Background / History

The Skrull Arrangement

Following the events surrounding Project Pegasus and the Skrull–Kree conflict, Fury helped shelter Skrull refugees on Earth out of consideration for Carol and with the intention of using their abilities. He worked with them for nearly twenty years, during which they supported S.H.I.E.L.D. operations and became valuable intelligence contacts 210 212 234.

Fury promised to help find them another planet but failed to fulfill that commitment. When challenged, he argued that Earth lacked the technology to locate a suitable world and relocate an entire population 216.

Encountering Rimuru

Fury oversaw the investigation of a seemingly ordinary blue slime recovered from a crater. After laboratory staff failed to damage it, the creature awakened and disappeared through a yellow portal. Fury sealed the laboratory and ordered the surveillance footage secured 2.

Subsequent reports made him increasingly cautious about Rimuru. Coulson’s team was incapacitated without serious injury, while Rimuru demonstrated an ultrasonic attack capable of reaching a pilot through thick armor. Fury postponed direct contact because Rimuru appeared nonhostile but deliberately avoided S.H.I.E.L.D. 10 13.

When Rimuru vanished into Virtual Planet Kuscia, Tony accused Fury of abducting him. Fury had done no such thing and was furious that his surveillance agents had failed to notice the disappearance. He investigated the manor and withdrew his agents after Rimuru returned 16.

Surveillance and Negotiated Cooperation

Fury shifted toward observation rather than interference as Rimuru’s technology grew harder to assess. He continued monitoring unusual laboratory readings, ordered a file opened for the Dragon Knight, and declined to intervene merely because Rimuru possessed suspicious technology 31 32.

After Rimuru uncovered a human-trafficking operation linked to Wilson Fisk, Fury authorized a team to secure the warehouse and rescue the victims. He subsequently entertained cooperation over Hell’s Kitchen and sought access to Rimuru’s robots, eventually obtaining basic T-600 units for evaluation 33 35 38 42.

During Hulk and Abomination’s battle, Fury secured Rimuru’s intervention by offering a special response permit, Gamma Project research data, and an archive search. Abomination later escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. custody in a stronger form, forcing Fury to seek another rapid resolution before Congress resorted to a missile strike 48 50 52.

Hydra’s Exposure and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Reconstruction

Rimuru’s revelation that Hydra had infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. shattered Fury’s confidence in his organization. The disclosure that Hydra had also arranged Howard and Maria Stark’s murders reinforced suspicions he had long held about their supposedly accidental deaths 54 55.

No longer trusting S.H.I.E.L.D.’s personnel, Fury borrowed Rimuru’s robots to help search for Steve Rogers in the Arctic. After Steve’s recovery, Fury enlisted both him and Rimuru in a plan to expose Hydra’s forces 57 58 59.

Fury deliberately allowed Alexander Pierce room to act so Hydra could be eliminated in one sweep. Loyal agents and disguised T-1000s crushed the uprising, and Fury confronted Pierce in the underground carrier base. Tony interrupted Pierce’s suicide attempt and attacked him for arranging his parents’ deaths 61.

The purge left S.H.I.E.L.D. nearly paralyzed, with almost half its members gone and much of its field strength lost. Fury requested robotic reinforcements; by the New Mexico incident, Rimuru had supplied 2,000 T-1000s 63 69.

Preparing for Extraterrestrial Threats

Fury informed Rimuru that S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Security Council’s permanent members had appointed him an honorary consultant and special external member. Tony had consented as Rimuru’s legal guardian, despite Rimuru not agreeing personally. Fury then requested his help investigating the immovable hammer in New Mexico 69.

Evidence of Thor, Asgard, and the Destroyer led Fury to create the Myth Returns file. He raised the priority of related incidents and ordered research into Asgard’s politics, the Bifrost, and relevant experts. He also asked Coulson to investigate insurance for supernatural damage 81.

Fury later negotiated a special supply of Extremis serum for injured agents. In exchange, he agreed to lend Rimuru his highly classified Flerken and eventually delivered the orange cat in person 104 127.

The Avengers Initiative and Battle of New York

When Loki seized the Tesseract, Fury activated the Avengers Initiative and recruited Steve Rogers, Bucky, Tony Stark, Banner, Natasha, and Rimuru. Rimuru agreed to participate in return for restricted, short-term access to the Tesseract after the conflict 155.

The alliance nearly fractured when Steve and Tony exposed Phase Two, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secret Tesseract-powered weapons program. Fury defended it as a response to Earth’s inability to withstand threats like the Destroyer 163 164.

After Loki critically wounded Coulson, Fury discovered the recovery potion Rimuru had secretly provided. He and Coulson staged Coulson’s death to unite the divided Avengers; the deception succeeded in bringing the team together against the invasion 167 169.

During the battle, the World Security Council bypassed Fury and ordered a nuclear strike on New York. Fury destroyed one departing fighter with a cannon while T-1000s dismantled the second and secured its warhead, preventing the strike 173.

Afterward, Rimuru’s unexpected departure for Asgard disrupted Fury’s plans for reconstruction, land negotiations, and cooperation involving the Ultimate Nullifiers 180.

The Skrull Reckoning

When Rimuru confronted him about Skrull infiltration, Fury initially rejected the possibility of rebellion, citing nearly twenty years of cooperation. He eventually accepted Rimuru’s warnings about replacement, civil war, and Super-Skrulls, and agreed to support an operation against the Skrulls on Earth 212 213 215.

Fury then revealed that their numbers had grown to at least hundreds of thousands. He supplied biological samples and intelligence for Tony and Banner’s detection device, recalled Carol, and brought her to the Avengers’ meeting 215 223 224.

During the global purge, Fury left operational command to the others and handled containment and public stability. He ordered lockdowns, transport restrictions, and controls on public discussion to prevent panic and interference 232.

After high-ranking Skrulls disappeared, Fury lured alarmed mid-level infiltrators into a S.H.I.E.L.D. branch. He sealed the exits, immobilized them with a suppression field, and had T-1000s kill them. Although their removal crippled valuable contacts, resource networks, and projects, he prepared to proceed with the wider level-two purge 234.

Appearance

  • Dark skin, a single functioning eye, and a black eyepatch are his most recognizable features 13 57 222.
  • Typically wears black leather clothing or a long black trench coat 13 127.
  • Usually maintains a solemn expression and restrained bearing, particularly when confronting subordinates or adversaries 13 61 127.

Personality

Fury is guarded, calculating, and willing to manipulate allies for strategic ends. He exploits Tony’s nominal guardianship to recruit Rimuru, falsely reports T-1000 losses to retain the robots, and turns Coulson’s near-death experience into a deception designed to unite the Avengers 69 153 155 167.

His underlying priority is protecting Earth and humanity. That goal drives both his controversial weapons program and his refusal to permit the Council’s nuclear strike on New York. Rimuru considers this commitment sufficient reason to preserve their working relationship despite Fury’s underhanded methods 164 173 215.

His confidence can become overconfidence. Fury initially treats the Skrulls’ years of service as proof of their loyalty, leaving him unprepared for Rimuru’s accusations. His usual composure also repeatedly breaks under revelations about Hydra, Captain America’s survival, and Rimuru’s knowledge of classified secrets 54 56 104 212.

He shows genuine attachment to Coulson and striking tenderness toward the Flerken. Coulson’s critical injuries cause him visible grief, while holding or petting the orange cat softens his normally imposing demeanor 127 155 167 222.
