Background

Tang Yuanlou was banished to Mingzhou City after killing a White Lotus Sect general without authorization. He considered the general's death justified because the man preyed upon commoners, but the sect still punished him despite his previous contributions. 66

As a Red Lotus disciple, he led thirty followers in Mingzhou, where they preached the sect's cause and recruited ordinary people. He repeatedly distributed rice and grain to attract followers, while his unsuccessful businesses depleted his funds; once the provisions ran out, recruitment collapsed and sect funding was reduced. Tang and his followers were eventually left unable to afford regular meals. 51

Rather than resort to robbery, Tang argued that the White Lotus Sect could not claim to build a just future while using martial force to violate the law. 51 He later sought Wen Qingkong's help to revive his failing Welcoming Guest Inn. Acting on Wen's advice, the inn shifted toward inexpensive, filling meals for dock laborers, quickly gaining a customer base. 53 58
