Background / History
Inheritance and the Defias raids
Milly grew up on the grape estate founded by her father. After his death, she inherited both the business and his title of baron. She surpassed him in grape cultivation and winemaking, maintaining the largest and most renowned grape estate in Northshire. Her beauty, property, and noble standing attracted numerous suitors, but she preferred tending her land to associating with conceited nobles 14 50.
The estate’s prosperity attracted peripheral members of the Defias Thieves’ Brotherhood. They trampled crops, damaged facilities, and packed stolen grapes into barrels. Milly’s private soldiers—farmworkers with limited militia training—could defend the main buildings but could not reclaim the fields. Official assistance was costly and ineffective: the thieves withdrew when troops arrived, while the soldiers demanded bribes, wages, and free provisions 14 17.
Meeting Aige
Captain Claude sent Aige to the estate with a letter of recommendation. Milly initially doubted whether the scrawny young mercenary could help, but a demonstration of fire magic convinced her. She apologized and personally served him lunch and homemade wine 14.
She employed him to clear the vineyards, then entrusted him with eliminating the nearby thieves’ camp. When he volunteered for the latter task, her concern shifted from his ability to his safety 15.
| Task | Requirements | Promised Payment | Additional System Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear the vineyard thieves | Bring back at least eight Brotherhood masks | One silver coin | Experience and 10 Arcane Dust 14 15 |
| Destroy the thieves’ grape barrels | Smash at least eight large barrels | One silver coin | Experience and 10 Arcane Dust 14 15 |
| Eliminate the remaining threat | Kill the camp’s thieves and leader; retrieve the leader’s token | Three silver coins and the Wine-Stained Cloak | Experience and one random one-star basic, white, or blue card 15 |
Aige completed the two vineyard tasks and defeated the camp’s leader. After surviving an ambush, he returned to the estate visibly wounded. Milly rushed to embrace him and insisted on bandaging him herself; they became lovers that night 15 16 17.
Marriage and Aige’s departure
The following morning, Milly recognized Aige’s unease about remaining at the estate. She explained that childhood testing had revealed almost no magical talent and that her constitution and personality were unsuited to becoming a Warrior. Expecting an ordinary human lifespan, she feared she might not live to see the achievements of a mage capable of surviving for centuries. Aige nevertheless declared her his lawful wife and the estate his home, promising to return throughout his travels 17.
They celebrated with a modest feast for the nearby farmworkers rather than a grand wedding. Milly adopted her married name and changed her hairstyle to signal her marriage. Aige stayed for over a month, clearing nearby threats and making the estate’s surroundings notably safer 18.
Before leaving, Aige supplied Milly with protective equipment, healing bandages, and a spatial bag. She promised to prepare food for his journey and immediately found a practical use for the bag: transporting an enormous barrel of grapes without workers or carts. Aige also asked Claude to look after her while he was away 18 19 21.
Carl Frank’s visit
While Aige was away, Carl Frank visited with hopes of courting Milly and eventually marrying her. Milly’s inherited title meant Carl could not simply coerce her, and her estate made the marriage financially attractive. On seeing Milly’s married hairstyle, Carl abandoned the pursuit. Their meeting remained a business visit: they signed an order for the following quarter’s supplies, and Milly gave Carl a bottle of five-year-old wine 50.
Returning to visit his wife, Aige spotted Carl’s carriage at the estate. Already holding a mortal grudge against Carl, he interpreted the visit as a threat to Milly and followed the carriage to take revenge, unaware that Carl had withdrawn from pursuing her 49 50.
Appearance
Milly is described as a beautiful young human woman with a delicate appearance and a distinctive fragrance associated with her work among grapes and wine 14.
- Hair: Dark; after marrying Aige, she wears it in a locally recognized married woman’s style 16 18.
- Complexion: Fair 18.
- Manner: Graceful when entertaining guests, but visibly bashful when Aige praises her as a prospective wife 14 16.
Personality
Milly is industrious and devoted to her estate, aspiring to become the best farmer she can. Although wealthy suitors seek her out, she values her work over their attention. Her respect for powerful protectors is also practical: her livelihood is vulnerable because she lacks the martial strength to defend it herself 14 18.
Her hospitality toward Aige develops into genuine affection. She appreciates his strength without arrogance, worries about the danger of the bandit camp, and tends his injuries despite his objections. During their honeymoon, she watches him leave each day and waits to greet him on his return 15 17 18.
Milly is perceptive about both Aige’s feelings and the limits of their circumstances. She notices his hesitation after they become lovers and accepts that his ambitions will eventually take him away, even while openly grieving their separation 17 18.

Equipment / Items
- Enchanted silver wedding ring — Personally selected and enchanted by Aige. Its enchantment is described as +1 stamina when presented, but a later recollection gives +1 spirit; the passages provide conflicting descriptions 18 25.
- Rough cloth equipment — A full outfit supplied by Aige for additional protection 18.
- Standard-issue one-handed sword — Left by Aige for self-defense 18.
- Four-slot spatial bag — Approximately four cubic meters of storage. Milly uses it to transport a grape-filled barrel estimated to weigh a thousand jin 18.

- Estate workers — Her employees also provide the estate’s militia. She and Aige include them in their wedding feast 17 18.
