Background / History

Origins and departure from Earth

Piccolo is identified as the Demon King’s son and initially continues to call himself King Piccolo. His lineage traces back to Katatz, an exceptionally gifted Dragon Clan Namekian whose descendants inherited unusual combat talent. The division between Kami and King Piccolo left that original Namekian incomplete 54 61 62 430.

After secretly following Turles, Piccolo proposes fighting him alongside Goku. Their coordinated physical attacks and combined Kamehameha and Special Beam Cannon fail, and Turles’s released Ki pins both fighters down. Piccolo subsequently joins Goku, Tien Shinhan, Krillin, and Chiaotzu in entering the Frieza Force 60 61.

Discovering his Namekian heritage

On Namek, Nail welcomes Piccolo as a kinsman. For the first time, Piccolo feels that he belongs among others rather than existing as an outsider or monster. Nevertheless, he rejects the Grand Elder’s offer of a home, insisting that learning his origins is enough and that battle suits him better 62.

The Grand Elder unlocks his potential, briefly giving him a commanding lead over Goku. Goku’s rapid improvement soon erases that advantage, leaving Piccolo frustrated and increasingly determined to overcome the limitations of his incomplete Namekian body 62 67.

Frieza Force service and rivalry with Goku

Piccolo becomes a regular sparring partner for Goku and develops a duplication technique suited to fighting multiple opponents. During an attack on Sorbet’s base, he destroys three silver Armored Squadron clones while Amond and the others recover. Afterward, he senses a stronger threat and wonders whether its approach concerns time rather than distance 84 95.

His difficulty keeping up with Goku also influences his interest in Gohan. Piccolo reasons that training a Saiyan stronger than Goku would offer another way to challenge his rival. He persuades the book-loving child to study a fight by promising to take him somewhere with many books 147.

The Heeters and the battle for Namek

During the Heeters crisis, Piccolo retrieves the psychologically broken Vegeta and retreats rather than risk an attack that his instincts warn would be fatal. Recognizing the need for greater strength, he later spends a year training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber 161 163 168.

When Namek is attacked, Piccolo evacuates Dende while Goku confronts the approaching enemy. The Grand Elder unlocks his renewed potential, allowing him to return against Gokua. He and Goku then attempt to hold off all four Hera warriors; Bujin restrains him with psychic threads, and Zangya blasts off his right arm 168 169 170 171.

Piccolo also proposes using Namek’s Dragon Balls to evacuate its people to Earth. In the final struggle against Jass, he joins the effort to resist the planet-threatening energy ball, then contributes Ki that Turles absorbs through Spirit Fission 179 198.

Dabura and Hirudegarn

Piccolo and Goku are badly outmatched by Dabura, whose demonic flames consume Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon. After Goku restores himself with a Senzu Bean, he entrusts Piccolo with protecting Tapion while he attempts a new transformation 257.

Later, Piccolo pursues a specifically Namekian route to power on New Namek, using ancient knowledge preserved by Grand Elder Mulin. He summons Porunga after receiving news of the crisis on Planet Konats and subsequently arrives there with dramatically increased strength 302 306.

His giant form initially meets the upgraded Hirudegarn head-on, but its armored shell withstands his strongest attack. Repeated injuries and regeneration wear him down while Goku persuades Vegeta to fuse. Piccolo creates an opening for Gogeta to enter the fight and warns him about the monster’s shell 306 307 308 309.

Metal Planet and later training

Against the undead assault, Piccolo identifies the Metal Planet as a key target and attacks it with a concentrated Special Beam Cannon. Slug and the revived Jass intercept him, and pink gas later drains his Ki before the defenders can launch their coordinated attack 339 340 341.

Piccolo subsequently helps capture Android 17 and Android 18. He, Goku, and Vegeta then approach Golden Frieza with unsettling smiles and dark-red lights in their eyes; during the ensuing conflict, Turles knocks Piccolo out of the air with a strike to the neck 346 350.

In a later spar on King Kai’s Planet, Piccolo defeats Goku’s newly revealed Super Saiyan 3 by capitalizing on its heavy energy consumption 374.

Saganbo and reunification with Kami

Saganbo overwhelms Piccolo even in his orange state. Despite his injuries, Piccolo rises again to stop Saganbo from crushing Gohan’s skull. Saganbo retaliates by tearing off both of Piccolo’s arms and driving a claw through his abdomen 414 416.

The memory of that helplessness troubles Piccolo afterward. Kami offers to reunite with him, but Piccolo initially refuses because he will not sacrifice his independent identity for strength. Kami assures him that he will remain himself 430.

Their eventual fusion restores the complete Namekian without replacing Piccolo’s personality. He demonstrates his new strength against Goku and Vegeta, then defeats Ultimate Gohan in a training match by exploiting his student’s lack of practical combat experience 433 437 438.

During the Demon Realm invasion, Piccolo tears apart Salsa’s magic net and counters with a headbutt 451.

Appearance

• Normal form: Tall, muscular, and green-skinned, with green blood 306 308.
• Clothing: Commonly wears a heavy white turban and broad white cape, which he removes before serious fights 170 306.
• Giant form: Can enlarge himself enough to meet Hirudegarn at eye level 306.
• Awakened orange state: His skin becomes deep orange-yellow, his muscles enlarge, and the lines across his body turn dark red 414.
• Orange Piccolo after fusion: Displays a burly physique surrounded by a golden-orange aura 437.

Personality

Piccolo is proud, blunt, and intensely competitive. Goku’s ability to repeatedly overtake him becomes a source of humiliation, especially when he suspects Goku is deliberately holding back during their spars. He nevertheless continues seeking improvement rather than abandoning his own training 67 147 148.

His intimidating manner often conceals concern for others. Although he initially rejects Namekian hospitality and calls himself evil, he worries that another potential unlock could endanger the Grand Elder’s life. He later risks his own life defending Gohan from Saganbo 62 169 416.

Piccolo values his identity more than power. Even after suffering a devastating defeat, he refuses fusion with Kami until assured that he will remain himself. As a teacher, he is strict and demanding, criticizing Goku’s leniency while pushing Gohan to gain the combat experience needed to use his potential 376 430 438.

Ki Control and Perception

Piccolo combines precise energy control with sensitive awareness of other fighters.
