History

Established Realm and Bibi Dong’s Recruitment

By the time Bibi Dong arrives after dying at Tang San’s hands, the Underworld is already a developed realm with an operating bureaucracy and a technologically advanced Fengdu City. Yue Guan, serving as White Impermanence, escorts her to Chen Yuan, who offers her the position of Meng Po. Upon accepting, she becomes an Underworld deity rather than resuming her former office as Spirit Hall’s pope 1.

The heavenly screen’s appearance threatens the organization’s secrecy. Ning Lingxiao proposes turning the exposure into an opportunity to emerge openly before Douluo Star, and Chen Yuan approves. At this point, the Underworld has already accumulated soldiers, ghost generals, and an increasingly complete divine-path system 2 4.

Public Revelation and Conflict with Tang San

The screen identifies Yue Guan as a Level 150 God King affiliated with the Underworld. Subsequent revelations show that his duties extend beyond guiding souls: he can destroy evil spirits and wield authority over life and death. These displays attract support from commoners while alarming the Divine Realm 4 7 8.

After receiving rewards that permit unrestricted travel to Douluo Star, Yue Guan returns to the mortal world. Tang San descends to test him, but Yue Guan follows Chen Yuan’s order to teach him a lesson and overwhelms him with nether power. Tang San escapes with assistance from the Shrek Seven Devils, forcing the Divine Realm’s God Kings to reassess the Underworld 9 10 13 15.

Spirit Hall’s Incorporation and Mortal Expansion

Recognizing that many of Spirit Hall’s former pillars now serve the Underworld, Qian Renxue decides that Spirit Hall should formally join it. Qian Daoliu presents the request to Chen Yuan, who accepts and welcomes Qian Renxue 18.

Chen Yuan subsequently orders Gui Mei to establish an outpost at Spirit City’s ruins. Black and White Impermanence publicly announce that the Underworld will rebuild in the mortal world, and the City of Wrongful Death is established on the former Spirit Hall site 24 25 34.

The Mortal Tribunal

Chen Yuan charges Zhong Tian with judging proven criminals impartially, regardless of their status or strength. Using the Good and Evil Reward and Punishment Token, Zhong Tian extends his authority across the City of Wrongful Death and the surrounding thousand li, exposing wrongdoing before the continent 34 36.

The tribunal’s revelations increase public support for the Underworld. Zhong Tian condemns guilty nobles and sends their souls into the Eighteen Levels of Hell. Tang San responds by seeking to recruit frightened noble factions, and Yu Xiaogang begins contacting them to build opposition 38 40 46.

Bibi Dong’s public identification as Meng Po further unsettles the Divine Realm. The revelation of her reincarnation authority demonstrates that the Underworld offers souls a destination and a renewed life, not merely punishment 42 45 46.

Authority and Functions

Soul Guidance and Spirit Suppression

White and Black Impermanence perform complementary duties in maintaining the boundary between the living and the dead 7 17.

  • White Impermanence receives souls judged virtuous and guides them to their appointed destinations 7.
  • Black Impermanence captures sinister spirits and escorts evil souls into the Underworld for punishment 18 20.
  • Ordinary ghost officials also escort souls and apprehend evil spirits 1.

Judgment and Punishment

The Underworld claims authority to judge wrongdoing without exemption for wealth, rank, or personal strength. Chen Yuan explicitly instructs Zhong Tian to act against proven criminals impartially 29 34.

  • The Good and Evil Reward and Punishment Token reveals wrongdoing and distinguishes souls through white light or black shrouds 36 38.
  • Its first mortal-world deployment covers a thousand-li radius around the City of Wrongful Death 36.
  • The Eighteen Levels of Hell enforce punishments through rules that condemned evil souls cannot resist 20.
  • Zhong Tian can use black chains to drag condemned souls into hell 40.
  • The Divine Realm’s God Kings recognize that this system is more than brute force; the Goddess of Life warns that even God Kings might struggle there if deprived of their divine power and positions 21.

Reincarnation

Meng Po administers the final stage of the Underworld’s reincarnation process. Her role connects judgment with the safe passage of souls into their next lives 44 45 46.

  • Meng Po Soup erases memories of a departed soul’s previous life and helps it relinquish past attachments 42 45.
  • Reincarnation power cleanses, adjusts, and protects souls at their origin 45.
  • Bibi Dong demonstrates the ability to repair a damaged soul’s origin before reincarnation 45 46.

Independent Divine Power

The Underworld’s divine system does not depend on the Divine Realm’s godhood inheritances. Chen Yuan directly creates Meng Po’s divine position, while the Divine Realm’s rulers recognize that the organization follows a separate path to power 1 18.

  • Its deities do not need to hunt Soul Beasts for Soul Rings, a distinction that interests Di Tian 13.
  • Yue Guan’s nether domain drains Tang San’s divine power, demonstrating its effectiveness against an established God King 15.
  • Gui Mei’s Soul Devouring talent draws power from suppressed evil souls 23.
  • Zhong Tian’s Taotie ability likewise allows him to grow stronger by devouring evil souls 27.

Equipment and Divine Implements

  • Mourning Staff — Yue Guan’s weapon for suppressing or destroying evil souls; also used to strike Tang San during their battle 8 15.
  • Soul-Summoning Banner — Gui Mei’s implement for capturing evil spirits and opening the way to hell. Suppressed souls can also strengthen him in combat 20 24.
  • Good and Evil Reward and Punishment Token — Zhong Tian’s instrument for exposing crimes and administering judgment across a large area 34 36 38.
  • Meng Po Soup — Bibi Dong’s preparation for removing past-life memories before reincarnation 42 45.

Relationships

  • Spirit Hall — Incorporated into the Underworld rather than simply restored as an independent power. Its former leaders and elders provide a foundation for the organization’s mortal expansion 18 24 26.
  • Tang San and the Shrek Seven Devils — Principal opponents. Yue Guan defeats Tang San, while subsequent revelations of judgment and reincarnation intensify their fear of the organization 15 23 44.
  • Divine Realm — A rival authority whose influence on Douluo Star is challenged by the Underworld’s independent divine system and mortal tribunals. Its God Kings consider investigation, testing, negotiation, and possible cooperation against the threat 18 21 27 38.
  • Commoners and lower-ranking Soul Masters — Increasingly supportive because the Underworld suppresses harmful spirits and judges oppressive nobles 17 26 40 43.
  • Noble factions — Those threatened by the tribunal conceal evidence, seek allies, and become targets for Tang San’s recruitment efforts 33 40 46.
  • Di Tian and the Soul Beast Clan — Potential allies only. Di Tian considers an alliance after observing that the Underworld’s power does not require hunting Soul Beasts 13.
