Background / History

Destruction of the Dongfang Lineage

Before her family’s destruction, Dongfang Bai wished to marry an outstanding man, bear nine sons and nine daughters, and devote herself to family life. The massacre of her parents and siblings transformed her temperament and made revenge her overriding purpose 17.

Three years before Wang Hao’s arrival, the man whose body he later inhabits infiltrated the Dongfang household, poisoned its water, and helped assassins slaughter the lineage. Dongfang Bai had noticed him approaching the well but failed to investigate, a decision that later intensified her hatred of him 5 258.

After learning martial arts under Dugu Qiubai, she attacked the assassins’ stronghold and killed its members, including Wang Hao’s predecessor. Seeing that her enemy had apparently survived caused her internal power to run wild, worsening her existing injuries. Wang Hao cured her wounds and poison with a Great Rejuvenation Pill, but Dugu Qiubai claimed credit for the rescue 5 7 8.

Investigation in the Capital

Dongfang Bai entered the Sun Moon Holy Cult and rose to Right Envoy of Light. In the capital, she posed as Liu Rushi, supposedly the greatest beauty of Chuanshu, and used the Listening to Rain Pavilion to gather information. The distant birthplace made her invented background difficult to verify 10 49.

She attempted to control Wang Hao with Soul-Bewitching Zither Music, unaware that his True Spirit Sword Intent allowed him to resist. Her investigation ultimately led her to conclude that Emperor Mingde had ordered the Eastern Depot and Brocade Guard to destroy her lineage, with the Blood Robe Tower serving as a cover 49 137.

During these meetings, she disclosed three ambitions: mastering every divine art, becoming the strongest martial artist and alliance leader, and returning to the past to kill the man whose actions had enabled the massacre. These wishes became side quests for Wang Hao 58.

Wang Hao’s Gifts and Disguises

Wang Hao repeatedly sent her martial arts manuals while courting her under the identity Zhu Yanzu. His first major shipment contained dozens of arts, including two Xiantian Grandmaster-level techniques. Recognizing his handwriting, Dongfang Bai began to suspect that he had known her identity and resisted her hypnosis from the beginning 86.

Despite her growing affection, she regarded Zhu Yanzu’s supposed imperial ancestry as an obstacle: the Great Ming imperial family was responsible for her household’s destruction. At their roadside reunion, she nevertheless gave him an early draft of the Dragon Divine Art to repay part of his generosity 137.

Wang Hao later appeared as Ximen Chuixue, promoted her reputation through a public duel, and fabricated a connection between her constitution and the Ancient Sun Emperor. His Solar Shaping Method, combined with intervention from the world’s consciousness, enabled her initial transformation into a Solar Physique 316 319 320 341.

Taking the Sun Moon Holy Cult

Dongfang Bai eventually confronted Wang Hao in his undisguised identity. Her newly developed Aurora Sword Qi could threaten his defenses, but he tricked her into looking away and knocked her unconscious. The subsequent dual cultivation took place while she remained unconscious; she awoke furious with him 377 378 379.

After Wang Hao implanted a Demon Seed and departed, Ren Woxing arrived with more than a hundred cult experts to kill her. Using the Seed to stabilize her Aurora Sword Qi, she killed ten Early Innate experts, cut through Ren Woxing’s Star-Absorbing Demon Hand, and killed him. The survivors surrendered when she proclaimed herself cult leader 379.

Her affection for Zhu Yanzu continued to deepen. After receiving further inheritances and instruction in developing the Demon Seed, she took the initiative to kiss him. Even so, when Wang Hao later tested whether love could outweigh her family feud, she still chose vengeance 389 430.

The Stolen Heart

News of Zhu Yanzu’s supposed sacrificial death devastated Dongfang Bai. Ren Yingying exploited her grief through a long-prepared scheme, obtaining her physical heart and draining most of her Celestial Person Realm cultivation 435.

Wang Hao saved her by transplanting his own heart, which contained ten sealed Bloodline Divine Abilities. Rather than reveal his identities, he continued manipulating her hatred, claiming that Zhu Yanzu had made another costly bargain to save her 437 446.

At Mount Hua, Linghu Chong stabbed her through the heart during the battle against Wang Hao. Dongfang Bai subsequently revealed that she had anticipated Ren Yingying’s plans and waited for her to act. She took up the Benevolence Sword, reclaimed cultivation from Ren Yingying, and killed her by turning the devoured power into a Demon Seed 444.

World Advancement and the Truth

Despite gaining space-rending Sword Qi and becoming the World Protagonist, Dongfang Bai remained trapped at Celestial Person Realm Peak by a heart demon born from hatred. Wang Hao’s apparent death removed that obstruction, allowing her to enter the Shattering Realm and initiate the world’s advancement 445.

The Will of Heaven and Earth took refuge inside her when the Heavenly Mandate awakened. With its assistance, she met the Heavenly Mandate’s World-Destroying Thunder using the Benevolence Sword, surviving the strike but suffering grave injuries 445.

After learning that Wang Hao was also Zhu Yanzu, she struggled to reconcile her love and hatred. His later apparent attempt to erase his past self made her recognize that his actions had been directed toward fulfilling her three wishes. Before departing, he placed his Sword Intent in the younger Dongfang Bai’s zither as a substitute for personally remaining with her throughout her life 446 448 451.

Xiao Mengmeng Copy Number One then gave her Wang Hao’s memories, exposing the extent of his deception—including the final performance that had moved her. Much later, Dongfang Bai joined the other women in confronting him over his lies, agreeing to postpone their reckoning until Hongjun was defeated 452 1307.

Personality

Dongfang Bai’s gentleness is largely buried beneath the ruthless, domineering persona she develops after the massacre. Granny Song fears that her commitment to hatred will eventually destroy her. Around the elderly woman, however, she drops Dongfang Bubai’s imposing manner and shows affection, embarrassment, and a desire for companionship 17 86.

Her ambition is matched by extraordinary persistence. She spends much of her time secluded in cultivation and continues attempting the Solar Shaping Method through repeated catastrophic failures. She understands the risks of revenge and can suppress her hostility until she believes she has sufficient strength to act 316 319 341.

She is perceptive without being indiscriminately intrusive. When Wang Hao and Dugu Qiubai manufacture an excuse to send her away, she recognizes their deception but chooses to respect their privacy. Against enemies, that restraint can become calculated ruthlessness, as shown by her decision to let Ren Yingying’s scheme unfold before turning it against her 255 444.

Her attachment to Zhu Yanzu creates a prolonged conflict between love and vengeance. She repeatedly denies herself a relationship because of her feud, yet his reported death leaves her emotionally devastated. Her hatred eventually becomes a literal barrier to cultivation 137 341 430 435 445.
