Background / History
Childhood and Family
Sheng Ke became Zou Yan’s neighbor as a child. After his parents separated, they left him with a relative who accepted money for his care but frequently stayed out at bars and KTVs. At eight or nine, Sheng Ke began buying groceries and cooking for himself rather than living entirely on the frozen meals and instant noodles provided for him. When Zou Yan and his mother discovered how he was living, she brought him into their household and helped raise him 40.
His mother moved to the United Kingdom for work, remarried, and had twin daughters. From middle school onward, Sheng Ke visited her, his stepfather, and his younger sisters in London during summer and winter vacations, often bringing Zou Yan. His mother later divorced again and raised the twins, sending them to boarding school in Switzerland while continuing to support Sheng Ke 21.
Films were his principal interest from childhood. Zou Yan’s father was a producer, giving him access to more movies after their families became neighbors. While his teenage peers dated, Sheng Ke preferred staying in his study watching films 47.
Directing Career
Sheng Ke achieved international recognition at twenty-two with his first feature, Yesterday Hung High. Two years later, Madam Huanqing won across the three major Chinese film awards. By twenty-eight, his films were known for combining critical acclaim, accessibility, and substantial domestic and overseas box-office earnings 1.
His appearance also attracted fans. A luxury brand commissioned him to make a short perfume commercial; the finished work impressed its artistic director and led to friendships with senior executives 15.
He has powerful backing and considerable creative freedom. Despite a relatively small filmography, his record of award-winning performances makes leading roles in his productions highly sought after 38.

Appearance
- Build: Tall, lean, and fit, with notably long legs 13 30.
- Face: A small head and narrow face, pronounced bone structure, a high nose, and thin lips 13.
- Eyes: Thick brows, distinct double eyelids, and long, dense eyelashes 6 13 22.
- Expression: Often looks at people through half-lowered eyelids, giving Xie Yibai an impression of impatience or dismissal. His slight smiles can convey mockery, embarrassment, or amusement 13 19.
- Complexion: His face flushes unevenly after washing, particularly around his nose and cheeks, softening his usually stern appearance 9.
Personality
Sheng Ke is blunt, arrogant, and uncompromising about his work. He refuses to let even Zou Yan influence his casting decisions, telling him to find another director if he wants control over the roles. His sarcasm frequently irritates both Zou Yan and Xie Yibai, although Zou Yan describes him as straightforward once someone knows him well 6 14 32.
He is observant and suspicious of performed emotions. Initially, he regards Xie Yibai’s behavior toward Zou Yan as calculated and repeatedly warns that Zou Yan’s affection is not reciprocated. As he spends more time with Xie Yibai, however, he begins questioning whether apparent manipulation might coexist with genuine innocence 18 19 40.
His professional diligence contrasts with his indifference to material comfort. He keeps a demanding work schedule, limits social engagements, and can spend days absorbed in a screenplay. At home, he eats simple mixtures directly from the cooking pan, rents a furnished apartment, borrows a car, and chooses clothes for comfort rather than prestige. He also dislikes having other people in his home and declines to hire domestic help 17 33 40 45.
His conduct toward Xie Yibai becomes coercive. He knowingly continues a sexual encounter after Xie mistakes him for Zou Yan, then initially argues that the situation was not entirely his fault. Although he subsequently apologizes and provides practical care, he continues pressuring Xie to choose him and later forces a kiss while negotiating secrecy. His assertion that bodily responses reveal someone’s “truest” feelings is explicitly rejected by Xie 47 48 49 50.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Audition and Growing Interest
Sheng Ke’s rejection of Xie Yibai gives the actor an early setback in his attempt to enter films. When Zou Yan asks him to provide a role as a favor, Sheng Ke refuses to compromise his casting 2 6.
After Xie accidentally enters his car and falls asleep, Sheng Ke finds his lost pendant. He also obtains Xie’s WeChat contact, sends a warning about Zou Yan’s invitations, then recalls the message and deletes him. Their later encounters gradually replace his initial dismissiveness with curiosity and attraction 9 19 23.
The Promised Film
Following the pendant’s return, Xie asks for the male lead in Sheng Ke’s next film as compensation for being teased. Sheng Ke agrees and develops a screenplay centered on a male host, bringing Xie into his research at a nightclub 23 30.
Xie subsequently decides to distance himself from Sheng Ke. After Zou Yan confronts him about supposedly frightening Xie, Sheng Ke saves rather than deletes the manuscript. He later avoids showing it to Zou Yan, but eventually offers it to him after the hotel incident 33 40 50.
Hotel Incident and Aftermath
When Zou Yan leaves on business, he sends Sheng Ke to deliver flowers to Xie’s hotel room. In the dark, Xie mistakes Sheng Ke for Zou Yan and initiates contact. Sheng Ke realizes the misunderstanding but proceeds without identifying himself 46 47.
After discovering his identity, Xie accuses him of betraying Zou Yan. Sheng Ke offers himself as an alternative partner and source of career support, later apologizing and promising to accept blame if Zou Yan is told. Xie considers reporting him but fears the consequences for his career and decides against it 48 49.
Sheng Ke returns with food and dries Xie’s hair, but continues pressing him about his feelings. Xie chooses Zou Yan and slaps Sheng Ke after he proposes another sexual encounter as a test. Sheng Ke subsequently promises secrecy, forces a kiss, and declares that he likes Xie. Separately, Zou Yan asks him to bury those feelings as a secret 49 50.
