Background / History

Arrival and Life with Robin

Dill is a transmigrator who arrived in the One Piece world two and a half years before the opening chapter. His body’s original owner had jumped into the sea to escape the attentions of a gang leader named Aimee. Dill awakened adrift and was rescued by Nico Robin shortly after her escape from Ohara 1.

Their association quickly earned him a bounty. Believing the World Government would dispose of him as someone connected to Ohara even if he abandoned Robin, he stayed with her. They spent the following years moving between islands and evading pursuers, particularly World Government agents. Dill used hypnosis to earn money and kept his promise that Robin would not go hungry 1 2.

Taking Over Black Fire

After learning that the Bullet family intended to capture Robin and offer her to the Marines, Dill fully hypnotized Brandon as an inside agent. He then recruited and controlled progressively higher-ranking Black Fire members, aiming to use the organization to reach Bullet and eventually the Five Families 1 2 3.

Dill overcame Boren and subdued Gunpowder, spending six hours hypnotizing the latter. With Black Fire under his control, he canceled the hunt for Robin and ordered the gang to stop casually bullying civilians. Recognizing Gunpowder’s poor administrative ability, he sought more capable managers 4 5 6.

When Bege infiltrated Black Fire to assassinate Gunpowder, Dill turned the encounter into an alliance. He presented the Celestial Dragons as the ultimate targets for Bege’s obsession with killing bosses, while privately admitting that he did not intend to lead a revolt. Dill and Robin then left Cologne Island amid a coordinated departure of at least ten ships 7 10.

Hina and Dill Island

Dill rescued Hina and Robin from a rampaging sea cow, and Hina joined their group. Their search for food brought them to an island where every resident was named Dill. After Hunter Dill threatened him for using the king’s exclusive, unqualified name, he adopted the alias Dean 12 13.

King Dill captured the travelers using the Control-Control Fruit. Although the king could immobilize Dill’s body, he could not control his soul completely. Dill attributed this resistance to his otherworldly soul, which was not originally named Dill 16 17.

During the escape, Dill obtained the Flame-Swallowing Lord’s Mythical Zoan powers and fought through the castle’s soldiers. He carried Robin and Hina across the rooftops, commandeered a cargo ship through hypnosis, and fled the island. Afterward, he informed Bege that the king was dead and directed him to recover the accumulated treasure 19 20 21 22.

The Morisou Tribe and Reputation Campaign

Dill supported Robin’s search for an unnamed island connected to Ohara’s history. There, he negotiated with acting clan leader Sally for access to a Poneglyph, agreeing to take the clan’s children away while demanding hostages as insurance 23 27.

He killed two giant yaks threatening the Morisou Tribe, recruited warriors, and helped treat the tribe’s transformed members using apples and Morisou’s Favor. Meanwhile, his Cologne Island subordinates developed schools, newspapers, rumors, and proposed comics to spread belief in his abilities 30 32 33.

Trancy and the North Blue

Bege’s kidnapping of Prince Wolf Vlad drew Dill into the Trancy Kingdom’s succession conflict. Dill helped Vlad control his transformed arm, planned to infiltrate the kingdom’s armies, and recruited Perona. In the royal treasury, he learned about the Wolf Family’s Devil Bloodline and its bone sword 35 37 40 41 43 46.

After Vlad’s coronation, Dill acquired a succession of new powers. He placed controlled officials in charge of government while Vlad trained, intending for Vlad eventually to develop through the Marines’ training system and combat opportunities 47 48.

Bege escorted Dill, Robin, Hina, and Perona across the Red Line. Over the next half-year, Dill traveled through the North Blue, secretly controlling mayors and kings to search for Law’s submarine and spread rumors about his powers. He intended to conceal his presence there until the submarine was found; the search eventually brought him into contact with the Red Hair Pirates 49 50.

Appearance

  • Natural appearance: A white-haired boy with delicate, handsome features and a slender, pale body. His initial physical condition and talent are notably poor 1 5.
  • Flame-Swallowing Lord form: Reaches two meters tall but remains human-looking, without wings, scales, or horns. His white hair is later described as waist-length 19 29.
  • Disguises: Dyes his hair black and relies on Robin’s sprouted flesh to alter his face. One disguise makes him resemble a short, puffy-faced middle-aged man 1 11.
  • Height concealment: Earlier wears shoes with hidden ten-centimeter lifts 2.

Personality

Dill openly wants to become the World’s Strongest “while lying down.” He dislikes fighting, prefers a low profile, and initially abandons conventional stamina training because of his poor talent. Rather than relying on effort alone, he builds networks of believers and encourages promising subordinates to become stronger, increasing the belief they can supply 5 25 47.

He is manipulative but cautious: he prepares escape supplies before confronting Bege, takes hostages during negotiations, and uses covert influence rather than public rule. His concern for his companions is more personal. He keeps Robin fed throughout their years as fugitives, rescues Hina, and protects the tribe’s children, but refuses to risk returning to Dill Island to save everyone 2 7 12 21 27 29.

He retains little emotional attachment to his body’s former life, comparing its memories to a long animated story. Nevertheless, when the opportunity arises, he asks Bege to investigate Aimee and kill him if he is still alive 49.

Abilities & Skills

Power of Belief

Dill’s innate “golden finger” grants abilities when others believe he possesses them 1.

  • Famous or powerful believers contribute more than ordinary people; different abilities require different amounts of belief 1.
  • Additional belief raises an ability’s potential ceiling, not its immediate proficiency. Active powers still require stamina and training 5 25.
  • Hypnosis lets him manufacture believers, while newspapers, rumors, and stories allow him to reach a wider audience 2 33.
  • Granted passive abilities can be dispelled; active abilities cannot. Disabling a belief-granted weakness does not remove an equivalent bodily trait 48.
  • Time manipulation, spatial manipulation, infinite stamina, and automatic proficiency growth remain proposed abilities rather than confirmed powers in the documented chapters 32.

Hypnosis

His first acquired power becomes both his livelihood and the foundation of his covert organization 1 2.

  • Requires eye contact; King Dill’s blindness prevents its use against him 13 17 18.
  • Can influence perception, induce behavior, extract information, and establish obedience strong enough that subjects accept his claims unquestioningly 1 2 3.
  • Complete subjugation can be time-consuming: Gunpowder requires six hours, while later recruits undergo hours of hypnosis 5 32.
  • Controlled people retain personal habits and preferences rather than becoming identical personalities 7.
  • Cannot override the Control-Control Fruit’s rule-based domination of Dill Island’s inhabitants 18.

Flame-Swallowing Lord

His Mythical Zoan form supplies the physical foundation that his original body lacked 19.

  • Provides formidable strength, stamina, recovery, and fire control 19.
  • Allows him to bite through and swallow metal weapons, including spearheads and a flintlock 19 20.
  • Makes him immune to his own flames; his clothes also remain unharmed during use 30.
  • Grants a passive charm affecting married women, rather than women generally 21.
  • Does not eliminate water weakness. He still needs a separate positive ability to counteract that trait 48.

Elemental Control

  • Fire: Predates his Devil Fruit and is later reinforced by the Flame-Swallowing Lord. Early flames are weakened by rain 1 4 19.
  • Electricity: Used through his hands and fists, to numb opponents, and to coat a spear. Before obtaining the fruit, he cannot project it as a ranged attack 4 18 19.
  • Water: Initially demonstrated as a tiny bead created and rotated at his fingertip 5.

Combat and Tactical Planning

  • Targets vulnerable body parts and combines hypnosis, electricity, fire, and firearms rather than relying on formal technique 4.
  • Teaches Robin to attack vulnerable points when her strength is insufficient for joint locks 16.
  • Defeats giant yaks by biting through their hides and extracting their spines when ordinary blades and direct attacks prove inadequate 30 32.
  • Uses infiltration and Perona’s Negative Hollows to weaken enemies before applying hypnosis or launching larger operations 43 48.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Den Den Mushi — Coordinates subordinates, maintains contact with Bege, and relays orders to hostage guards 22 27.
  • Flintlock pistol — Used against Boren after electricity restricts his movement 4.
  • Morisou’s Favor — Received from Robin and used with apples to reverse the tribe’s transformations; distinct from the sex-changing power he later acquires independently 32 33 48.
  • Masks — Supplement Robin’s facial disguises during travel 14 37.
  • Improvised weapons — Uses a lightning-coated spear during his castle escape and a borrowed machete against a giant yak 19 29 30.

Relationships

  • Nico Robin — Rescuer, longtime companion, and first believer. She handles disguises, navigation, research, and much of his organization’s administration; he promises to protect her from hunger and supports her search for Poneglyphs 1 2 3 7.
  • Hina — Traveling companion rescued during the sea cow attack. Dill welcomes her into the group, supports her training, and treats her injuries 12 47.
  • Perona — Recruited through gifts of food and teddy bears. She calls him “Big Brother Dill,” and her Negative Hollows become valuable tools in his operations 40 41 43 48.
  • Capone Bege — Ally recruited by appealing to his desire to assassinate powerful bosses. Recovers King Dill’s treasure, helps Dill cross the Red Line, and supplies the group before returning to the West Blue 10 22 49 50.
  • Gunpowder and Boren — Former opponents turned controlled subordinates. Dill directs Gunpowder toward combat development rather than administration 4 5 6.
  • Geno — Subordinate responsible for schools, newspapers, and rumor campaigns. His misunderstanding accidentally gives Dill a genuine sex-changing ability 33 48.
  • Wolf Vlad — Prince whom Dill helps toward kingship. Dill recognizes his combat potential and encourages eventual Marine training rather than remaining confined to royal duties 37 43 46 47 48.
  • Sally — Acting clan leader with whom Dill negotiates access to the Poneglyph and arrangements for the tribe’s children. He later helps remove the tribe’s immediate threats 27 30 33.
  • King Dill — Captor whose name-based control cannot fully dominate Dill’s otherworldly soul. His blindness and fruit-controlled population also neutralize Dill’s usual hypnosis tactics 16 17 18.
