Background / History
Firefly was created as a member of the Glamoth Iron Cavalry, a genetically modified force deployed against Propagation. Although she initially describes Glamoth as an empire ruled by an empress, she later explains that this account was part of the Iron Cavalry’s indoctrination. Glamoth was a republic, and the empress intended to use the cavalry as her private military force to seize power 3 37.
After the empress’s plan was exposed, the Iron Cavalry was sent to kill an Emanator of Propagation—a mission Firefly describes as effectively suicidal. The force was wiped out, and she drifted through space until Kafka recovered her and brought her into the Stellaron Hunters. Firefly initially believed herself to be the only known survivor; the circumstances of Glamoth’s destruction remained uncertain 3 37.
During her military service, Firefly befriended AR-214, a soldier who openly challenged regulations and insisted on expressing her individuality. Their friendship began after a battle that left only four cavalry members alive. Although deployments frequently separated them, they became close friends before AR-214 deserted and eventually reached Penacony 55.
Appearance
Firefly has fair skin and eyes repeatedly described as holding stars 3 4 47.
- Civilian clothing: Appears in a light green short dress early in the story and a black-and-green dress during the Luofu events 4 11 102.
- Hairstyle: Later wears a ponytail tied by Hanxing, which she proudly shows to her companions 95.
- Entropy loss markings: Before her reconstruction, luminous green cracks spread across her face and eyes. During her Stellaron-powered sacrifice, the markings turn purple 71 72 77.
Personality
Firefly values the right to choose her own life rather than remain a weapon defined by Glamoth or fate. Despite longing for peace, she rejects Sunday’s eternal paradise because it would deny people the opportunity to confront suffering and make their own decisions. She similarly defends AR-214’s intervention against the Swarm as an act of conscience, not merely the fulfillment of a soldier’s destiny 45 66.
Her consideration for others is practical as well as emotional. She offers Robin safeguards before asking her to entrust a memory to Dahlia, gives the Astral Express crew privacy when she recognizes their lingering distrust, and cautions Hanxing against judging people by appearances 45 51 85.
With Hanxing, Firefly becomes openly affectionate and increasingly mischievous. She later admits that her apparent drunkenness on Fansha Star was an act. Her playful behavior contrasts sharply with her ruthlessness toward anyone threatening him: after finding him nearly dead, she exterminates his Borisin attackers before holding him and pleading for him to wake 94 103 108.
Abilities & Skills
Sam — Strategic Assault Armor
Sam is the Glamoth Republic’s Firefly Type IV Strategic Assault Armor, serving as both Firefly’s combat weapon and, originally, her medical pod 3 55.
- Armored protection: Ordinary gunfire fails to damage it during the confrontation with the Kangbu Revolutionary Army 24.
- Powered flight: Its thrusters allow rapid travel and let Firefly carry Hanxing through the air 23 28 106.
- Target identification: The HUD distinguishes allies from enemies, marks targets, and scans the surrounding area 95 103 108.
- Combat identity: While armored, she uses a cold male voice and asks Hanxing to address her by the codename “Sam” 24.
- Limits: Sam is not invulnerable; Basha pierces the armor and strikes Firefly’s heart 32.
Complete Combustion State
Complete Combustion State is associated with Firefly’s Destruction awakening and is visibly marked by green flames and light 55 71 103.
- Flame attacks: Burns enemies to ash and supports large-scale scorched-earth operations 29 95 103.
- Twin lightswords: Enables close-range attacks against the Propagation mech and groups of Borisin 71 95 103.
- High-speed movement: In this state, Sam crosses the sky as a green meteor and moves too quickly for nearby observers to identify clearly 102 103.
- Demonstrated strength: Firefly overpowers the Propagation mech in a direct clash and pins it to a pillar with her remaining lightsword 71.
Swordsmanship and Coordinated Combat
Firefly fights with blades both alongside Hanxing and while acting independently 112 114.
- Holds a lightsaber to a captured Vidyadhara suspect’s neck during an interrogation 112.
- Kills a Borisin attacking Hanxing from his blind spot 114.
- Coordinates front-and-rear coverage with Hanxing, combining their blade attacks against surrounding enemies 24 114.
Glamoth Physiology and Entropy Loss Syndrome
Her original body was genetically optimized for warfare. Firefly explains that the Iron Cavalry’s modifications sacrificed many ordinary instincts and greatly reduced their need for rest 28 37.
- Engineered illness: She initially describes Entropy Loss Syndrome as a failsafe designed to make uncontrollable cavalry members self-destruct 3.
- Symptoms: Causes chronic physical disintegration, slowing the sufferer and gradually blurring their boundary with the world 3.
- Temporary management: Sam and surviving Glamoth medicines could delay its onset, but neither provided a lasting cure 3.
- Unconfirmed explanation: Firefly mentions rumors linking the syndrome to Propagation and a need to find a “collective”; she does not present these rumors as established fact 55.
- After reconstruction: Her new body can sleep and dream normally, removing the former necessity of living as a combat weapon 78.
Investigation and Path Knowledge
Firefly contributes knowledge of Penacony’s hidden dreamscape and recognizes suspicious behavior during investigations 43 53.
- Explains that Dormancy transports abducted dreamers to Dreamflux Reef rather than simply killing them 43 50.
- Helps persuade Robin to investigate the Dream Master and the Family’s concealed history 43 45.
- Detects an unusual aura around Sunday and asks Hanxing to examine his Path energies 53.
- Explains how different Paths emphasize mental, physical, conceptual, or temporal abilities 115.
Equipment / Items
- Transformation device — Summons Sam amid flames. It becomes temporarily inaccessible after her reconstruction, then returns during the Borisin crisis 67 78 95.
- Twin lightswords — Sam’s close-combat weapons, used against the Propagation mech and Borisin 71 95 103.
- Star-shaped necklace — Linked to Hanxing’s firefly pendant; warns her when he is in danger. Hanxing also charges it with twenty-four hours of Emanator-level Harmony Tuning to conceal her from ordinary observers 95 102.
Relationships
- Hanxing — Husband and combat partner. Their mutual confession develops into marriage, and he reconstructs her body after her fatal disintegration 11 76 78.
- Kafka — Rescuer and maternal figure. Kafka brought her into the Stellaron Hunters and searched for Glamoth medicine while following Elio’s script 3.
- Silver Wolf — Friend, gaming companion, and frequent source of teasing. Helps locate Firefly in the dreamscape and organizes wedding arrangements 2 11 42 73.
- AR-214 / Jintiao — Close friend from the Iron Cavalry. Firefly helps restore her to life and encourages her to abandon her military designation and choose a personal name 55 74.
- Elio — Provides the scripts guiding her Stellaron Hunter missions. Predicts that she will experience three “deaths” in Penacony 1 43 67.
- Caelus and the Astral Express crew — Initially targets of the Hunters’ efforts to draw them into the pursuit of the grand legacy; later allies and traveling companions 38 50 79 83.
- Yan Bai — Ally on Fansha Star who lends the couple money and fights alongside them. Later accompanies their Penacony activities 27 30 60.
- Robin — Investigative ally who promises to ensure AR-214’s sacrifice is remembered 43 45.
- Dahlia / Constance — Apparent collaborator whose claim to be a Stellaron Hunter companion is exposed as deception. Banishes Firefly into the Memory Zone 46 47 55.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Meeting Hanxing
Firefly welcomes Hanxing into the Stellaron Hunters and watches over him after a nightmare. During his training with Blade, she asks Kafka to intervene before he can be killed 1 2.
After learning about Entropy Loss Syndrome, Hanxing treats her with Star Eyes. Her symptoms disappear, but the exertion makes his eyes bleed and leaves him unconscious in her arms. The treatment allows her to remain outside Sam; their growing affection becomes explicit when they exchange an inadvertent confession over cakes 3 4 11.
Fansha Star
An attempted mission to retrieve a Stellaron on Edo Star instead strands Firefly and Hanxing on Fansha Star. With Hanxing unable to reopen a portal, she uses Sam to transport him to Wind Erosion Town 23.
The pair become involved with the Kangbu Revolutionary Army and agree to help Yan Bai break the curse preventing the planet’s inhabitants from leaving. Firefly leads attacks in Sam, including scorched-earth operations at Night Return Port. During the campaign, she kisses Hanxing and tells him she loves him 24 29 30.
Basha leaves her gravely wounded and later pierces Sam through the heart. By the aftermath, she is again beside Hanxing as they confront the loss of Fansha Star’s population and discuss rebuilding its dead within the universe contained in the Blade of Ending. Before returning to the Hunters, she agrees to conceal his recovered memories 32 34 35.
Penacony Investigation
Firefly and Hanxing work to fulfill Elio’s instruction to involve the Astral Express in the pursuit of the grand legacy. Her apparent death at Dormancy’s hands leads Hanxing to Dreamflux Reef, where they reunite and investigate the deeper dreamscape 38 42 43.
As Sam, she clashes with Acheron before urging her to investigate the Family. Firefly then brings Robin into the investigation and witnesses a memory showing the Dream Master’s betrayal and murder of AR-214. Dahlia’s subsequent deception leaves Firefly stranded in a Memory Zone until Hanxing finds her 43 45 46 47.
The couple eventually reveal their identities to Caelus and join forces with the Astral Express. Firefly later challenges Sunday’s proposed paradise, arguing that enforced happiness would deprive people of their right to choose and overcome reality’s trials 50 66.
Three “Deaths”
Elio’s script predicts three “deaths” for Firefly in the land of dreams 67.
| Death | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| First | Dormancy pierces her with its wing blade; her body dissolves into Memoria in Hanxing’s arms 42. | She reaches Dreamflux Reef. Hanxing confirms that she remains alive and locates her through Silver Wolf’s tracker 42 43. |
| Second | After defeating the Propagation mech, she drives its Stellaron into her chest and flies upward, drawing the Swarm after her 71. | Opens the route for the decisive battle. Hanxing catches her lifeless dream-body; after Ena’s Dream ends, she is awake but showing renewed entropy loss 71 72. |
| Third | The syndrome spreads through both dream and reality, becoming irreversible. She loses her senses and disintegrates after asking Hanxing not to leave her alone 77. | Hanxing uses Netherworld as she vanishes, then later creates a replacement body and guides her soul into it 77 78. |
Wedding and New Life
After awakening from Ena’s Dream, Firefly asks to see fireworks and to marry Hanxing. Wanting AR-214 present, she helps locate her friend’s remains and retrieve the Propagation mech needed for Hanxing’s reconstruction. Once revived, AR-214 chooses the name Jintiao at Firefly’s encouragement 72 73 74.
Firefly and Hanxing marry at the stern before their friends, the Stellaron Hunters, and the Astral Express crew. Fireworks accompany their kiss, fulfilling both of her wishes. Her worsening illness is concealed from the guests through Hanxing’s Tuning 76.
Following her final disintegration, Hanxing restores her in an ordinary body. He tells her that she is no longer a weapon of war, but Firefly. She chooses to move forward rather than dwell on Glamoth, although she initially cannot summon Sam 77 78.
Xianzhou Luofu and the Borisin Crisis
Firefly accompanies the Astral Express representatives to the Luminary Wardance and is introduced to Jing Yuan as a new Express member. She and Hanxing become suspicious of the disguised Cloud Knight Lujun before the wider Borisin plot unfolds 79 82 83.
After regaining Sam, she rescues March 7th, Yanqing, and Yunli from Borisin attackers. Her necklace later warns her that Hanxing is in danger, prompting her to leave the group and race to the Prison of Deep Seclusion in Complete Combustion State. She catches him as he collapses and kills the surrounding attackers 95 102 103.
Once Hanxing recovers, the pair resume tracking the conspiracy. Firefly assists in interrogating a suspicious Vidyadhara and continues fighting beside Hanxing against Borisin ambushes 104 109 112 114.
Notable Quotes
“Now, I'm just Firefly.” 37
“In my view, people making choices for themselves is only natural, and a right they are born with.” 66
“As long as I can keep burning, wherever I am will be ‘flame,’ not ‘ashes.’” 70
Trivia
- Firefly’s enthusiasm for Oak Cake Rolls fades after her initial cure. She connects the change to recovering a normal sense of taste and finds Penacony’s dreamscape drinks more appealing 11 37.
- She can hold considerably more liquor than Hanxing initially assumes; she later reveals that she pretended to be drunk on Fansha Star 27 94.
- Sparkle’s dolls assign her the temporary agent names “Mecha Tycoon” and “Super Firepower Instant-Kill Star Strider,” much to her confusion 55.
