First Appearance Chapter 19, “Yupa, the Sea of Corruption’s Greatest Swordsman” 19

Background

Yupa was born and raised in the Valley of the Wind, but spent much of his life traveling. His journeys made him a recognized scholar and explorer, as well as the greatest swordsman acknowledged by the nations surrounding the Sea of Corruption. Whenever he returned home, he brought knowledge, accounts of distant places, and local specialties. King Jihl traditionally welcomed him with a feast for the entire valley 19.

An old friend of Jihl, Yupa once suspended his travels for several years at the king’s request to teach Nausicaä. He was also drawn by her exceptional potential and looked forward to the day she could fight him at full strength. Through her, he learned little-known details about the perceptions and intelligence of plants, animals, and insects 22 25.

Yupa was a close friend of King Deus, the explorer-king of the kingdom from which Eliana and Lucian fled. They arranged to explore unknown territory in the western Sea of Corruption together, but unforeseen incidents delayed Yupa for months. By the time he arrived, Deus and his finest expedition team had disappeared. Yupa blamed himself for missing the journey, believing his presence might have prevented the tragedy 19 20.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall, broad, and powerfully built; approximately two heads taller than Nausicaä during their duel 24.
  • Face: Rugged from years of exposure to wind and sand, with a thick flaxen beard covering most of its lower half 19.
  • Clothing: Brown traveling clothes, a protective cloak, and a wide-brimmed hat; he also wears leather armor 19 79 129.
  • Bearing: Compared to a hawk, both in his everyday presence and when excited by a worthy opponent 19 25.

Personality

Yupa combines an intense thirst for knowledge with a lifelong devotion to martial training. Despite his natural gifts, he practices consistently and relishes opportunities to test himself. Discovering the Erdtree excites his scholarly curiosity, while Nausicaä’s newfound strength gives him the serious contest he had long hoped to have with her 22 24 25.

His curiosity does not override his caution. He initially refuses Mu En’s offer of power and longevity because he distrusts the obligations and possible hidden costs of a blessing. His stated preference for an unrestricted traveler’s life is partly an excuse: his deeper concern is whether Nausicaä and the valley could bear the price demanded by an unknown being 23 24.

As an instructor, Yupa is exacting, blunt, and willing to impose severe hardship. Outside training, however, his knowledge, humorous travel stories, and experience with students make him popular with the soldiers. He later acknowledges that his earliest Blessed Warrior training may have been excessive and objects to applying comparable demands to ordinary militia 75 85.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Footwork

Yupa rivals members of the Golden Folk through training and technique rather than an Erdtree blessing 176.

  • Blind-spot movement: Uses his cloak to draw an opponent’s attention while moving to the opposite side, then stays outside their clear field of vision 25.
  • Anticipation: Positions his blade to intercept an opponent’s turns, footwork, and attempted counterattacks 25.
  • Rapid combinations: Attacks multiple vulnerable areas in succession, making Nausicaä feel as though she is fighting several opponents at once 25.
  • Dual-sword combat: Uses the Ohmu Twin Swords together to break weapons, counter simultaneous attacks, and cut through armored enemies 78 182.
  • Unarmed integration: Incorporates kicks, elbows, knees, and weapon-hilt strikes when sword movements alone cannot answer an attack 24 78.

Physical Prowess and Limits

  • Strength: Twists a ceramic steel sword until it warps and shatters. Later, Por and Kamlin together remain slightly weaker than him in a direct struggle 24 79.
  • Speed: Crosses five meters before ordinary spectators can follow his movement and performs a multi-opponent exchange in under two seconds 78.
  • Control: Can target disabling joints and limbs while avoiding vital areas during dangerous training 48.
  • Age-related decline: Mu En assesses that Yupa has exhausted his natural potential and begun to decline physically 23.
  • Endurance limit: Begins tiring during nearly five minutes of high-speed combat with Nausicaä, while she maintains her initial pace 26.
  • Technical trade-off: His intricate footwork prevents him from simultaneously committing his full strength; with a damaged sword, his rapid attacks cannot decisively penetrate Nausicaä’s enhanced defenses 25.
  • No personal Incantations: He remains unblessed during the Pejite infiltration and must ride on Ashta’s back for the aerial deployment 182.

Combat Instruction and Tactics

Yupa turns newly empowered recruits into disciplined fighters by teaching them to use their enhanced bodies effectively 43 48.

  • Accelerated training: Combines disabling attacks, repeated healing, and paired combat to develop footwork, reactions, and practical killing techniques 48.
  • Collective responsibility: Makes the whole squad answer for individual failures, encouraging the soldiers to push one another 44.
  • Unit cohesion: Deliberately becomes the squad’s common opponent, with Por and Kamlin helping direct the soldiers’ rivalry toward defeating him 50.
  • Militia fundamentals: Emphasizes discipline, obedience, physical conditioning, formation, and competent weapon handling 75 77.
  • Incantation-based doctrine: Devises a practical Blessed Warrior fighting method combining Erdtree’s Protection, Shield of Immutability, Order’s Blade, and Golden Power Hammer. These are techniques used by his soldiers, not powers he personally possesses 179.
  • Other martial skills: Is described as highly accomplished in archery and horsemanship as well as swordsmanship 43.

Exploration, Research, and Investigation

  • Sea of Corruption expertise: Knows its outer regions intimately and recognizes seasonal fungal dormancy as a safer exploration window 74 130.
  • Ecological knowledge: Understands the complexity of ecosystems and questions the assumption that the Erdtree must simply oppose the Sea of Corruption 130.
  • Toxin testing: Collects fungal samples and tests them with a liquid reagent that changes color in the presence of poison 130 131.
  • Tracking and inference: Investigates local conspirators, identifies their likely connection to a Tolmekian agent, and follows suspicious Dorok troop movements to a concealed entrance 36 182.
  • Interrogation: Extracts testimony from Sevito and forces a Dorok monk official to provide information about the underground ruins 61 182.

Equipment

  • Ohmu Twin Swords: His signature weapons, comprising one long sword and one short sword made from white Ohmu shell. They can pierce ceramic steel armor; the shortsword splits Nausicaä’s ceramic steel blade lengthwise during their duel 26 77.
  • Ceramic steel swords: Uses these for sparring and the Blessed Warriors’ intensive training 24 48.
  • Wooden training sword: Defeats ten newly Blessed soldiers with one in less than thirty seconds, without drawing his own weapons 44.
  • Travel protection: Cloak, wide-brimmed hat, leather armor, and a respirator mask for expeditions into the Sea of Corruption 19 79 129.
  • Sampling tools: Carries a short knife, glass test tubes, and toxin-testing liquid 130.

Relationships

  • Nausicaä — His prized student and the daughter of his old friend Jihl. He teaches her swordsmanship, recognizes her growing strength, and supports her authority when Mito objects to her joining the gathering expedition 19 25 87.
  • King Jihl — Longtime friend who asked him to remain in the valley to educate Nausicaä 19 25.
  • King Deus — Close friend and intended exploration partner. Deus’s disappearance leaves Yupa with lasting regret 19 20.
  • Mu En / the Erdtree — Initially distrusts his offer of a blessing, but cooperates in military training and exploration without accepting that power 23 74 182.
  • Por and Kamlin — Promising trainees who help unite the Blessed Warriors. Yupa agrees to teach them separately while explicitly declining to call them his formal disciples 50.
  • Eliana and Lucian — Brings them to safety in the valley after their kingdom’s collapse. Lucian admires his reputation and later watches his training demonstration 19 77.
  • Ashta — Deputy leader of the Mercenary Corps of the Wind who carries him during the Pejite deployment and accompanies his underground search 182.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Return to the Valley and the Erdtree

Yupa returns with Eliana and Lucian and reports their kingdom’s effective collapse. When Nausicaä suspects hostile explorers may be concealed among the approaching refugees, he initially challenges the evidence but recognizes that the valley’s inexperienced defenders would struggle against such opponents 19 21 22.

After learning about Mu En, Yupa refuses a blessing. Nausicaä proposes a duel: if she wins, he must reconsider. Her strength overwhelms him in a direct contest, but his footwork and experience keep the fight competitive. He ultimately draws an Ohmu shortsword, cuts through her weapon, and lightly wounds her arm. Nausicaä concedes; Yupa offers to call the result a draw and acknowledges that she is already no weaker than him. His recruitment as a Blessed is set aside 23 24 25 26.

Securing and Training the Valley

Yupa helps organize the Festival of Grace and captures five villagers involved in a conspiracy. Their references to an outside “lord” and reinforcements lead him to suspect a Tolmekian agent 29 36.

Appointed combat instructor for the first ten Blessed Warriors, he immediately defeats them with a wooden sword. His subsequent three-day program uses the Erdtree’s healing to sustain combat far beyond ordinary training limits. The recruits rapidly develop practical fighting skills, though they are not yet battle-hardened elites 43 44 48.

During a later challenge, the squad’s coordination forces Yupa to fight seriously. He disables four warriors and presses Por, Kamlin, and Elphias Doge onto the defensive. Kamlin wounds his arm with a thrown Order’s Blade before he and Por grapple Yupa to restrict his movement 78 79.

When the force expands to twenty warriors, Yupa repeats the intensive induction and makes it a standing tradition. He remains head instructor, with the warriors divided into teams led by Por and Kamlin 85.

Sea of Corruption Expedition

Yupa agrees to lead a small expedition despite concerns that increased human activity or the Erdtree’s power might provoke the insects. The approved plan sends ten people to establish an outpost and test the forest’s response 74 86.

Accompanying Sura’s Law of Regression experiment, Yupa finds that the affected fungi become nontoxic and begins to suspect they were poisoned rather than inherently poisonous. Mu En then explains that the fungi absorb environmental toxins and purify them into clean sand and water vapor. Yupa also reports that the Erdtree’s power has caused no adverse reaction, allowing exploration to continue 130 131 132.

Battle of Pejite and the Giant God Warrior

Nausicaä assigns Yupa command of the ground operation to locate the Giant God Warrior while other forces seize the Endure Battleship. Despite being unblessed, he leads more than a hundred Blessed members of the Mercenary Corps of the Wind 176.

After deployment, Yupa follows suspicious Dorok soldiers to a hidden underground entrance. He cuts down roughly twenty guards, obtains information from a monk official, and leads his squad into a laboratory containing a living Ohmu larva. The squad escapes after the guards are alerted and proceeds toward King Asumo’s position in Ruin No. 3 182.

On learning that the larva is intended to lure an insect swarm into destroying Pejite, Yupa regrets leaving it behind and wishes he had known soon enough to attempt a rescue, even at the cost of his life 183.

Yupa later joins Nausicaä in discovering the regenerating Giant God Warrior. After Asumo gives her the Secret Stone, Yupa and the others realize that they can no longer remember the name or face of the king’s missing young minister 195.
