Political Position

Mingzhou is one of Great Xia's three major heteronomous kingdoms, alongside Songzhou and Suizhou. Each possesses extensive territory, its own court, and its own army, giving the three regions the practical character of states within a state 45 56.

Its semi-independent position becomes increasingly precarious after the Ming Army's defeat by the Jurchen. Yujing City is expected to use the military disaster to pressure the Mingzhou ruler and reclaim authority, while the Mingzhou court seeks to preserve its autonomy 53.

History

White Lotus Sect foothold

After the White Lotus Sect's Yujing network is exposed, Mu Yinyao sends Wen Qingkong to Mingzhou with funds, the Nine Revolutions Golden Body Art, and a prepared residence. The sect intends for him to establish roots in the provincial capital, operate a corpse-seamstress house, gather intelligence, and conduct future work on its behalf 36.

The residence is deliberately isolated, with a river behind it, a main road before it, and dead-end lanes on both sides. Its front courtyard is stocked for corpse-sewing work, while the rear courtyard contains the living quarters, kitchen, and stables 36.

Dark Stone and court intrigue

Mingzhou's Dark Stone branch is led by King Runner, though it is secretly only one branch of a wider assassin network directed from Yujing City. Dark Stone manipulates assassinations, investigations, and even official promotions in Mingzhou 45 48.

Wen Qingkong, Jiang Asheng, and Zeng Jing move against King Runner and his local assassins to eliminate the organization as a threat to their identities 46. Afterward, Wen uses Azure Garret to absorb Dark Stone's remaining Mingzhou power 129.

The death of Minister of War Yang Yuxuan exposes further court turmoil. His corpse is brought to Wen Qingkong for repair, while an Eastern Depot eunuch attempts to infiltrate the workshop; Yang's death becomes entangled with the struggle between Mingzhou officials, the Depots, and Dragon Guard Manor 56 57.

Replacement of the Mingzhou ruler

Wen Qingkong discovers that Zhu Shiyun, the Heir of Duke Pingnan, closely resembles the reigning Mingzhou ruler. He proposes replacing the ruler with Zhu Shiyun rather than backing Prince Xin, reasoning that the substitution would give the White Lotus Sect control of Mingzhou without an overt succession struggle 94.

The plan succeeds when Zhu Shiyun, Wen Qingkong, and Chief Eunuch Wang assassinate the reigning Ming Emperor in the royal study. Zhu Shiyun changes into the dead ruler's robes and assumes his identity; the bodies of the ruler and the Yu Brothers are destroyed with Corpse Dissolving Fluid 136.

Following the coup, Zhu Shiyun expels Jianghu martial artists from the palace and establishes the Golden Guard under Wang Cheng'en to counterbalance the Eastern Depot, Western Depot, and Brocade Guard 136.

Break with the White Lotus Sect

Although the White Lotus Sect initially treats Mingzhou as a major victory, Wen Qingkong urges Zhu Shiyun to secure military authority and distance himself from the sect's attempt to control his succession 138.

Mu Yinyao eventually recognizes that Wen Qingkong—not the White Lotus Sect—holds decisive influence over Mingzhou's resources and personnel. She concludes that the city may become a liability to her position within the sect 176.

After Wen Qingkong kills Mu Yinyao and Elder Hua Ti, he orders Tang Yuanlou to return to Mingzhou and reorganize the White Lotus Sect there under new leadership 246.

Rise of Great Ming

Mingzhou develops from a threatened border vassal into the base of Great Ming's expansion. Its forces intervene in Songzhou, and the Ming Army's entry into Bianjing ends the Song dynasty's rule there; Great Ming formally annexes Songzhou and controls half the realm 244.

Great Ming later advances through the Mongol Empire, Turkic territory, Suizhou, and finally Yujing City. After Xia Yuan's defeat and Yujing's fall, Zhu Shiyun's regime gains control of the realm 289 290.
