Power Progression
Cultivation
The opening chapters identify Xiao Yan as a Dou Di of the Dou Qi Continent. Later chapters describe his cultivation using Half-Emperor ranks on the Origin Martial Continent; the supplied passages do not explain this transition 1 16 58.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dou Di — Dou Qi Continent | 1 3 | Already the continent’s supreme expert at the opening. His internal cyclone contains a separate space for storing and refining energy. |
| Unspecified advancement | 13 | Replenishes his Dou Qi space after a recent advancement; the resulting rank is not stated. |
| Peak Two-Star Half-Emperor | 58 | Reaches this level within two months, astonishing the Third Hall Master. |
| Four-Star Half-Emperor — temporary enhancement | 95 | Awakens his dormant Dou Di Bloodline and Clan Mark. His presence continues rising beyond four stars during the enhancement. |
| Three-Star Half-Emperor | 148 155 | Confirmed cultivation rank; his techniques allow him to clash directly with a Six-Star Half-Emperor. |
| Peak Late Three-Star Half-Emperor | 189 190 | Refines externally obtained Dou Qi with Heavenly Flames and the Flame Mantra, then carefully compresses and reintegrates it. |
| Late Nine-Star Half-Emperor — temporary enhancement | 373 | Combines bloodline power with the Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations, but still fails to attain Dou Di strength. |
| Early Six-Star Half-Emperor | 532 | Confirmed during Zhao Xian’s ambush; the Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations temporarily raise him to the middle stage. |
| Late Six-Star Half-Emperor → peak of the stage | 765 | Heavenly Flame fusion releases energy that drives his cultivation upward. |
| Seven-Star Half-Emperor | 765 | Breaks through directly during the same fusion process. |
| Mid Nine-Star Half-Emperor | 765 | Reaches this stage after three months of continued advancement. |
| Peak Late Nine-Star Half-Emperor | 765 | Reaches the limit of Half-Emperor before breaking through again. |
| Dou Di — Origin Martial Continent | 765 | Crosses the Half-Emperor barrier as the Heavenly Flames finish fusing. |
| Peak Late Two-Star Dou Di | 767 | His cultivation stabilizes here after the fusion; his Spiritual Strength also improves substantially. |
| Mid Four-Star Dou Di | 769 | Advances through the Ultimate Transformation Pill and the absorption of surrounding energy. |
| Five-Star Dou Di | 880 | Opponents recognize that his Dou Qi reserves, control, and density exceed expectations for his rank. |
| Late Five-Star Dou Di | 901 | Retrospectively credited with killing a Late Eight-Star Dou Di and possessing combat strength comparable to a Quasi-Nine-Star Dou Di. |
| Early Six-Star Dou Di | 901 | The breakthrough improves his physique and cultivation enough to rival an ordinary Nine-Star Dou Di. |
| Yuan Zong | 1327 1350 | Confirmed during his reunion with Ouyang Miao and independently recognized by the Xiao Clan leader. |
Alchemy
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grandmaster alchemist — Dou Qi Continent | 6 | Remains below Emperor Grade because he cannot obtain a suitable formula. Nevertheless, no other grandmaster alchemist on the continent can match him. |
| Second-Tier Alchemist | 203 | Attains the rank within the month preceding the Alchemist Grand Meeting. |
| Second-Tier Alchemist — clarified assessment | 564 | Despite others identifying him as third-tier, the narration explicitly states that he is still second-tier. |
| Fourth-Tier Alchemist | 1040 | Identified retrospectively as the rank from which he advanced over the preceding years. |
| Fifth-Tier Alchemist | 1040 | His fused Heavenly Flame improves his ability to extract medicinal essence and remove impurities. |
| Seventh-Tier Alchemist | 1419 | Explicitly recognized during the conflict involving Xiao Huan and Xiao Jinghong. |
Background
Xiao Yan endured three years of humiliation as a supposed cultivation failure. That period taught him patience and restraint, laid the foundation for his cultivation, and preceded Yao Lao’s awakening. Nalan Yanran’s attempt to end their engagement led to Xiao Yan’s letter of repudiation, the Three-Year Agreement, and his conflict with the Misty Cloud Sect 1.
His subsequent rise included domination of the Black-Corner Region, the formation of the Flame Alliance in the Jia Ma Empire, and cooperation with Central Plains powers to establish the Heavenly Mansion Alliance. He eventually became a Dou Di, restored the Xiao Clan’s prominence, and saved the Dou Qi Continent 1.
Xiao Yan credits Xiao Zhan’s unwavering support and Yao Lao’s guidance for his achievements. His father’s capture by the Hun Clan remains one of his deepest regrets, although it also intensified his determination to become stronger 1.
Appearance
- Build: Slender and outwardly unassuming; his appearance conceals exceptional physical strength 155 379.
- Eyes: Dark or pitch-black, with brilliant flames appearing within them when he channels his power 1 203 536.
- Clothing: Frequently wears black robes 536 694 1379.
- Clan Mark: An ancient mark manifests between his brows and merges with his flame mark when he activates his Dou Di Bloodline 95.
- Combat manifestations: Can envelop himself in multicolored Heavenly Flames or form them into armor 58 359 723.
Personality
Xiao Yan’s defining traits are perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to endure pain for growth. Repeated oppression strengthens his motivation rather than breaking his resolve, and he subjects himself to punishing physical training to consolidate his cultivation 340 804.
He is deeply attached to his family, teacher, and close friends. Before leaving the Dou Qi Continent, he steadies his emotions to reassure his children and partners, then kneels and kowtows ten times to thank Xiao Zhan and Yao Lao. He considers Xiao Yi Xian one of the few friends he would protect with his life 1 1030.
His independence grows alongside his strength. Although he accepts help when necessary, he does not want permanent dependence on stronger allies and aspires to become someone others can rely upon 365.
Xiao Yan is wary of manipulation and refuses to submit merely because an opponent has power or status. He rejects Bai Ying’s attempt to claim his gratitude, resists threats from Bai Clan figures, and refuses demands that he surrender the Northern King to the Xiao Clan. However, genuine compassion can change his judgment: Xiao Jinghong’s willingness to save Xiao Huan moves him despite his growing disillusionment with the clan 584 1332 1417 1419.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Mantra
Xiao Yan’s cultivation method circulates absorbed energy through his meridians and works with his Heavenly Flames to purify and condense it 4 190 804.
- Fuses part of the Burning Flame Mantra into his existing method, improving the speed and smoothness of Dou Qi circulation and condensation 57.
- Supports the refinement and integration of externally acquired energy 190.
- Works with repeated physical tempering to stabilize his cultivation after rapid breakthroughs 804.
Heavenly Flames
Heavenly Flames are central to Xiao Yan’s offense, defense, cultivation, and alchemy. Flames he uses include Bone Spirit Cold Flame, Nihility Devouring Flame, Purifying Lotus Demon Flame, and Emperor Flame 77 78.
- Energy refinement: Purifies Dou Qi and assists in suppressing dangerous energy within his body 28 190 317.
- Defense: Forms flame armor and protective coverings; attacking weapons can acquire flames that erode their users’ protection 723 794.
- Domain of Flame: Engulfs Fang Xun’s Extreme Cold Domain and Wang Qi’s Lion Flame Domain 134.
- Freezing effect: Uses an eerie white flame to freeze the Ice Crystal Yan Shi Beast solid 134.
- Alchemy: A fused flame combining Bone Spirit Cold Flame and Sea Heart Flame greatly improves medicinal refinement 1040.
- Limit: Flame armor alone offers little protection against sufficiently powerful Dou Di opponents 723.
Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus
A destructive technique created by fusing Heavenly Flames. Xiao Yan uses his Soul Power to balance the flames and contain their conflicting forces 77 78.
- Fuses four powerful flames during an early desperate battle, using essence blood to stabilize the completed lotus 77 78.
- Later displays Dou Technique Spirit Manifestation, drawing out the power of a Human Class technique 175 176.
- Can continue developing as Xiao Yan and his flames grow stronger; higher future classifications are discussed as possibilities, not confirmed attainments 175.
- Limit: Powerful versions can exhaust his Dou Qi and leave him barely conscious. Even a five-flame fusion places an enormous burden on him on the Origin Martial Continent 78 176 177.
Buddha’s Fury Reincarnation and Destruction Fire Lotus
- Buddha’s Fury Reincarnation: Identified as a Human Class Dou Technique; breaks Mu Han’s weakened Vajra Shield and releases a massive black energy pillar 21 300.
- Destruction Fire Lotus: Described as Xiao Yan’s strongest self-created Dou Technique. He prepares it using six Heavenly Flames while attempting to expend dangerous accumulated power 674.
Ruler Techniques
Xiao Yan combines heavy-weapon strikes with Heavenly Flames and precise control of Dou Qi 104 300.
- Sevenfold Heaven-Breaking Ruler: Shatters Bai Ye’s broadsword through three successive strikes 570.
- Flame Splitting Tsunami: Later redirects this technique with the Power of the Great Dao to destroy enemy puppets 1202.
- Heavenly Flames Eternal Ruler: An ancient technique he had already used after becoming an emperor 177.
- Flame-formed ruler: Condenses Heavenly Flames into a giant ruler capable of releasing a three-hundred-foot arc of light 104.
Bloodline and Temporary Enhancements
- Dou Di Bloodline and Clan Mark: Awakens bloodline power dormant for ten years, rapidly restoring his depleted Dou Qi and increasing his presence 95.
- Heavenly Fire Three Mysterious Transformations: Temporarily raises his cultivation; at Early Six-Star Half-Emperor, it brings him to the middle stage 532.
- Combined enhancement: Bloodline power and the Three Mysterious Transformations together raise his presence to Late Nine-Star Half-Emperor, but cannot bridge the gap to Dou Di in that encounter 373.
- Destruction Fire Body: Helps him escape the compressed Heavy Spirit Domain. The Third Hall Master later immobilizes him again and forces the transformation to end 91.
Physical and Close-Combat Techniques
His physical strength substantially exceeds what his cultivation rank suggests. As a Three-Star Half-Emperor, he stops a One-Star Half-Emperor’s full-strength attack with two fingers 148.
- Eight Extremes Collapse: Plants hidden force inside Mu Han’s Vajra Formation, weakening it from within despite the recoil injuring Xiao Yan 300.
- Heart-Shattering Palm: Bypasses Xiao Yang’s rock armor to disrupt his body and shatter the armor 1434.
- Strength Elephant Art: Produces an enormous phantom and forces Lin Zehong back 699.
- Golden Elephant Art and Eight Extremes Blast: Used together to cripple an enemy puppet 1202.
- Condensed Fire Finger: Concentrates Dou Qi and Heavenly Flames at a fingertip for a focused lethal strike 89.
Great Dao of the Void
Xiao Yan uses the Great Dao of the Void to absorb and divert incoming attacks. Against Shui Miao, it neutralizes much of an assault by nine giant sea beasts 997.
- Conceals the outcome of the exchange behind an apparent defeat; the body pierced by Shui Miao subsequently disappears 997.
- Manifests his Great Dao in tangible form as a pitch-black steel needle, forcing Shui Miao to concede 997.
- Redirects his own ruler techniques to destroy three enemy puppets 1202.
Movement and Soul Techniques
- Heavenly Severing Steps: Used to evade Mu Han and Shui Miao; the Four Great Sects also seek to obtain it from him 300 363 997.
- Origin-Breaking Needles: Penetrate Fu Yulong’s Water and Sky as One Line and injure his palm 1107.
- Yellow Springs Heavenly Wrath: Strikes Zhao Ying during Xiao Yan’s victory over two Nine-Star Half-Emperors 493.
- Yellow Springs Palm: Used against Lin Zehong alongside the Strength Elephant Art 699.
- Emperor Seal Art: Knows and demonstrates its first five seals. He states that someone important gave him the art 1327.
- Great Heaven Creation Palm: Engulfs Zhao Ling and Zhao Ying before Xiao Yan withdraws it at an intervening expert’s request 493.
Alchemy and Soul Refinement
Xiao Yan combines Spiritual Strength, precise flame control, and medicinal knowledge 203 1040.
- Refines impurities from ingredients while preserving their medicinal essence 1040.
- Detects Mo Zhai’s probing soul power and damages it with Heavenly Flames 200.
- Purifies seven masses of Soul Origin over half a month and merges the essence with Xiao Xuan’s remnant soul 831.
- After reaching Peak Late Two-Star Dou Di, possesses Spiritual Strength described as outstanding even among Third-Tier Alchemists 767.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Departure to Revive Xiao Xuan
Xiao Yan discovers that Xiao Xuan’s Soul Origin survives and finds a possible means of reviving him beyond a milky-white vortex. Acknowledging that the journey may kill him, he bids farewell to his family, father, teacher, and allies before entering as the crowd salutes the Flame Emperor 1.
Early Origin Martial Continent Conflicts
On the Origin Martial Continent, Xiao Yan studies unfamiliar cultivation methods and technique classifications while refining his own methods. He integrates part of the Burning Flame Mantra, battles the Third Hall Master, and awakens his dormant Clan Mark 21 57 91 95.
Operating as Yan Xiao, he develops a reputation for defeating stronger opponents. He participates in the Alchemist Grand Meeting, protects Qin Zhong’s interests, and punishes the man responsible for injuring him 148 200 203.
Pursuit by the Four Great Sects
The masters of the Four Great Sects identify Yan Xiao as Xiao Yan and confront him in Lengcui City. Their pursuit includes demands for his Heavenly Severing Steps, while his strongest temporary enhancements remain insufficient to reach Dou Di 359 363 373.
He later entrusts Xiao Jin to the Ancient Void Dragon Clan, choosing the companion’s prospects for growth over their desire to remain together 400.
Yan City, Auctions, and Flame Fusion
Xiao Yan’s activities around Yan City bring him into contact with Jin Yao, Dong Chuan, and Fang Qian. Zhao Xian targets him for his possessions, while the search for the Fire Plume Flower leads him toward an auction in Xuan City despite the danger from hostile clans 531 533 691.
The fusion of Heavenly Flames drives his breakthrough from Late Six-Star Half-Emperor to Dou Di. Further cultivation brings him to Mid Four-Star Dou Di, and his return to Yan City reveals how greatly he has changed since his disappearance five years earlier 765 767 769 788.
Xiao Xuan’s Awakening and Xiao Gate
Xiao Yan purifies Soul Origin and merges it with Xiao Xuan’s remnant soul. By their later conversation, Xiao Xuan has awakened and learns about Xiao Yan’s experiences, including Xun'er’s capture by Ghost Hall 831 938.
Xiao Yan subsequently establishes Xiao Gate, accepting the Eastern and Western Hall Masters as subordinates while withholding complete trust. The faction is intended to support an offensive response to Ghost Fiend Gate and prepare for his eventual return to the Western Region 1039 1040.
Journey to the Central Region
After reuniting with Xiao Yi Xian, Xiao Yan becomes involved in conflicts surrounding Cai'er, Fu Yulong, Burning Flame Valley, and the Heavenly Puppet Sect. His battles demonstrate increasingly versatile use of the Great Dao and the Northern King 1030 1034 1107 1202 1226.
He then travels toward the Central Region’s Xiao Clan. Along the way, he reunites with Ouyang Miao and discovers connections between familiar techniques and the continent’s great clans 1277 1327 1330.
Acceptance, Departure, and Return to the Xiao Clan
The Xiao Clan formally invites Xiao Yan to join, but its internal hostility makes him reluctant. Xiao Xuan persuades him to accept, and Xiao Yan eventually confirms that he considers himself a clansman 1350 1358 1365.
Repeated disputes over resources, bloodline, and his possessions deepen his disillusionment. Although individual acts of compassion earn his respect, the conflict surrounding the Blood Stone test finally leads him to walk away 1401 1417 1419 1452.
After roughly two years away, he returns to a warmer reception from the younger generation and intense interest from the elders. The clan arranges another Clan Ritual for him and Xiao Yang, while his battle with Bai Zijing spreads his reputation beyond Xiao territory 1486 1488 1489 1490 1497.
Conflict with the Yao and Bai Clans
Xiao Yan’s encounters with Yao Shiling produce repeated setbacks for the Yao clansman. Later, Bai Hansheng attacks him with sound-based techniques while a Yao Clan elder takes Xiao Siyu hostage and demands Xiao Yan’s possessions and Heavenly Flames. The confrontation remains unresolved when an unknown voice condemns the two Yuan Zun for joining forces against him 1520 1559.
