest brother’s teasing with increasingly frustrated retorts. His confidence extends to his looks, acting ability, and riding skills 3 103 113 118.

His fascination with gossip often absorbs his attention completely. He eagerly questions Nuomi about other people’s stories, sometimes failing to notice Song Yanqing holding his hand. Not every imagined development is genuine foreknowledge: listeners eventually recognize that some of his predictions are speculation based on familiar novel tropes 21 22 25 134.

Beneath his confrontational manner, he is protective and practical. He helps trainees without treating poverty as a personal failing, respects those who choose to leave entertainment, and gives Shang Linyu sustained attention through illness and discomfort 48 54 173.

He is far less direct about his own vulnerability. He denies missing Song Yanqing while asking when he will return, hides his embarrassment behind complaints, and initially resists acknowledging romantic attachment. Once secure in the relationship, he becomes openly affectionate and trusting 94 113 126 184.
