Background / History
University Life and Departure from Earth
Ye Fan entered Jiangcheng University alongside his close friend Pang Bo and became one of Li Qingshan’s students. He took detailed notes on his teacher’s explanations of the Dao De Jing, declined Lin Jia’s movie invitation to study, and borrowed a book concerning the evolution of the concept of Qi. Li Qingshan also introduced him to exercises that improved his body and spirit before he understood their cultivation significance 31 32 33.
Years later, Ye Fan joined his classmates on Mount Tai. At Jade Emperor Summit, their sightseeing was interrupted by nine dragon corpses towing an ancient bronze coffin. Their ensuing journey carried them away from Earth; Li Qingshan later recalled that the students had passed through the Five-Colored Altar site on Mars 31 73 382.
Spirit Ruins and the Search for Pang Bo
At Spirit Ruins Paradise, Li Qingshan gave Ye Fan and his classmates cultivation pills and warned them to keep their experiences in the Desolate Ancient Forbidden Land secret. After his departure, Elder Han attempted to probe Ye Fan’s Bitter Sea. A protective talisman left by Li Qingshan killed the elder through his malicious divine sense, while Ye Fan remained unaware of the attack 77.
After leaving Spirit Ruins, Ye Fan traveled with the Black Emperor, who offered cultivation guidance and helped investigate Pang Bo’s disappearance. Ye Fan initially distrusted the dog’s greed and schemes, but their shared dangers—and the revelation that Li Qingshan had entrusted the students to him—established genuine trust 221.
Seeking both strength and clues about Pang Bo, Ye Fan accepted the Black Emperor’s plan to become a vessel for the Demon Emperor’s Sacred Heart. Yan Ruyu placed the heart in his Life Spring, and Ye Fan extracted a bead of its blood essence with his cauldron. The attempt nearly drained him before the Green Copper piece suppressed the heart’s rampage 221 222.
During Ji Haoyue’s clash with Yan Ruyu, Ye Fan and the Black Emperor slipped away toward the lava lake to continue their search. Li Qingshan subsequently freed Pang Bo from the alien presence within him, prompting Ye Fan and his friend to express their gratitude 224 226.
The Mother Qi Cauldron and Purple Mountain
Ye Fan, Pang Bo, and the Black Emperor survived an encounter with the Bronze Immortal Palace and obtained the Mother Qi of All Things Source. Ye Fan forged this material into his personal cauldron. Li Qingshan later instructed him to strengthen his foundations rather than rely on his teacher to secure every opportunity 232 237.
Ye Fan joined Duan De and the Black Emperor’s grave-robbing venture after negotiating a thirty-five percent share and setting rules for their raids. Inside Purple Mountain, the trio avoided the central fighting and gathered valuables from fallen cultivators and abandoned chambers. Ye Fan restrained Duan De’s urge to enter battles far beyond their strength and witnessed the Hengyu Furnace destroy a Primordial Ancestral King 238 246 248 249.
When Li Qingshan appeared amid Purple Mountain’s extraordinary phenomena, Ye Fan initially struggled to reconcile the imposing figure with his familiar teacher. Their reunion confirmed how far Li Qingshan had advanced 254 258.
Reunions and the Outer Sea
At Jade Pool’s Zixia Peak, Ye Fan reunited with Pang Bo and several Earth classmates. He learned that Li Qingshan had arranged protection for them and welcomed Pang Bo’s decision to patiently rebuild his unstable cultivation foundation 265.
While exploring the outer sea during Li Qingshan’s Dao-Severing tribulation, Ye Fan encountered Ji Biyue pursuing the wounded Ji Ziyue. He killed her attacking death warriors, resisted her jade wheel, and refused to abandon Ji Ziyue. Forced into a dangerous strait, they were later freed when Lin Qingyao, accompanied by Jade Pool cultivators and the Black Emperor, shattered Ji Biyue’s trapping formation 274 278.
Source Arts Wager and the Emperor’s Palace
At the Yaoguang Stone Workshop, Ye Fan faced Nangong Qi in a public Source Arts wager. He countered Nangong Qi’s Earth Vein attacks and won the first two rounds. His stones revealed ancient insects sealed in Divine Source and, within the Immortal Grave, a Fighting Saint Ape that escaped with a sealed maiden and an ancient spear 293.
Ye Fan later explored the tomb beneath Licheng with Duan De and the Black Emperor. Amid the struggle over Great Emperor Wushi’s former palace, he and the Black Emperor succeeded in stealing the building and escaping the Holy Lands’ pursuit. They took refuge at Clumsy Peak under Li Ruoyu, with whom Ye Fan had already formed a teacher-and-friend relationship and obtained Nine Secrets: Jie 301 302 304.
Breaking the Sacred Body Curse
At the Taixuan gathering, Ye Fan defeated Zhao Hao of the Wanchu Holy Land, then accepted a challenge from Li Yun, a first-heaven Four Extremes cultivator. Still in Dao Palace, Ye Fan narrowly won by combining his emerging Yin-Yang understanding, the Battle Saint Method, and the weight of his Mother Qi cauldron 308 309 310.
After obtaining Nine Secrets: Xing at Saint Cliff, Ye Fan prepared to enter Four Extremes near the Desolate Ancient Forbidden Land. His physical transformation succeeded, but the Innate Dao Diagram appeared to crush his Dao foundation. Li Qingshan weakened its restraint long enough for him to flee into the forbidden land, where an ancient Sacred Body destroyed the diagram. Ye Fan stabilized his realm and achieved minor accomplishment, drawing the attention of factions throughout the Big Dipper 314 315 316.
At the subsequent Yaochi Grand Gathering, cultivators suggested that Ye Fan possessed the Ruthless Great Emperor’s inheritance. Li Qingshan rejected the accusation, killed the hidden instigator Yin Jiu, and publicly warned the assembled powers against targeting his student 320.
Appearance
- Features: A youthful face with delicate features and resolute eyes; a year of dangerous travel gave him greater composure and a more weathered bearing 237.
- Clothing: Wore green during the Holy City Source Arts wager and the Licheng expedition 293 301.
- Cultivation traits: Golden Qi and blood, a golden Bitter Sea, and a pale-golden halo accompany displays of his Sacred Body’s power 221 245 274.
- After the Four Extremes transformation: His flesh became translucent like jade, while pale-golden blood flowed through his renewed veins 315.
Personality
Ye Fan is studious and willing to examine the limits of his ideas. After spending more than a year trying to create a physical combat art, he acknowledged that inspiration alone was insufficient and that the established Secret Realm system remained his foundation. His wish to combine ancient Chinese wisdom with cultivation reflects his continuing attachment to Earth, where he hopes to return 33 221.
His loyalty repeatedly outweighs personal caution. He accepted the risks of hosting the Sacred Heart because it might help him find Pang Bo, and he refused to leave Ji Ziyue behind despite her urging him to escape alone. Li Qingshan likewise regarded him as generous toward acknowledged friends and teachers, willing to share precious resources and cultivation knowledge 221 274 304.
Ye Fan is ambitious without treating stronger cultivators as proof that his own efforts are futile. News of Li Qingshan’s achievements became motivation to reach—and eventually surpass—his teacher’s heights. He also distinguishes courage from recklessness: in Purple Mountain, he warned Duan De that entering the battle between Mighty Figures and ancient kings would get them killed 136 248.

- Received breathing, guiding, and visualization instruction from Li Qingshan before leaving Earth 33 73.

- Used Xing to rush into the Desolate Ancient Forbidden Land when Li Qingshan loosened the Innate Dao Diagram’s restraint 315.

- Used Yin-Yang power to dissolve portions of Li Yun’s holy-light offensive 309.
