Background / History
Noble Background and Classroom Incident
Wig belonged to the Brown Family, a noble lineage whose Normal State Bloodline was associated with the human soul. Although sidelined within the family, he retained access to its protection and resources 20 21.
While teaching at Black Pine City Forest Magic Academy, Wig discovered a dangerous artifact brought to school by the Pine Nut Chamber of Commerce president’s son. According to the artifact, the student had secretly taken it from home to show off, and Wig sought to seize it after discovering it feeding on students. Their confrontation killed eleven children, including the president’s only son 21.
Miuan Brown, Wig’s cousin and the family’s provincial patriarch, came to resolve the incident. Family intervention suppressed the scandal, while Black Pine City Hall restricted the chamber’s retaliation 21 42. On the fourth day after acquiring the artifact, Wig offered it to a Brown Family Magister specializing in mind and soul. The Magister instead allowed him to retain it temporarily 29.
Replacing Kaiming
Wig prepared to steal his student Kaiming’s life for one or two years. The process required Sealed Artifact 3-0771 to record the target’s fate in advance; it could not simply replace an arbitrary person on demand 28.
Kaiming knew about some of his teacher’s wrongdoing but believed their teacher–student bond could preserve Wig’s conscience. That trust failed: Wig killed him, devoured his mind, and assumed his body and fate 19 30.
To erase his original identity, Wig arranged his own funeral. He ordered the artifact to substitute an innocent beggar’s fate with his own, then killed the beggar to produce a false corpse. Under Kaiming’s identity, he intended to conduct the funeral and continue living through his student’s clinic 14 30.
The replacement also positioned Wig to obtain a public appointment that Fry had promised Kaiming. Yize’s later investigation linked that appointment to a Brown Family scheme using focus potions to influence fifteen Education Bureau employees 30. Whether Wig killed Kaiming on direct family orders or acted independently to exploit the family’s plans remained unresolved 29.
Exposure and Loss of the Artifact
Xie Yu recognized that the man presenting himself as Kaiming was actually Wig. Rather than immediately accuse him, Xie Yu publicly claimed that Wig had left him the sealed artifact in recognition of his talent. Unable to produce a convincing rebuttal without jeopardizing his disguise, Wig reluctantly handed it over 14 15.
Wig had initially regarded Xie Yu as a convenient assistant and considered letting him live a few more days. After their confrontation, he privately viewed the young man as a demon whose behavior he could not predict 15.
The artifact quickly agreed to help Xie Yu avenge Kaiming. Meanwhile, Roman Brown confronted Wig at the clinic and demanded its return to the family, allowing him only until the following day 18 19 28.
Death
Xie Yu sent Sealed Artifact 3-0771 to kill Wig before the family could reclaim it. The artifact used a recording of Kaiming’s already-dead fate, substituting that fate onto Wig 29.
White flames erupted around Wig—the same means he had used to erase Kaiming. He had neither the remaining life nor the strength to resist, and none of his magic could save him. The artifact subsequently devoured his fate and soul 29 43.
Afterward, Xie Yu disclosed the identity theft to Yize and Fry. With Wig dead, he could no longer destroy evidence or contest their account, and the false corpse could be examined for the imperfections in its fate substitution 30.
Posthumous Misidentification
The Brown Family initially suspected the Pine Nut Chamber of Commerce of involvement in Wig’s disappearance and the loss of the artifact 36 41.
Miuan and Bai Luo later developed an incorrect theory that Wig had faked his death twice and escaped with Sealed Artifact 3-0771. They misread the evidence at Kaiming’s clinic as the destruction of a puppet rather than Wig’s actual death 44.
After Xie Yu’s interview exposed the affair publicly, Miuan went further: he claimed that Wig had replaced Xie Yu and betrayed the family to the Education Bureau. This was another false deduction, not a survival or identity change by Wig 48.
Appearance
Wig’s original body was elderly, stooped, and frail; after replacing Kaiming, he possessed a sturdy build 15.
- Hair: White; Roman Brown’s silvery-white hair is explicitly compared with his 28.
- Clothing: Appears as a black-robed old man in the artifact’s reconstruction of his past 43.
- Pendant: Wore Sealed Artifact 3-0771 around his neck while impersonating Kaiming 14.
Personality
Wig was calculating and willing to murder others to prolong his life. His preparations included recording Kaiming’s fate over an extended period, arranging his own funeral, and killing an uninvolved beggar to supply a convincing corpse 28 30.
His treatment of Kaiming showed little attachment to their teacher–student relationship. He had not particularly liked his student and exploited the trust Kaiming placed in him 15 19.
Despite his magical strength, Wig struggled when Xie Yu disrupted his plans. He alternated between disbelief, suppressed anger, and reluctant cooperation, ultimately surrendering his artifact while forcing himself to smile 15. Miuan later characterized him as possessing some cunning and ambition, but little more—a judgment that did not prevent Miuan from badly misreading his death 48.
Abilities & Skills
Mind and Soul Magic
Wig was a Four-Star Mage whose magic operated in the mental and spiritual domains 19 42.
- Mental devouring: Devoured Kaiming’s mind during the takeover of his identity 30.
- Spiritual combat: His struggle over Sealed Artifact 3-0771 caused a classroom disaster fatal to ordinary students 21.
- Limit: His own magic could not counter the artifact when it imposed Kaiming’s dead fate upon him 29.
Pure White
Pure White is a spell within the Brown Family’s magic system, identifiable through traces of soul scorching and spirit devouring 36.
- Destruction: Wig used white flames to erase Kaiming; the artifact later reproduced that death upon Wig 29.
- Memory erasure: Xie Yu’s memory gaps were linked to the same white-flame magic 42 43.
- Bloodline association: Xie Yu identified the flame in his public account as Brown Family bloodline magic 43.
Artifact-Assisted Fate Substitution
Wig’s identity replacement depended on Sealed Artifact 3-0771, not solely on his personal spellcasting 28 30.
- Identity theft: Replaced Kaiming’s fate and body, allowing Wig to occupy his position in society 30.
- False corpse: Used an innocent beggar to manufacture evidence of his own death 30.
- Preparation requirement: A target’s fate had to be recorded beforehand, requiring lengthy preparation in Kaiming’s case 28.
- Forensic weakness: Examination of a substituted corpse’s bones and brain could reveal the disguise 30.
- Unreliable control: The artifact stated that Wig could only barely use it and did not regard him as a serious threat 19 29.
Equipment / Items
- Sealed Artifact 3-0771 — Fate-Substitution Talisman Doll: A Tier 3 artifact worn as a pendant. Wig addressed it deferentially as “Lord Fate-Substitution Talisman Doll” and relied on it to begin a new life. After he surrendered it to Xie Yu, it turned against him and became the instrument of his death 14 15 18 19 29.
Relationships
- Kaiming — Former student and eventual victim. Kaiming trusted their bond; Wig killed him and appropriated his body, fate, and livelihood 19 30.
- Xie Yu — Kaiming’s assistant and Wig’s opponent. Exposed his disguise, obtained his artifact, and arranged his death to avenge Kaiming 14 15 29.
- Sealed Artifact 3-0771 — Formerly used by Wig for fate substitution. It abandoned him for Xie Yu and ultimately consumed his fate and soul 18 29 43.
- Miuan Brown — Cousin and Brown Family provincial patriarch. Protected Wig after the classroom disaster, then incorrectly concluded that he had survived and betrayed the family 42 44 48.
- Roman Brown — Family representative who addressed him as “Uncle Wig.” Demanded the artifact’s return and reminded him of his debt to the family 28.
- Pine Nut Chamber of Commerce — Antagonistic party whose president lost his only son in Wig’s classroom incident. Its dispute with the Browns later complicated the investigation into Wig’s death 21 36 41.
