Background / History
Exile to Midgard
Thor was raised as Asgard’s prince, studying its histories and divine epics. His early understanding of kingship emphasized conquest and martial glory rather than protecting others. After his recklessness started a war, Odin removed his powers and banished him to Midgard to learn humility, responsibility, and sacrifice 70 76 182.
S.H.I.E.L.D. detained Thor after he broke into its New Mexico installation to retrieve Mjolnir. Rimuru visited his cell, explained Odin’s intentions, and proposed that he earn food and lodging by moving equipment and maintaining order at the base. Thor’s next attempt to lift the hammer still failed 70 71.
Loki then appeared and claimed that Odin had died because of Thor’s actions. Thor was devastated until Rimuru exposed the lie: Odin had entered the Odinsleep. The deception began to break Thor out of his self-pity and redirect his attention toward becoming worthy of Mjolnir 71 72.
The Destroyer and Restoration
The Warriors Three and Sif reached Earth with Heimdall’s help. Sif confirmed that Odin was alive and reported that Loki had seized the throne, imprisoned Odin, and sealed the Bifrost. Loki responded to their intervention by sending the Destroyer to kill Thor and anyone sheltering him 73.
Although powerless, Thor ordered the townspeople to evacuate and urged his companions to leave because the Destroyer was targeting him. As Rimuru fought the construct, Thor recognized that true strength required compassion, restraint, and the willingness to protect the weak. This realization restored his divine power without his first suffering a near-fatal blow 74 76.
Thor destroyed the armor with Mjolnir, inadvertently frustrating Rimuru’s attempt to receive a direct lightning strike for training. Afterward, he promised Asgard would compensate Earth for the damage, assured Jane Foster that he would return, and departed with his companions to secure Asgard and awaken Odin 76 77.
Loki’s Return and the Battle of New York
After the Bifrost shattered and Loki fell into deep space, Thor believed his brother dead. Asgard held a royal funeral, and Thor blamed himself for failing to save him. Discovering Loki alive and involved in an invasion of Midgard brought both relief and anger 160.
Thor intercepted the Quinjet carrying Loki but stopped his attack when he recognized Rimuru. He carried Loki to a wilderness cliff and tried to persuade him to abandon his ambitions and return home. Their confrontation became an increasingly bitter argument, secretly watched by Tony, Steve, and Rimuru 159 160.
Aboard the Helicarrier, Thor enjoyed Rimuru’s Moutai with Tony, turning part of the tense briefing into a drinking session. He later joined the objections to Fury’s Tesseract-based weapons program. When the Mind Stone intensified the group’s hostility, Rimuru blocked its interference and treated their agitation 161 162 163 164.
During the invasion, Thor confronted Loki on Stark Tower. Once persuasion failed, he chose his duty to protect Earth over his brother’s demands. Loki’s enhanced fighting style initially forced him onto the defensive, but Thor later pinned down and beat him while Rimuru’s mechanical forces overwhelmed the Chitauri 170 173.
Preparing Asgard for Ragnarok
After the battle, Thor escorted the bound Loki home using the Tesseract and welcomed Rimuru as a guest. In Asgard, he enthusiastically recounted Rimuru’s victories before Odin and Frigga 180 181.
Thor learned during Rimuru’s negotiations with Odin that he had an older sister, Hela, whose release threatened Asgard. Despite more than a thousand years of life and a royal education, he had never heard of her. Frigga stopped his questions during the audience and subsequently led him away 182 183.
Thor accompanied Rimuru to Nidavellir to commission equipment for Pietro. When Rimuru proposed sheltering the Dwarves from Ragnarok, Thor initially suggested hiding all of Asgard as well. Rimuru explained that this would not escape Asgard’s fate and would abandon the Nine Realms. Thor accepted the wider responsibilities of a future god-king and supported providing the Dwarves with an independent means of survival 186 188.
During Rimuru’s Demon Lord evolution, Thor finally fulfilled his promise to strike him with divine lightning. After the breakthrough, he celebrated his friend’s growth and flew with him over Asgard. Rimuru pledged to protect the realm until Thor could shoulder the duties of god-king 189 190 192.
Before leaving, Rimuru introduced Thor to Veldora and asked him to arrange the dragon’s accommodations. The two quickly became engrossed in conversation. Veldora’s agreement to remain as Asgard’s guardian greatly eased Thor’s anxiety about the realm’s future 195 196.
Appearance
- Build: Tall, muscular, and physically imposing even while deprived of divine power 70 195.
- Hair: Blond 70 160.
- Divine manifestation: Brilliant golden lightning surrounds him when his power reawakens, with his hair flying and his bearing becoming majestic 76.
Personality
Thor initially combines sincere intentions with pride, impulsiveness, and an appetite for battle. His exile exposes how heavily he has relied on inherited power and status. His decisive change comes when he recognizes that a god’s authority carries an obligation to protect others rather than dominate them 70 73 76.
He remains hearty, enthusiastic, and emotionally transparent after this awakening. His extravagant praise embarrasses Rimuru, but his delight in Rimuru’s advancement is entirely genuine. Rimuru values him as a straightforward friend whose company requires neither suspicion nor calculation 181 192.
Thor’s attachment to Loki makes him vulnerable to deception and repeatedly draws him into attempts at reconciliation. Nevertheless, when Loki refuses to stop the invasion, Thor is willing to fight him to defend Earth 71 160 170.
His growth does not immediately make him ready to rule. Odin still considers him too immature to face Ragnarok, and Thor only later begins to grasp that Asgard’s responsibilities extend to the peoples of all Nine Realms 182 183 188.
