Appearance
- Original body: A white-haired elderly man 554.
- Surviving avatar: A luminous, tree-shaped incarnation that perceives its surroundings through spiritual power 722 723.
- Heart of Law: A spherical mass of black light, visibly fractured after Ning Chuan damages it 725.
Personality
Liu Cangdong is domineering and treats strength as authority. He openly declares that rules cannot restrain a Great River Realm Heavenly King and threatens to assassinate Ning Chuan regardless of the consequences. His protection of Xi Fengrou extends to rejecting a memory search even after privately learning that she took the disputed Realm-Breaking Dao Fruit 555 557 559.
His arrogance coexists with caution and self-preservation. He repeatedly guards against a possible Federation ambush, retreats when Ning Chuan falsely calls for reinforcements, and offers concessions when trapped. He also hesitates to expend the Holy Heaven Alliance’s Law Bombs because surviving the battle would not protect him from punishment for wasting them 612 618 619.
Before his forced conversion, Liu Cangdong would rather die than become a controlled agent of the Myriad Stars Divine Kingdom. After fusing with a Divine Oracle Talisman, he becomes reverent toward Ning Chuan and devoted to the Divine Kingdom. The transformation does not erase his personal desires, but prevents him from acting against the kingdom’s interests 723 724 725.
Abilities & Skills
Heaven-Overturning Seal
Liu Cangdong’s strongest martial art and one of the Heavenly Martial Realm’s guardian Marquis-Bestowing martial arts 611 758.
- Suppression: Solidifies surrounding space and restricts an opponent’s movement 612.
- Attack and defense: Produces an enormous seal capable of crushing space, intercepting attacks, and shielding its user 556 618.
- Spatial displacement: Clears Ning Chuan’s Blazing Nuclear Thorns by twisting the void and moving them elsewhere 611.
- Compensating for cultivation differences: Wei Chen states that the technique lets Liu Cangdong contend with him despite Wei Chen possessing a superior Law and realm 558.
- Limitations: Severe suppression of Force and Laws greatly reduces its effectiveness; Ning Chuan repeatedly cracks or destroys the seal under those conditions 618 619.
Law of Injury and Domain
Liu Cangdong cultivates a fourth-grade Law of Injury and combines Law with Force to produce dense black mist 637 758.
- Uses the mist for broad-area attacks and protection 619 637.
- Projects a Domain to investigate his surroundings and concentrate pressure on a target 609 612.
- Detects the fluctuations released when Ning Chuan uses his true disciple token to contest a martial casket, although Ning Chuan’s stealth alone escapes his notice 609.
- Cannot readily expel Heaven-Chaos Force from his wounds. Diverting too much Law and Force into combat allows the lingering energy to destroy his regenerated flesh 623 627 639.
Gloomlight Spear
A General-Bestowing throwing martial art associated with the third-grade Heaven and Earth Piercing Law 639.
- Launches a pitch-black war spear at exceptional speed; Ning Chuan narrowly responds to it during the battle with the Ice Lightning Tiger 617 639.
- Belongs to the same inheritance as the Heaven-Overturning Seal and Mountain and River Seal, and is exclusive to the Ultimate Weapon Art 639.
- Its underlying Law emphasizes speed and killing power; at profound mastery, it can disregard distance 639.
Avatar Survival
- Survives the destruction of his original body because an avatar remains elsewhere 639.
- His damaged Heart of Law returns to that surviving incarnation 639.
- Survival comes at a substantial cost: the loss of half his soul and severe damage to his Heart of Law leave him barely able to maintain River Realm strength 639 723.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Casket-Breaking Secret Keys — Holds two while pursuing Nine Steps to the Ends of the World. During his escape from Origin Martial Mountain, he passes one to a Beast Emperor Hall elder 609 620.
- Law Bombs — Entrusted with three Great River Realm-level bombs by the Holy Heaven Alliance’s leader for the struggle over the Prison-Suppressing Dao Lineage. Expends two to exhaust the Heaven-Trapping Net’s barrier 619.
- Heaven-Trapping Net — Arranges to borrow the Mystic Weapon Pavilion’s sealing weapon for an ambush; its barrier subsequently traps him with Ning Chuan 609 618.
- Mountain and River Seal Martial Seal — Gives Ning Chuan a single-use inheritance seal during negotiations over the Divine Martial Stele’s special passages 585.
- Spatial ring — Seized by Le Yu after Ning Chuan destroys much of his left side 619.
- Mental ring — Contains numerous holy medicines, weapons, and martial arts; confiscated by Ning Chuan at the Beast Emperor Hall 723.
History
Authority in the Beast Emperor Hall
Liu Cangdong holds unquestioned authority within the Beast Emperor Hall. Xi Fengrou’s tamed beasts are gifts from him that he can reclaim at will. Her position as saintess depends on retaining his favor; a former saintess has already fallen below the status of a servant after losing it 541.
Conflict over Xi Fengrou
Liu Cangdong intervenes when Ning Chuan holds Xi Fengrou captive. He demands her release, Fan Yu’s spatial ring, and Ning Chuan’s submission to the Holy Heaven Alliance’s judgment. Although Xi Fengrou privately admits taking the Realm-Breaking Dao Fruit, he refuses Ning Chuan’s proposed memory search 554 555.
Wei Chen and Bai Qi interrupt his attempt to suppress Ning Chuan. Fighting together, they injure Liu Cangdong and nearly break his Heaven-Overturning Seal. He secures a halt by threatening a wider war that would leave the Divine Martial Stele’s inheritance open to the foreign races 556.
To recover Xi Fengrou, he obtains two Realm-Breaking Dao Fruits from Xiao Chen and Zhang Tianzhi at considerable personal cost. Ning Chuan accepts the fruits and releases her, but refuses to return Fan Yu’s ring 561.
Struggle for the Divine Martial Stele
During the battle outside the stele, Liu Cangdong cannot break away from Bai Qi to pursue Ning Chuan. He orders Zhang Yunwang and Chen Zeyue to deal with him, instructing Chen Zeyue to use the Key-Seeking Compass inside the stele if necessary 578.
He later surrenders a Mountain and River Seal inheritance in exchange for Ning Chuan’s promised assistance with the special passages. Ning Chuan instead directs a passage toward an alien Heavenly King and offers further help if the aliens kill Liu Cangdong 585.
At Origin Martial Mountain, Liu Cangdong uses two Casket-Breaking Secret Keys to contest the casket containing Nine Steps to the Ends of the World. Ning Chuan overrides their attraction with his true disciple token and takes the casket. Liu Cangdong pursues him to the Suppressing Platform, where the platform’s power reverses his advantage 609 610 612.
Defeat and Loss of His Original Body
After Le Yu’s restraining array runs out of energy, Liu Cangdong joins the remaining River Realm Heavenly Kings against Ning Chuan. Their coordinated resistance collapses when Ning Chuan kills the Ice Lightning Tiger. Liu Cangdong uses two Law Bombs to break the Heaven-Trapping Net’s barrier, but cannot disable the platform’s suppression 616 617 619.
He escapes with catastrophic injuries and endures a pursuit lasting several hours. Sacred medicine later restores his missing body parts, but the Heaven-Chaos Force within him continues to consume his strength 620 621 623.
Their next decisive encounter occurs near Weapon Forest Valley. Ning Chuan’s improved movement and attacks overwhelm him. Liu Cangdong unleashes his full defensive strength to survive a blow, allowing his old wounds to reopen; Ning Chuan then destroys his original body. A surviving avatar prevents his complete death 637 638 639.
Forced Conversion
Ning Chuan infiltrates the Beast Emperor Hall and immobilizes Liu Cangdong’s surviving avatar. Liu Cangdong recognizes him through his soul fluctuations but accepts the accompanying claim that he is an undercover Divine Envoy 722 723.
He initially refuses conversion and attempts to provoke Ning Chuan into killing him. Ning Chuan instead attacks his soul and searches his memories, obtaining extensive intelligence about the Heavenly Martial Realm and Gu Yunyou’s connection to the Moxuan Consortium. After prolonged coercion and an initially failed talisman fusion, Liu Cangdong is successfully converted 723 724.
As Ning Chuan’s subordinate, he suppresses discussion of the Beast Emperor Hall’s missing beasts and supplies Martial Seals containing nearly all the Heavenly Martial Realm’s martial arts. He then carries Ning Chuan to the Blood Curtain Plateau while pretending that his only purpose is to witness his old enemy’s death 726 728.
Service and Final Death
Liu Cangdong helps Ning Chuan ambush Li Wenyue, advises him on obtaining guardian martial arts through the alliance’s merit system, and participates in his dealings with Horse Road Mountain 732 758 764.
His service ends when Ren Cang’s Soul-Controlling Seed exposes Ning Chuan’s false Divine Envoy identity. Liu Cangdong and Nanshan Gong demand an explanation; Ning Chuan admits the deception and kills them both 776.
Relationships
- Ning Chuan — Initially a target of intimidation and repeated assassination attempts; later his captor, coerced master, and eventual killer 559 724 776.
- Xi Fengrou — Favored saintess whose beasts and position depend on him. He pays heavily to rescue her, but she later helps Ning Chuan capture him 541 561 722.
- Gu Yunyou — Holy Heaven Alliance leader who entrusts him with Law Bombs. After conversion, Liu Cangdong conceals his service to Ning Chuan from him 619 728.
- Xiao Chen and Zhang Tianzhi — Alliance associates who provide the fruits used to ransom Xi Fengrou. Liu Cangdong agrees to share an inheritance opportunity for Nine Steps to the Ends of the World if its Martial Seal permits multiple uses 561 566.
- Bai Qi and Wei Chen — Federation opponents who jointly defeat him while protecting Ning Chuan 556.
- Li Wenyue — Fellow alliance member whom Liu Cangdong helps Ning Chuan capture; subsequently serves alongside him 732 758.
- Nanshan Gong — Fellow subordinate during Ning Chuan’s later infiltration operations; killed with Liu Cangdong when the disguise is exposed 764 776.
