Background / History

Previous Life and Ji Wan’s Betrayal

In his previous life, Ye Chenfeng left his mountain village at fifteen to seek immortality, expecting to return soon to his childhood sweetheart, Ji Wan. He instead searched for ten years before accidentally entering a sect formation and being discovered to possess a Spirit Root. When he finally returned home after reaching Foundation Establishment, war had transformed the village and none of his old acquaintances remained 678.

He reunited with Ji Wan after becoming a Golden Core cultivator: he represented the righteous path’s younger generation, while she represented the demonic path. After resolving their misunderstanding, they withdrew from their factions, traveled as rogue cultivators, and eventually ascended together 678.

Immortality left them subject to powerful sects and dangerous assignments. After they reached Heavenly Immortal and encountered an emperor’s inheritance, Ji Wan attacked the unsuspecting Ye Chenfeng. His body was destroyed, his protective immortal sword broke, and his immortal soul nearly dispersed 678 679 855.

The inheritance had two portions. Ji Wan obtained the cause half of the Great Dao of Cause and Effect, while Ye Chenfeng carried the effect half into reincarnation. Ji Wan reincarnated earlier and had already ascended again by the time he recovered his memories 679.

Azure Pool Sect

In his current life, Ye Chenfeng began as a farmer’s son. Finding an ancient sword pellet in a field brought him into contact with Elder Jian, whose remnant soul resided inside it. Elder Jian supplied a supreme sword Dao cultivation technique and guided him while he kept a low profile in Azure Pool’s mine 15.

Ye Chenfeng repeatedly noticed that fellow disciple Lu Li was unusual, even when Elder Jian dismissed Lu Li’s aptitude. He sought opportunities to associate with him, including a proposed Foundation Establishment cave-abode expedition and an armor test in which Lu Li caught his flying sword barehanded 33 50 57.

Their cooperation became more serious in battle. Ye Chenfeng enthusiastically fought alongside Lu Li against Li Xian, defended him during a cave-abode dispute, and later killed Bai Kun in a secret realm. During another fierce encounter, he was badly wounded while protecting Lu Li 91 112 136 139.

Hanging Blade Pass and the Return for Lu Li

After escaping Azure Pool with Elder Jian’s help, Ye Chenfeng enlisted at Hanging Blade Pass in Jingxi Prefecture. He intended to grow strong enough to return and save Lu Li, whom he believed remained trapped in the Demon Manor 166 221 263.

He spent ten years killing demons at the pass, repeatedly dedicating his sword strikes to Lu Li. Despite Elder Jian’s objections, he later concealed his cultivation and entered the Demon Manor’s heartland to seek his friend 229 260 264.

There he encountered Lu Changming and the soul cultivator Huijinzi. Recognizing Lu Li’s distinctive combat armor led him to identify Changming as his friend’s disciple. He destroyed Huijinzi’s soul treasure, searched and refined his Divine Soul, and obtained information about escaping the Demon Manor 263 264.

Upon finally reuniting with Lu Li, Ye Chenfeng offered him the fourth-tier soul treasure, believing it could conceal his presence well enough to escape despite having consumed a Dao Fruit 272 273.

Dao Academy and Heaven Surveillance Division

Ye Chenfeng joined the Dao Academy as a Golden Core sword cultivator. He later gave Lu Li a tiger demon’s jade bone for Nascent Soul Formation and agreed to oversee academy affairs during Lu Li’s seclusion. Lu Li accepted both the gift and Ye Chenfeng’s brotherhood, setting aside his earlier reservations about their karmic ties 277 309.

As chief of the Dao Court’s Heaven Surveillance Division, Ye Chenfeng was responsible for monitoring powerful cultivators and individuals with unusual Fate Patterns. Although still at Golden Core Great Perfection, his combat strength and Elder Jian’s support allowed him to command the respect of Nascent Soul subordinates 388.

Yinyang Qingfan’s taking of Elder Jian left him deeply burdened by guilt. He cultivated on Imprisoned Dragon Mountain and, after a century apart, reunited with Lu Li looking markedly older and withdrawn. Lu Li promised vengeance for Elder Jian and Dongfang Jiangxue 389 419.

Captivity and Infiltration of the Ji Household

The Ji Household imprisoned Ye Chenfeng and forced him into lethal arena battles. Determined to survive until he could see Lu Li again, he won nine fights against opponents above his realm, gained freedom from the slave register, and became a Combat Hall guard 621 629.

Elder Jian persuaded him that returning immediately would not solve his growing inability to protect the Dao Court against its strongest enemies. Ye Chenfeng remained to strengthen himself, eventually recovering his previous-life memories and recognizing Ji Wan’s place in the household’s history 632 679.

Using the Instantaneous Scroll, he infiltrated restricted areas, acquired resources, and investigated the Jade Capital Immortal Palace. After more than a century, he returned as a Mahayana Supreme and intervened against Ji Shanhai, who had wounded Lu Li 689 697.

When Lu Li later captured Ji Wan’s Dharma body, Ye Chenfeng confronted her directly. Her attempt to provoke distrust by revealing Lu Li’s supposed Creation Supreme Treasure failed; he instead reaffirmed that no treasure would make him betray his senior brother 718.

Immortal Realm and Human Immortal Tribulation

After ascending, Ye Chenfeng guided Lu Li through the Immortal Realm’s cultivation system and restrictions on Immortal Methods. He also fulfilled his promise to Elder Jian by condensing a new body for him using Immortal Power and precious materials 737 739 806.

Following Lu Li’s disappearance, the Profound Cavern Great Market fell into turmoil. Bone Mountain, Ten Thousand Demons, and Su Beixiao died, while Ye Chenfeng and Suanni were separated. Ye Chenfeng survived alone until Lu Li returned and rescued him from four Ninth-Turn True Immortals 786.

His Human Immortal Tribulation returned him to the village of his previous life. He initially insisted that everything was an illusion, later accepting a mortal life and an arranged marriage as possible routes through the trial. The illusion’s Ji Wan, now a cultivator, abducted him after concluding that someone had possessed her childhood companion 821 822 823.

Ye Chenfeng told her about their future together and her betrayal. After releasing him, she killed herself, breaking the tribulation. He emerged as a Human Immortal but remained mournful, explaining that the world had been false while his hatred for Ji Wan had been real 824 825.

Depictions Within Ji Wan’s Tribulation

A later illusion experienced by Ji Wan depicts the pair ascending through True Immortal, Human Immortal, Earth Immortal, and Heavenly Immortal within the Four Extremes Immortal Sect. Repeated missions, taxes, and long separations exhaust them despite their breakthroughs. These are events inside Ji Wan’s tribulation, not additional advancements of the present-day Ye Chenfeng 852 853.

Appearance

  • Early cultivation: Handsome and dashing, with white robes and an oppressive, sword-sharp presence 89.
  • At Hanging Blade Pass: Wore a bamboo hat; his narrow, swordlike eyes and stern expression reflected his increasingly withdrawn bearing 166.
  • After a century on Imprisoned Dragon Mountain: Ink-black hair streaked with frost-white, fine lines resembling sword scars around his eyes, and a weathered face. Lu Li attributed these changes to his troubled state of mind 419.

Personality

Ye Chenfeng begins as enthusiastic, impulsive, and eager for adventure. Great Xia’s early assessment describes him as young and not deeply calculating; his excitement at testing Lu Li’s armor and fighting beside him supports that impression 54 57 91.

Loyalty governs his major decisions. He risks entering the Demon Manor for Lu Li, offers a valuable soul treasure without hesitation, and continues waiting for him through isolation in the Immortal Realm. He also accepts Elder Jian’s wish to leave him for a better future, refusing to resent the mentor responsible for much of his success 260 273 388 786.

Years of warfare make him increasingly ruthless toward enemies. By the time he kills Huijinzi, ten years at Hanging Blade Pass have hardened him against pleas for mercy. Recovering his previous-life memories intensifies his hostility toward Ji Wan and the Ji Household, but does not weaken his attachment to Lu Li 264 697 718.

Abilities & Skills

Sword Dao

His Mutated Sword Spirit Root, sword essence, and Elder Jian’s cultivation method give him exceptional offensive strength 15 91.

  • Multi-sword formations: Uses nine swords in coordinated arrays, including a diamond-shaped formation against Li Xian 91.
  • Realm-crossing combat: At Qi Refining Ninth Layer, was already capable of killing Foundation Establishment cultivators 91.
  • Void Breaking: Divides sword light into nine fierce streams that form a net around a fleeing target 264.
  • Spiritual Power swords: Can form nine flying swords directly from Spiritual Power 621.
  • Limits: At Sixth-Turn True Immortal, could not confront four Ninth-Turn True Immortals head-on despite his above-peer combat strength 786.

At Golden Core Great Perfection, ordinary Nascent Soul cultivators were no match for his full strength. With Elder Jian’s assistance, he could even withstand Spirit Transformation cultivators; this was not presented as his unaided capability 388.

Great Dao of Cause and Effect

He possesses the effect half of the Great Dao of Cause and Effect through the Great Emperor’s inheritance 679 820.

  • The inheritance fused into his current body and accompanied him through reincarnation 679.
  • Its power is genuine Great Dao power, although his limited Law Power initially makes it resemble ordinary mortal-world Dao Laws 679.
  • He regards Ji Shanhai’s inherited causality techniques as an incomplete version of the Dao he possesses 697.

Previous-Life Cultivation Knowledge

His experience as a Heavenly Immortal makes him a principal cultivation adviser to Lu Li after ascension 703 806.

  • Recognizes the Heavenly Decree Golden Wheel and explains its authority and possible advancement 703.
  • Explains restrictions on Immortal Methods and the importance of methods and artifacts to immortal combat 739 744.
  • Describes the Life-Refining and World-Nurturing approaches to the Earth Immortal Tribulation, including their risks and trade-offs 806 807.
  • Knowledge ceiling: Can advise comprehensively before Heavenly Immortal; his understanding beyond that realm is largely secondhand 739 806.

Divine Sense, Soul Search, and Concealment

  • Uses Divine Sense to investigate cave abodes, examine armor, and inspect treasures 261 263 264.
  • Searches and refines Huijinzi’s Divine Soul to obtain information 264.
  • Conceals his cultivation while infiltrating the Demon Manor 260.
  • Learns the Feather Transformation into a Thousand Shadows Spirit-Concealing Art from Lu Li 825.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ancient sword pellet — Thumb-sized treasure housed in his Dantian; contains Elder Jian’s remnant soul and sword essence that Ye Chenfeng refines early in his cultivation 15.
  • Flying swords — His signature weapons progress from first-tier swords to nine third-tier swords and eventually nine Pseudo-Immortal Artifact flying swords 89 229 697.
  • Pale-blue combat law armor — Purchased from Lu Li; provides enclosed protection and flight used in pursuing enemies 89 263.
  • Spirit Machinery Mech and Battle Law Armor 2.0 — Used during the secret-realm battle; the mech was destroyed and the armor damaged while he protected Lu Li 139.
  • Mirage Soul Pearl — Fourth-tier soul treasure acquired after Huijinzi’s death; contained soul-cultivation resources and a cultivation method. Ye Chenfeng later offered it as a means of concealing Lu Li’s presence 264 273.

  • Dao Court identification jade slip — Communication and authorization item; during Yinyang Qingfan’s confrontation, he prepared to use it to activate his flagship’s spiritual nuclear weapon if necessary 389.

Relationships

  • Lu Li — Sect companion, senior brother, and closest chosen family. Their relationship develops from Ye Chenfeng’s persistent overtures and Lu Li’s suspicion into a bond forged through battle; Ye Chenfeng later calls Lu Li his only family in this life 54 139 309 697.
  • Elder Jian — Mentor and companion residing in his sword pellet. Their relationship combines instruction, arguments, and mutual support; Ye Chenfeng ultimately repays him by creating a new body after ascending 15 388 737.
  • Ji Wan — Childhood sweetheart and lover from his previous life, later his betrayer and enemy. Her illusion counterpart’s death becomes the decisive event in his Human Immortal Tribulation 678 718 824 825.
  • Suanni — Fellow captive and long-term companion during the Ji Household arc. Ye Chenfeng promises him a chance to become Demon Emperor; they later fight together before being separated in the Great Market’s chaos 621 679 713 786.
  • Lu Changming — Lu Li’s eldest disciple, who addresses him as Martial Uncle Ye. Ye Chenfeng helps him defeat Huijinzi and eagerly seeks news of his master 263 264.
  • Ji Shanhai — Former superior who transferred him into a personal guard, later an enemy whom Ye Chenfeng confronts for injuring Lu Li 697.
  • Bai Kun — Sect adversary first confronted over Lu Li’s cave abode; later killed by Ye Chenfeng in the secret realm 112 136.

Notable Quotes

“Hmph, in this life, Senior Brother Lu is my only family.” 697

“Back then, you betrayed me for an Immortal Emperor’s inheritance. Today, even if a Creation Supreme Treasure truly stood before me, I would never betray Senior Brother!” 718

Trivia

  • Great Xia’s early profile assigned him an apparent risk of grade C but a potential risk of grade S, citing immense latent capabilities and the mysterious presence within him 54.
  • Lu Li repeatedly interprets him as a “protagonist” burdened with unusually powerful karma; this is Lu Li’s assessment rather than a cultivation title 136 221.
  • Ye Chenfeng later speculates that Lu Li might be the reincarnated Great Emperor of Cause and Effect. He explicitly lacks proof and ultimately decides that his trust in Lu Li does not depend on the answer 820.
