Background

Jiraiya was a student of the Third Hokage and a fellow Sannin alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Though once considered the Third Hokage's preferred successor, he rejected the position because he considered the burden of Hokage too heavy; Minato later became Fourth Hokage, while Tsunade became Fifth. 58 129

He knew Minato Namikaze closely and regarded Naruto as Minato's son from their first encounter. Jiraiya seeks to honor Minato's request by teaching Naruto the Rasengan and helping him eventually control the Nine-Tails. 35 80 89

Before the main events, Jiraiya taught Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato. His discovery that Nagato commands the Rinnegan-bearing Paths of Pain turns this former teacher-student connection into a personal conflict. 179 182

Appearance

Jiraiya is recognizable by his white hair, “oil” forehead protector, and wooden clogs. 38

  • White hair slicked back from his face. 76
  • Forehead protector bearing the kanji for “oil.” 35
  • Often carries a ninja tool bag filled with both conventional gear and scratch-off prizes. 73 179
  • Frequently wears scratch-off glasses, including his Top-tier X-Ray Glasses. 35 73

Personality

Jiraiya is flamboyant, boastful, and openly lecherous. He regularly lets curiosity, novels, films, and attractive women distract him—even during missions or Naruto's Sage Mode training. 42 92 109 217

Behind the theatrics, he is fiercely committed to Konoha and the Will of Fire. He is willing to confront Orochimaru, investigate Akatsuki alone, and make painful decisions to protect others, including ending Yun Mu's brother's Cursed Seal-induced suffering at her request. 58 60 96 176

He is also quick-thinking under pressure. During his second encounter with Pain, he conceals his survival by posing as his own fictional brother, “Jirai Shui.” 233
