Background

In his youth, Yu Xiaogang formed the Golden Iron Triangle with Flender and Liu Erlong. The trio once saved Chen Qingfeng from a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast in the Star Dou Great Forest, driving it away with their Trinity Fusion Skill 3 20.

He was formerly romantically involved with Bibi Dong. Yue Guan threatened him and opposed their relationship, while Qian Xunji’s coercion led Bibi Dong to give him up. Yu Xiaogang continued to blame her for their separation and wanted to make her regret it 20 21.

Out of gratitude for the rescue, Chen Qingfeng housed Yu Xiaogang at Nuoding Academy for more than ten years. He received a monthly salary and a nominal teaching position without having to teach classes. His habit of belittling students and demanding expulsions over verbal disputes generated repeated complaints, which Chen suppressed for the sake of their friendship 3.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely concerned with his reputation as “Grandmaster.” Tang San’s admiration satisfies his vanity, while criticism of his research or cultivation provokes immediate anger. He habitually disparages less talented students, yet presents his refusal to teach them as evidence that only geniuses deserve his instruction 1 3.

His conduct changes according to his opponent’s strength. He attempts to intimidate students with his cultivation, backs down when Director Su intervenes, and later assumes that Tang Hao’s reputation will shield Tang San from the consequences of killing Gu Chen 1 6 23.

His attachment to Tang San combines protectiveness with self-interest. He repeatedly intervenes when his disciple is threatened, but also views Tang San as the means to vindicate his theories, restore his reputation, secure support in old age, and make Bibi Dong regret leaving him. In prison, he deliberately uses an act of self-sacrifice to recover Tang San’s wavering loyalty 6 7 20 21.

Abilities & Skills

Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao is a separately manifested Martial Soul with purple fur, a doglike appearance, and a piglike build 6.

  • Explosive attack: Releases a thunderous fart through the Soul Skill invoked as “A fart like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao.” Its use inside Dorm Seven injures thirteen students, four seriously 6 11.
  • Damage feedback: Yu Xiaogang suffers the damage inflicted on Luo Sanpao, allowing Director Su to injure him by striking the Martial Soul directly 7.
  • Combat limitations: Director Su defeats him decisively despite also being a Soul Grandmaster. Later, Gu Chen captures him before he can react 1 7 44.

Gu Chen’s upgrade panel identifies Luo Sanpao’s hidden nature and a possible evolution; Yu Xiaogang does not achieve this upgrade in the supplied chapters 6.

Property Panel Information
Current grade Low-grade Martial Soul 6
Hidden nature A stunted Radiant Sacred Dragon cub with barely detectable dragon bloodline 6
Potential upgrade Radiant Dragon Cub, an intermediate Martial Soul with its faint bloodline activated 6
Upgrade requirements One Hundred-Year light-type Soul Beast carcass and one Hundred-Year light-type Soul Ring 6

Trinity Fusion Skill

As a member of the Golden Iron Triangle, Yu Xiaogang can participate in a combined technique with Flender and Liu Erlong 3 20.

  • The trio used it to drive back a Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beast and save Chen Qingfeng 3.
  • The supplied passages do not describe its individual components or establish that Yu Xiaogang can reproduce its power alone.

Martial Soul Research

Yu Xiaogang presents himself as the author of the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and cites the work as proof of his standing as Grandmaster. Gu Chen publicly challenges its originality and usefulness 1.

Theory or Teaching Content
Martial Soul quality Innate Soul Power is directly proportional to Martial Soul quality 1.
Martial Soul classification Martial Souls are divided into Tool Martial Souls and Beast Martial Souls 1.
Martial Soul Mimicry Theory Plant-type Martial Souls can absorb beast Soul Rings 1.
Personal maxim “There are no trash Martial Souls, only trash Soul Masters” 1.

His reference materials include Soul Beast records copied from Spirit Hall. An illustrated guide among them documents more than ten thousand Soul Beasts, including their characteristics and weaknesses 19 31.

Cultivation Instruction

Yu Xiaogang devises cultivation plans for Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls and Blue Silver Grass 3 23.

  • Twin Martial Soul strategy: Cultivate one Martial Soul while leaving the second without rings until reaching Seven-Ring Soul Sage. He claims this would allow every ring subsequently added to the second Martial Soul to be at least fifty thousand years old 3.
  • Blue Silver Grass development: Recommends absorbing a poison-attribute Soul Beast’s ring, a direction Tang San welcomes because of his prior experience with poison 23.
  • Soul Ring limits: Relies on Spirit Hall records placing the First Soul Ring’s absorption limit at 432 years. Gu Chen’s two Thousand-Year rings contradict his expectations 44.
  • Flawed meditation method: Combines Spirit Hall and Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan cultivation methods. Gu Chen’s panel identifies hidden flaws that can cause Soul Power to clash within the meridians and injure the practitioner. Tang San has not learned it when Gu Chen examines it 19.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Confrontation with Gu Chen

After accepting Tang San as his disciple, Yu Xiaogang belittles Gu Chen’s level-one Innate Soul Power and Blue Silver Grass to emphasize Tang San’s prospects. Gu Chen retaliates by attacking his cultivation record, academy privileges, and published theories. When Yu Xiaogang summons Luo Sanpao to punish him, Director Su intervenes 1.

Yu Xiaogang then demands that Dean Chen expel Gu Chen. After the dean refuses, he issues an ultimatum: either he stays or Gu Chen stays. Chen tells him to leave. Yu Xiaogang immediately regrets the decision because he has no savings and is no longer eligible for Spirit Hall’s age-limited subsidy 3.

He restores Tang San’s confidence by explaining his proposed Twin Martial Soul cultivation strategy and promising to raise him into a god. He also plans to contact an old friend who is a Seven-Ring Soul Sage 3 4.

Dorm Seven Attack and Imprisonment

Tang San’s demand that Gu Chen apologize to his teacher escalates into a fight with Dorm Seven’s residents. Yu Xiaogang arrives after Tang San has been beaten, accuses the students of attacking his disciple, and releases Luo Sanpao’s Soul Skill inside the dormitory 5 6.

Director Su defeats him, and the patrol arrests both teacher and disciple. An expedited case results in a one-year prison sentence for Yu Xiaogang after his attack injures thirteen students, including four seriously injured. Tang San receives seven days 7 11.

The pair share a cell with Scar and his accomplices, Wolong and Fengchu. Yu Xiaogang suffers abuse and humiliation after intervening when Scar targets Tang San; the intervention also secures his disciple’s renewed devotion. Hoping to escape, he instructs Tang San to write to Flender 11 20.

Rescue and Return to Nuoding Academy

Tang Hao arrives before Tang San’s scheduled release, kills the three abusive inmates, and takes both prisoners away. Recognizing the Clear Sky Hammer, Yu Xiaogang realizes that his disciple is Clear Sky Douluo’s son and becomes more confident in Tang San’s future 20 21.

Dean Chen subsequently invites him back to Nuoding Academy. On returning to his office, Yu Xiaogang discovers that his Soul Beast records and other useful books have disappeared. Gu Chen had secretly taken them during his imprisonment 19 22.

Yu Xiaogang supports Tang San’s intention to kill Gu Chen but postpones revenge to prioritize obtaining Tang San’s first Soul Ring. He believes Tang Hao’s standing will protect his disciple from repercussions 23.

Capture by Gu Chen

Yu Xiaogang intervenes when Gu Chen restrains and whips Tang San, only to be captured himself by rapidly growing Blue Silver Grass. Unable to reconcile Gu Chen’s two Thousand-Year Soul Rings with his research, he concludes that Gu Chen must possess Twin Martial Souls and have concealed his true innate talent 44 45.

While being whipped, he offers to accept Gu Chen as a disciple, then demands that he kneel and perform eighty-one kowtows. He warns that cultivating Twin Martial Souls without his help could cause Gu Chen to explode and threatens to destroy him if he refuses 45.

Tang Hao interrupts the confrontation with a Clear Sky Hammer strike. The wind from the blow shatters Gu Chen’s Blue Silver Grass and sends Yu Xiaogang flying, leaving him battered and dazed 46.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple and intended proof of his teaching ability. Tang San’s loyalty survives doubts, imprisonment, and repeated humiliation 3 20 23.

  • Chen Qingfeng / Dean Chen — Former beneficiary of the Golden Iron Triangle’s rescue and his longtime patron at Nuoding Academy 3.
  • Su Wen / Director Su — Academy official who protects students from him, defeats him after the Dorm Seven attack, and arranges for the patrol to intervene 1 7.

  • Liu Erlong — Fellow member of the Golden Iron Triangle from his youth 20.
