Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Base power level: 18,000 11 Already stronger than his father had been. Vegeta considers himself history’s strongest Saiyan until Frieza reveals Turles’s power level of 38,000.
Increased base strength after prolonged training 147 148 149 Roughly two years of intense training greatly improve his speed and strength. He pressures a restrained Goku but loses once Goku releases more power.
Recovery-induced power increase 156 159 Two Senzu Beans heal his severe injuries, followed by a dramatic rise in Ki that surprises Goku and Piccolo. The increase remains insufficient against Jass.
Super Saiyan — first documented use 239 240 Appears in golden-haired form against Gokua and destroys him. His newly acquired transformation consumes considerable energy because his control is still imperfect.
Super Saiyan 2 291 292 Reaches the threshold during gravity-chamber sparring with Goku; the following chapter explicitly identifies both fighters as Super Saiyan 2. Goku remains stronger.
Gogeta — temporary fusion 309 Learns the Metamoran Fusion Dance, synchronizes his Ki with Goku, and fuses after both recover with Senzu Beans. Gogeta then becomes a Super Saiyan.
Anger-amplified Super Saiyan 2 408 409 Trunks’s grave injuries trigger a surge of power against Yunba. Vegeta retains much of the increase after his initial anger subsides, although fatigue leaves him vulnerable.
Super Saiyan God — first transformation 437 Receives energy from five others, gaining crimson hair, divine flames, and Ki that the onlookers can no longer sense. Poor control exhausts the form in fewer than ten breaths of combat.
Super Saiyan God — subsequent use 441 443 450 Enters the form again during his fight with Broly and later uses scarlet God Ki against Yunba. Broly’s Super Saiyan power nevertheless overwhelms him.

Background / History

Vegeta is King Vegeta’s son and the bearer of the royal name Vegeta IV. Raised to believe he was the most gifted Saiyan warrior, he builds his identity around inherited status and exceptional strength. Even after Planet Vegeta’s destruction, he continues serving Frieza while knowing that Frieza murdered his people; he suppresses his hatred because acting on it would mean an early death 10 11 12.

As leader of Nappa and Raditz, Vegeta carries out planetary cleanup and conquest missions. His position becomes increasingly frustrating after Turles joins the Frieza Force, surpasses him in strength, and rises rapidly through its ranks. Vegeta’s efforts to restore his standing eventually draw him to the Sixth Branch, where stronger warriors challenge both his abilities and his assumptions about Saiyan superiority 9 13 34 39 114.

Appearance

  • Hair: Black and upright in his normal state; gold as a Super Saiyan and crimson as a Super Saiyan God 240 337 437.
  • Build: Muscular, with a physique emphasized by his close-fitting battle clothing 235.
  • Clothing: Wears Frieza Force battle suits, including a black bodysuit with white shoulder armor and leg guards, and a tight blue battle suit in a later appearance 235 337.
  • Bearing: Frequently folds his arms, raises his chin, and watches others from an elevated position 108 220 337.
  • Family resemblance: Resembles King Vegeta closely enough for both Bardock and Paragus to recognize his lineage 337 438.
  • Relative height: Slightly shorter than Bulma when he first approaches her about a gravity chamber 114.

Personality

Vegeta’s pride initially rests on a rigid hierarchy: royalty and natural talent should place him above low-class Saiyans. Turles’s superior power destabilizes that belief, while Goku’s repeated victories turn humiliation into an obsession with becoming stronger. He often interprets praise, mercy, and practical warnings as insults rather than assistance 11 12 90 147 159.

His early conduct is cold-blooded. He kills planetary inhabitants without hesitation and openly rejects Goku’s argument that Saiyans should atone for their violence. Nevertheless, defeat eventually pushes him beyond reliance on birthright: after Goku frightens him into abandoning a challenge, Vegeta resolves that a naturally gifted warrior should be able to match the hard work of a low-class one 39 108 109.

Vegeta remains uncomfortable with dependence and vulnerability. He rejects offered hands, conceals exhaustion in front of children, and initially refuses Fusion despite a desperate battle. Fatherhood begins to complicate those priorities: news of Bulma giving birth helps move him toward cooperation, while seeing Trunks gravely injured provokes a powerful protective rage 13 240 308 309 408 431.

Abilities & Skills

Martial Arts

Vegeta combines high-speed close combat with experienced defensive movements and tactical adjustments 439 443.

  • Deflects Broly’s initially unrefined punches with one hand and dismantles several attacks through technique 439.
  • Uses feints, low sweeps, and attacks from blind spots against stronger opponents 415 443.
  • Recognizes when Goku is observing his fighting style rather than fighting seriously 148.
  • Cannot consistently overcome overwhelming strength through experience alone; Broly rapidly learns from their exchanges and turns Vegeta’s tactics against him 443.

Ki Manipulation

Vegeta uses Ki for flight, energy attacks, defensive protection, and sensing other fighters 149 156 235 415.

  • Prince’s Tactics: A dense barrage of Ki Blasts intended to obstruct pursuit and create breathing room. Goku breaks through it by detonating the blasts before reaching them 149.
  • Final Flash: Gathers golden energy between his palms while preparing a coordinated attack on Metal Planet 341.
  • Dragon Fist: Strikes Gokua during their final exchange and breaks his sword 240.
  • Golden finishing blast: Obliterates Gokua and leaves a vast, scorched crater 240.
  • Aura shield: Provides protection but can be shattered by stronger attacks, as demonstrated by Saganbo 415.

Saiyan Recovery Growth

Recovering from serious injuries can greatly increase Vegeta’s strength 156 159.

  • After his defeat by Goku, Senzu-assisted recovery produces enough power to surprise both Goku and Piccolo 156 159.
  • His resulting confidence exceeds his actual advantage: Jass defeats him despite the increase 159.

Super Saiyan Transformations

Vegeta progresses through Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2, gaining greater speed, strength, and energy output 239 240 291 292.

  • His early Super Saiyan form is costly to maintain because he has only recently mastered the transformation 240.
  • Super Saiyan 2 produces a golden aura threaded with electrical arcs 291 439.
  • Anger over Trunks’s injuries temporarily intensifies his power; he subsequently integrates much of that increase rather than losing it entirely 408 409.
  • Sharing Goku’s transformation does not give him equal strength, control, or battle judgment 292.

Super Saiyan God

Vegeta first accesses God Ki through an energy-sharing transformation involving five other participants 437.

  • Gains crimson hair and eyes, restrained divine power, and a crimson aura 437 441.
  • Initially wastes the power through reckless release, losing the form after fewer than ten breaths of fighting 437.
  • Later transforms again against Broly and uses God Ki to stop Yunba’s charge and crack his fist 441 450.
  • Divine power does not make him unbeatable: transformed Broly breaks through his protection and outclasses him 443.

Metamoran Fusion

Vegeta learns the Fusion Dance from Goku on Planet Konats and successfully combines with him into Gogeta 309.

  • Requires the two Saiyans to synchronize their Ki and perform matching movements 309.
  • Vegeta insists they first heal to full strength with the last two Senzu Beans 309.
  • He agrees despite finding the dance deeply humiliating 309.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Frieza Force battle suits — His standard combat clothing; later examples include stretchable material 156 235.
  • Scouter — Initially central to his evaluation of strength. He stops routinely wearing it after learning that other fighters can alter their power levels during battle 11 108.
  • Single-person spherical spacecraft — Used to pursue Goku and Piccolo by tracing their departure records, and later to travel toward another battle 156 295.
  • Gravity training chamber — Seeks Bulma’s help obtaining one and later spars with Goku inside a specially reinforced chamber that their battle destroys 114 291 292.
  • Senzu Beans — Used for rapid recovery after severe injuries and before fusing with Goku 156 309.

Relationships

  • King Vegeta — Father. His praise helps establish Vegeta’s belief in his unmatched talent; his exile of Broly later makes Vegeta the target of Paragus’s inherited resentment 12 400 438.
  • Frieza — Superior and destroyer of his homeworld. Vegeta knowingly serves him while suppressing his hatred. Frieza uses Turles’s arrival and greater strength to undermine Vegeta’s confidence 10 11.
  • Turles — Rival and an early source of humiliation. Turles defeats him at headquarters, and his rapid promotion fuels Vegeta’s determination to excel in both combat and military achievement 13 34.
  • Son Goku / Kakarot — Principal rival, frequent sparring partner, rescuer, and fusion partner. Vegeta resents his mercy but ultimately cooperates with him against Hirudegarn 90 159 292 309.
  • Bulma — Partner and mother of his child. Their early exchanges are confrontational, but she later nurses him after his defeat and secures Senzu Beans for him 114 156 308.
  • Trunks — Son. Vegeta boasts about his Super Saiyan transformation and erupts in anger when he is gravely injured 372 408.
  • Future Trunks — Son from another timeline. Vegeta feels an unexplained bloodline connection when they first exchange glances, but does not initially know his identity 222 239 283.
  • Nappa and Raditz — Original squadmates and subordinates. Both tread carefully around his temper; their later satisfaction with stable lives leaves Vegeta feeling isolated 12 34 220.
  • Piccolo — Ally and occasional target of Vegeta’s provocations. They fight together against major enemies, although Piccolo also identifies the risks of Vegeta’s anger-driven combat 268 372 408 415.
  • Broly — Sparring opponent. Vegeta initially dismisses his crude fighting style, then acknowledges his ability as Broly’s growing power overwhelms multiple transformations 439 440 441 443.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Turles’s Arrival and the Vegeta Squad

  • Returns from the cleanup mission on Planet K-18x and is summoned to meet Frieza’s “new friend,” Turles 9.
  • Rejects the claim that a low-class Saiyan could possess a power level of 38,000, then suffers a brief, humiliating defeat when he attacks Turles 11 13.
  • Responds to Turles’s promotion by planning to recruit Kakarot as another worker for planetary conquests. Because Earth is one and a half to two years away, he orders missions selected along the route 34.

Pursuit of Kakarot

  • Attempts to avenge himself on Turles by attacking Goku, only to exhaust himself without landing a blow 90.
  • After seeing footage of Turles as a Super Saiyan and believing him dead, declares that he will become the next legendary warrior. Goku’s released power instead frightens him into submission, prompting a new commitment to training 108 109.
  • Returns much stronger after prolonged training but loses again. Following recovery, he pursues Goku and Piccolo into space, challenges Jass, and survives only because Goku intervenes 147 149 156 159.
  • Witnesses Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation immediately after being rescued by him, deepening his conflict over pride and dependence 160.

Becoming a Super Saiyan

  • Observes that Trunks and Goten can transform despite having weaker base power than his own. He begins questioning both raw strength and ruthlessness as supposed requirements 227.
  • Seeks Bulma’s help investigating the transformation, then appears as a Super Saiyan while rescuing the boys from Gokua 230 239.
  • Destroys Gokua but hides the transformation’s heavy toll from the watching children 240.
  • Charges Dabura despite Goku’s warning and is swiftly defeated. He subsequently witnesses Goku advance to Super Saiyan 2 256 258.

Super Saiyan 2 and Gogeta

  • Reaches Super Saiyan 2 during renewed sparring, but Goku defeats him through superior power, precision, and Instant Transmission 291 292.
  • Initially rejects Fusion against Hirudegarn. After Goku tells him Bulma has given birth, Vegeta relents and helps create Gogeta 308 309.

Metal Planet and Baby

  • Battles Bojack, prepares a Final Flash against Metal Planet, and is later shown badly beaten by Bojack 340 341 342.
  • Helps capture Android 17 and Android 18, then displays eerie smiles and glowing red eyes alongside Goku and Piccolo 346.
  • Attacks Turles during Baby’s confrontation with him. Turles deliberately avoids killing the affected fighters and incapacitates Vegeta 350.

Family, Divine Power, and Broly

  • Gains an anger-driven increase after Trunks is injured, but later falls when Saganbo exploits him as the weakest member of a three-fighter encirclement 408 409 415.
  • Continues training with Goku and identifies Super Saiyan 3’s excessive energy consumption as a serious drawback 431.
  • Experiences Super Saiyan God, initially loses it almost immediately, and then uses it again while fighting Broly 437 441.
  • Finds that neither divine power nor refined technique can overcome Broly’s transformed strength and rapid combat adaptation 443.
  • Later confronts Yunba again, stopping his attack with scarlet God Ki 450.

Alternate Timeline

  • In the ruined future visited by Turles, Bulma identifies Vegeta as her husband and Trunks’s father 110 111.
  • That timeline’s Vegeta became a Super Saiyan but died at the androids’ hands, as did Trunks and Son Gohan 111.
  • The visiting Future Trunks sees the main timeline’s Vegeta defeat Gokua, giving him a direct encounter with a father who had previously been a distant, indistinct figure 239 240.
