Unreached Upgrades

Target Requirements / Obstacle
Golden Tree Martial Soul The Blue Silver Emperor’s next evolution possesses Ultimate life and light attributes. Required Immortal Herbs, including Radiant Sun Light Grass, lead Gu Chen to plan a search of the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 32.
Undying Physique Requires a ten-thousand-year life-attribute corpse, Soul Ring, and Soul Bone, plus a ten-thousand-year Ageless Fruit. The missing Soul Bone prevents the upgrade; its projected benefits include a thousand-year lifespan and exceptional life-path cultivation talent 35 36.

Background

Gu Chen grew up as an orphan in Holy Soul Village under Old Jack’s care. At six, awakening his Martial Soul also restored memories of his previous life, revealing that he had reincarnated into the Douluo Continent. His knowledge of the original story initially made him wary of Tang San and, especially, Tang Hao 2 4 32.

Despite awakening with Blue Silver Grass and only level-one Innate Soul Power, he used his Upgrade All Things ability to improve both his Martial Soul and innate aptitude before enrolling at Nuoding Academy. He initially entered as a work-study student assigned to Dorm Seven 2 4.

Appearance

  • Before the Blue Silver Emperor evolution: Black hair and black eyes; initially thin from his upbringing, though better food helped him fill out after acquiring money 32.
  • After evolution: Long blue hair, blue eyes, exceptionally fair skin, and more refined features 32.
  • Recognizability: Despite the transformation, Tang San recognized him immediately; Yu Xiaogang recognized him after being prompted and looking more closely 43 45.

Personality

Gu Chen is sharp-tongued, calculating, and unwilling to accept humiliation. When Yu Xiaogang belittles his talent, he publicly attacks the Grandmaster’s reputation and theories rather than defer to his seniority. He also uses moral arguments performatively, invoking his shared village background with Tang San to turn an audience against him 1 5.

His confidence rests on preparation rather than an assumption that he is already powerful. He avoids drawing attention with excessively valuable medicinal herbs, acquires spatial escape abilities before confronting Tang Hao, and seeks stronger allies instead of attempting to defeat a Titled Douluo himself 9 10 24 30.

He frequently manipulates Xiao Wu through promises of evolution, teasing, and calculated generosity. His initial interest in helping her includes gaining access to Da Ming and Er Ming. Nevertheless, he protects her from Tang Hao, assures her that he will not take her Soul Ring or Soul Bone, and privately resolves to repay the two beasts’ assistance 11 14 18 24 34.

Against enemies, he is vindictive and deliberately provocative. He targets Tang San’s family insecurities, prolongs the promised “hundred lashes,” and uses Ah Yin and her Soul Bone to force Tang Hao into a planned confrontation 43 44 47.

Abilities & Skills

Upgrade All Things

Gu Chen’s cheat displays upgrade panels visible only to him, identifying a target’s properties, its next evolution, and the materials required. He presents this ability to others as a god-bestowed Divine Power of Evolution; that explanation is his claim, not an independently established origin 2 13 14.

  • Upgrade targets: Martial Souls, Soul Beasts, medicinal herbs, meditation manuals, Soul Tools, Soul Rings, and his own body 14 17 28 34 36 38.
  • Material conversion: Required materials dissolve into golden light and merge with the target after he mentally confirms an upgrade 14 15.
  • Resource bootstrapping: Common ten-year Blue Silver Grass can be upgraded into older specimens, supplying materials for more demanding upgrades 2 15.
  • Attribute matching: A multi-attribute Soul Beast qualifies as long as it possesses the required attribute 9.
  • Detection: Panels allow him to distinguish Blue Silver Grass Soul Beasts from ordinary weeds and identify flaws in cultivation manuals 12 19.
  • Limits: Upgrades require specific materials, with increasingly demanding conditions at higher stages. He does not keep the ability active continuously because panels appear over everything in view 14 17.

Blue Silver Emperor and Blue Silver Domain

His evolved Martial Soul follows the life attribute rather than the poison-based route chosen for Tang San. It appears as translucent, sapphire-like grass with golden lines extending from its roots to its leaf tips 32.

  • Plant control: Directs surrounding plants and turns Blue Silver Grass within the domain into Blue Silver Emperors for his use 32.
  • Sensing: Probes the surrounding area and detects people entering his domain 32 44.
  • Interference protection: Blocks outside interference within the domain 32.
  • Martial Soul suppression: Causes Tang San’s ordinary Blue Silver Grass to resist his control and allows Gu Chen to overwhelm its attacks 43.
  • Restraint and punishment: Produces binding vegetation and multiple Blue Silver whips 40 45.
  • Locating Ah Yin: Uses his Martial Soul to find the former Blue Silver Emperor’s hiding place 41.

Soul Ring Skills

Ring Source Original Skill Upgraded Skill
First — thousand-year Hundred-year Ten-Thousand-Root Longevity Tree Blue Silver Rooting: draws power from the earth to replenish Soul Power 38. Power of the Earth: restores Soul Power and provides slight healing. Gu Chen later assesses that it reduces his effective Soul Power expenditure by at least ninety percent 38 41.
Second — thousand-year Roughly three-hundred-year Ten Thousand Leaf Grass Unending Life: slightly increases Blue Silver Emperor growth speed 40. Wild Growth: greatly accelerates growth, enabling waves of binding grass when combined with his domain 40 41.

Spatial Mobility

His spatial abilities come from his upgraded ring Soul Tool, rather than his life-type Martial Soul 17 41.

  • Space Mark: Returns him to a marked location, including across the distance between the Xiling Mountain Range and the Lake of Life 18 48.
  • Space Jump: Enables sudden repositioning and entry into Ah Yin’s enclosed stone chamber 40 41.
  • Passenger escape: Teleports away with Xiao Wu when Tang Hao attacks 23 24.
  • Mark limit: His Void Ring can maintain only two Space Marks as of Chapter 48. One is placed on Chang Qing at the Lake of Life as a secure return point 48.

Longevity Body and Life Cultivation

The Longevity Body gives him immense vitality and strong aptitude for the Dao of Life. Unlike vitality supplied by a Martial Soul, its benefits remain present without summoning or using that soul 35.

  • Gu Chen estimates that the physique alone could let him live for several hundred years, even without Soul Power 35.
  • His life-oriented Martial Soul, meditation method, and physique reinforce the same cultivation path 38.
  • The Lake of Life provides a particularly effective cultivation environment, exceeding the benefit he expects from a Blue Silver Grass mimicry environment 36.
  • Myriad Spirit Fruit, Ageless Fruit, and Longevity Fruit further increase his vitality and store medicinal energy in his body. He expects their residual power to assist him through level seventy 37.

Combat and Practical Skills

  • Attrition combat: Combines earth-powered replenishment, accelerated plant growth, domain control, and teleportation. He defeats Xiao Wu by repeatedly restraining her until she exhausts her Soul Power 40.
  • Blue Silver Grass harvesting: Learns through repeated kills that severing the stem disrupts a plant’s Soul Power output and quickly incapacitates it 15.
  • Memory and study: Memorizes the Intermediate Life Meditation Method in a single reading, crediting his two lifetimes for his strong memory 17.
  • Strength assessment: Considers himself effectively invincible among Soul Grandmasters after fighting Xiao Wu, while explicitly acknowledging that he cannot defeat Tang Hao directly 41.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Space Soul Tool → Space Ring → Void Ring — Purchased the original 0.1-cubic-meter storage tool for 25,000 Gold Soul Coins. Its first upgrade used a Ten-Year Hollow Wood Parasol Tree corpse and tenfold-forged void metal, expanding storage to one cubic meter and granting Space Mark. Later passages identify his tool as the Void Ring and confirm Space Jump and two available marks 9 10 17 41 48.
  • Daggers — Uses paired daggers to sever Blue Silver Grass stems; also lends Xiao Wu a dagger during their thousand-year plant hunt 15.
  • Da Ming’s scale — Keeps Soul Beasts away during travel through the Xiling Mountain Range 41.
  • Medicinal herbs and fruits — Upgrades herbs for sale, cultivation, and evolution materials. His hundred-year ganoderma earns 200,000 Gold Soul Coins 8 15 37.
  • Hundred-Thousand-Year Blue Silver Emperor Right Leg Bone — Taken from Ah Yin’s stone chamber and retained unabsorbed as leverage against Tang Hao 42 47.

Relationships

  • Xiao Wu — Companion and combat partner. He exposes her transformed Soul Beast identity, evolves her Soft Bone Rabbit Martial Soul into the Void Rabbit, and protects her from Tang Hao. Their friendship includes frequent teasing and struggles over who should be treated as the “boss” 13 18 23 28 40.
  • Da Ming — Initially distrusts him and threatens to kill him. Their relationship becomes a partnership: Da Ming supplies resources in exchange for Gu Chen’s promise to help him overcome Heavenly Tribulations and attain godhood 27 30.
  • Er Ming — Allied provider of Soul Beasts and upgrade materials; captures the targets Gu Chen needs for cultivation and ring absorption 30 34 37 38.
  • Chang Qing — Fortune and Longevity Fruit Tree whom Gu Chen upgrades to a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast and names. Pledges loyalty and receives a promise of future help toward godhood 36 37.
  • Director Su — Academy protector. Stops Yu Xiaogang from attacking Gu Chen and acts on Gu Chen and Xiao Wu’s report of the Dorm Seven assault 1 2 7.
  • Xiao Chenyu — Early academy supporter who offers protection after Gu Chen publicly rebukes Yu Xiaogang 2.
  • Old Jack — Looks after the orphaned Gu Chen in Holy Soul Village 32.
  • Tang San — Fellow villager turned enemy. Their dispute begins over Yu Xiaogang and escalates into death threats, combat, and Gu Chen’s prolonged whipping of him 4 5 43 44.
  • Yu Xiaogang — Antagonist whose insults begin the academy conflict. Gu Chen challenges his theories, helps report his assault, and later captures and whips him 1 7 45.
  • Tang Hao — Titled Douluo enemy who attempts to kill Gu Chen. Gu Chen escapes, recruits allies, and takes Ah Yin and her Soul Bone to lure him into an ambush 21 24 28 47.
  • Ah Yin — Former Blue Silver Emperor whom he removes from her hidden chamber and uses as leverage against Tang Hao 41 42 47.
