His usual approach is cautious and administrative: contain disputes, keep dangerous factions apart, and avoid unnecessary complications. Xie Yu describes him as someone who prefers resolving trouble rather than creating it. Nevertheless, Yize protects Xie Yu’s interests, tolerates his questions, and gradually accepts a more confrontational response to the Brown Family 22 38 39.

Yize enrolled at Black Pine City Forest Magic Academy in 1718, alongside Kaiming and Fry. Fry remembers him frequently skipping classes, appearing when courses ended, and effortlessly taking first place. Yize dismisses most of those elementary courses as simple 18 21.

Wig Brown taught him subjects involving the mind and soul, although Yize later barely remembers attending his classes 21.

Finding and Protecting Xie Yu

After Xie Yu’s perfect examination score attracts official attention, Yize personally visits his family in Pinecone Town. Town staff explain the risks to his parents, who temporarily relocate to a cousin’s home. Divination subsequently confirms that Xie Yu is with Kaiming 11 16.

At their first meeting, Yize warns Xie Yu that powerful people will resent his existence. He also explains that Fry’s connections to certain academies influence his desire to keep Xie Yu in Northern Plains Province 17.

Reviewing the Perfect Score

Yize finds no evidence of cheating, but cannot satisfactorily explain how an unfinished magic array became complete after Xie Yu submitted his paper. The proctor confirms that Xie Yu brought no spiritual ink and left the array unfinished; the graders nevertheless received a completed answer 24.

He keeps this anomaly out of the public report while privately notifying his superior. After the Bureau formally upholds the score and authorizes extensive educational support, Yize proceeds on the basis that Xie Yu is a genuine genius 24.

His concern extends beyond one candidate. The examination’s questions and marking favor Southwest Gorge Province, which produces ninety-five perfect-score candidates against Northern Plains Province’s one. Yize also identifies unusually strong results among nobles in the capital, despite the official investigation finding no cheating or leaked questions 25 34.

Discovering Wig Brown’s Scheme

Yize initially accepts the report that Wig Brown died naturally. He discovers Sealed Artifact 3-0771 only after noticing changes in the concealment surrounding Xie Yu and seeing the artifact return to him 21 29.

Xie Yu then reveals that Wig stole Kaiming’s identity and that he ordered the artifact to kill Wig. During the resulting investigation, Yize uncovers the Browns’ attempt to use focus potions and public appointments to infiltrate the Education Bureau. He warns Fry that accepting the potion would have implicated him in bribery and facilitated Wig’s appointment 30.

Yize thanks Xie Yu for exposing the danger, then leaves with Fry to verify the evidence at the academy and Kaiming’s clinic. Xie Yu’s demonstrated command of sealed artifacts also eases his doubts about the perfect score 30.

Supporting the Campaign Against the Browns

Yize arranges the temporary transfer of the Chapter of Teleportation to Xie Yu. Besides providing protection, the artifact offers a way for Xie Yu to demonstrate genuine talent in sealed-artifact handling 33 34.

He initially tries to contain the Browns’ inheritance dispute by arranging Wig’s funeral and delaying news reaching the Pine Nut Chamber of Commerce. When Xie Yu proposes using an interview to connect the Browns’ crimes with the wider examination controversy, Yize recognizes both the opportunity and the danger 38 39.

Although he refuses to endorse the plan in principle, he agrees not to obstruct it. He submits reports concerning the Browns, requests further sealed-artifact transfers, and applies successfully for special protection for Xie Yu. During the interview, he further protects Xie Yu by specifying that the account is not legal testimony 39 43.

The Ilia Connection and Continuing Investigation

Yize confirms that Miuan Brown has arrived with someone bearing the Ilia surname. He explains the family’s interests in insurance, minting, and the trade in knowledge and memories, while warning that its influence makes opposition difficult 45.

After Xie Yu argues that retreat would expose the Bureau to retaliation, Yize vows to remove the Browns’ identified influence throughout the province. He moves his work into the king suite and accelerates the internal review 46 49.

While working there, he recognizes pressure suggesting observation by a much stronger being. He accepts Xie Yu’s proposal to investigate Kaiming’s wooden clinic, both as a useful lead and as an opportunity to leave the increasingly unsafe suite 49.
