Background / History
Yanqing repeatedly sparred with Ji Yuan after Ji Yuan challenged him despite losing their first bout in one move. Impressed by Ji Yuan's day-by-day progress, Yanqing continued taking their matches seriously and later accepted two Artificer's Workshop swords from him as thanks for the instruction. He resolved to train Ji Yuan more earnestly in return. 1 2
He serves as General Jing Yuan's disciple and a Cloud Knight. During a Buli Ren infiltration incident, Yanqing arrived with the Cloud Knights, slew the enemy leader with his flying swords, and saved Ji Yuan and Tingyun. His attempt at a dramatic victory pose immediately embarrassed him when his friends noticed. 6 25
Yanqing's sword lineage later expands through Jingliu, Jing Yuan's teacher and the former Sword Master of the Luofu. Jingliu's guidance to Ji Yuan, and Ji Yuan's subsequent improvement, motivate Yanqing to seek further growth rather than remain satisfied with his own talent. 87 88 89
Appearance
Yanqing is a handsome, youthful swordsman whose embarrassment is readily visible when his theatrical side is exposed. He carries a longsword and fights alongside multiple flying swords. 2 6
- Young-looking enough that Cloud Knights officers treat him with special familiarity and teasing. 7
- Often carries or controls several flying swords in addition to his primary blade. 2 88
- His aerial flying-sword combat has been compared to the image of a “young sword immortal.” 98
Personality
Yanqing is intensely devoted to swordsmanship. He eagerly abandons distractions for sparring, judges people through their martial potential, and encourages Ji Yuan to train rather than spend time on pursuits Yanqing considers less useful than sword practice. 8 43 53
Despite his confidence in battle, he is polite, earnest, and easily embarrassed. He initially refuses Ji Yuan's valuable gift out of principle, calls Ji Yuan “Brother,” and worries about Ji Yuan's health during dangerous missions. 2 6 77
He can be naïve and overly trusting around unfamiliar people, which prompts Ji Yuan to warn him to be more cautious. He is also vulnerable to frustration: during his first loss to Ji Yuan, a shout from nearby Cloud Knights disrupts his focus and contributes to his defeat. 42 89
