Background / History
Childhood and Martial Education
Wang Yuyan grew up secluded at Mantuo Manor under her mother, Li Qingluo. She had met very few men; her cousin Murong Fu was the one she knew best, and she had admired him since childhood 30.
Her extensive martial education came from the manuals Li Qingluo had removed from Langhuan Blessed Land and brought to Gusu. The collection included Carefree Sect texts and martial arts from the hundred schools of the Central Plains, earning Wang Yuyan her reputation as a living encyclopedia 12.
Li Qingluo concealed her parents’ survival from her daughter, dismissing questions about them by saying they had died. Wang Yuyan only learned that her maternal grandparents were alive through Xu Xiao 65.
Abduction from Mantuo Manor
Xu Xiao initially considered Wang Yuyan a possible teacher because of her martial knowledge, but later went to Mantuo Manor intending to take her for himself. Before meeting her, he revealed to A Zhu that the two women shared the same father, Duan Zhengchun 9 29.
Their first meeting occurred in a pavilion among the manor’s camellias. Unaware that Xu Xiao had already overpowered the guards, Wang Yuyan warned him to leave before the servants killed him. He instead seized her despite her protests and flew away with her, A Zhu, and A Bi 30.
Wang Yuyan resisted when she understood that she was being abducted. She appealed to Murong Fu’s protection and the Wang Clan’s influence, then called for her mother after spotting the family’s boats on Lake Tai. Xu Xiao confronted Li Qingluo, immobilized her, and destroyed five escort vessels. Unable to secure her daughter’s release, Li Qingluo was left behind while Xu Xiao continued toward Kaifeng 31 32 33.
Travels with Xu Xiao
Xu Xiao promised Wang Yuyan, A Zhu, and A Bi a wedding in the Great Song imperial palace. They accompanied him through his seizure of authority at court and remained under his protection in Daqing Hall during the rebellion in Kaifeng 33 39 43 46.
By their stay in Hebei, the narrative describes all three women as having accepted their positions in his household, though they remained cautious around him. Wang Yuyan called him “Husband” and correctly observed that coercing martial organizations might not work as well as coercing the imperial court 51.
During the ambush on Western Xia’s First-Class Hall, she noticed that a distant fighter’s martial arts resembled Murong Fu’s. She could not confirm his identity and did not ask, following Xu Xiao’s prohibition against the women interfering in his affairs 61.
Reunion with Wuyazi
At Mount Leigu, Xu Xiao brought Wang Yuyan to meet her maternal grandfather, Wuyazi. Her resemblance to Li Qiushui initially stunned him, but he joyfully welcomed her once their relationship was explained 65.
Wang Yuyan spent half an hour recounting her family life and introduced Xu Xiao as her husband, proudly describing his authority and martial strength. Their family connection also served Xu Xiao’s purpose of gaining Wuyazi’s trust and cultivation guidance 65 66.
Her ancestry did not grant access to the Carefree Sect’s restricted teachings. After appointing Xu Xiao sect leader, Wuyazi sent her to another room before revealing the sect’s greatest secret 67.
Wedding and Motherhood
The promised grand wedding eventually took place in Kaifeng. Before departing, Xu Xiao strengthened the women in his family and arranged protection for his household 86.
Wang Yuyan later appears at Chang’an Imperial Palace in the Great Tang Twin Dragons World with her son, Xu Tianci, who is not yet one year old. When Xu Xiao’s divine light triggers a transformation in the child, his God Projection appears to reassure her. Xu Tianci’s bloodline is expected to stabilize at the Martial Dao’s Innate realm; this advancement belongs to her son, not Wang Yuyan 238.
Appearance
- Exceptional beauty: Xu Xiao is momentarily speechless upon first seeing her, describing her as though she had stepped out of a painting 30.
- Resemblance to Li Qiushui: Her facial features are virtually identical to her grandmother’s youthful appearance, enough for Wuyazi to mistake her for Li Qiushui 65.
- Clothing at her introduction: A white ruqun, worn while seated in the camellia pavilion 30.
- Voice: Sweet and clear, compared to a lark’s song 30.
- Bearing: A refined Jiangnan young lady with scholarly grace and sheltered innocence 82.
Personality
Wang Yuyan is educated, courteous, and kindhearted. Even when confronted by an unfamiliar, intimidating man, she asks his identity rather than immediately screaming, then warns him of the danger posed by her household’s guards. Her sheltered upbringing nevertheless leaves her inexperienced with threats outside the world she knows 30 31.
She can be outspoken where martial principles or Murong Fu are concerned, challenging Xu Xiao’s boast of possessing an unrivaled martial art and defending her cousin from his insults. After repeated intimidation, however, she becomes more guarded about intervening in Xu Xiao’s decisions 30 31 61 82.
As a new mother, she is protective and reluctant to let Xu Tianci wander alone. Despite his unusually early development, she holds his hand for daily walks through the palace 238.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts Scholarship
Wang Yuyan’s principal documented talent is her extensive knowledge of martial arts, acquired through reading from childhood 12 31.
- Breadth of knowledge: Familiar with the martial traditions of the hundred schools through her family’s collection of manuals 12.
- Recognition of techniques: Notices the resemblance between a distant combatant’s martial arts and Murong Fu’s, although distance prevents certainty 61.
- Understanding of mastery: Rejects the idea that a technique itself can be unrivaled, emphasizing the difference made by its practitioner 31.
- Limits: Her scholarship does not allow her to identify Xu Xiao’s flight, which lies outside her prior experience 31.
Strategic Judgment
- Recognizes that martial organizations and the imperial court require different approaches, reasoning that overwhelming pressure alone may fail to produce the desired response from the martial world. Xu Xiao explicitly praises her assessment 51.

- Li Qiushui — Maternal grandmother, whose youthful appearance Wang Yuyan closely resembles 12 65.
