Background

Yinyang Qingfan began as a child of a collateral branch of a great clan, rose to lead it, and eventually transcended her original world. It took her one hundred thousand years to progress from Zou Qingfan to Yinyang Qingfan. The Central Continent’s Yin-Yang School consists of her distant clan descendants 369 395 411.

After ascending from the Imprisoned Dragon Realm, she cultivated in Great Desolation for countless years. Although she became a Heavenly Immortal official, she described her standing within that greater world as middling at best. The Heavenly Court had already been absent from public view for a hundred million years when she arrived 424 506 522.

She survived the catastrophe called the Great Nirvana. Her account describes the destruction of the Three Realms, the severing of reincarnation, and time itself breaking. She witnessed a mighty being freeze and vanish, after which Great Desolation was left empty of living beings and traditions. An ancient fragment containing the term “Silent Ruins” became one of the few clues she could give Lu Li 417 424.

At the boundary between life and death, she sacrificed her cultivation to obtain a four-character Saint’s oracle concerning a future position arising “in the east.” She initially interpreted this as referring to the Dongfang Household, a subordinate clan of her Yin-Yang School. After falling into the lower realm, she selected Dongfang Jiangxue as her vessel, but awakened to find herself exiled to the Western Continent by her own descendants 369 394 411.

Appearance

  • Shared human vessel: During her early appearances, she acts through Dongfang Jiangxue’s body; those descriptions do not establish Qingfan’s original appearance 390 394.
  • White robes: Appears in snow-white robes when submitting to Lu Li and uses flowing white robes to intercept Hui Ye’s attacks 421 524.
  • Later puppet vessel: Her remnant soul is transferred into a ninth-tier spirit puppet; its appearance is not specified 737.

Personality

Qingfan is proud of her seniority and former immortal status. She initially treats lower-realm cultivators as beneath her, takes offense at Elder Jian addressing her as a fellow Daoist, and repeatedly loses patience when Mahayana cultivators behave arrogantly before her. This temper can override caution even when her Divine Soul is already weakened 389 527.

Her pride coexists with considerable pragmatism. Once she concludes that helping Lu Li offers her best chance of recovering her Dao Path, she abandons her assassination plan and studies how to earn his acceptance. She also moderates her treatment of Elder Jian after realizing how much he matters to Lu Li and Ye Chenfeng 394 416 419.

Her allegiance becomes more than an arrangement for personal survival. Against Chu Changyue, she refuses to abandon Lu Li despite having the option to escape, then stakes her own Divine Soul essence on protecting him. After committing herself, she regards hesitation and divided loyalties as obstacles to their shared future 429 526 528.

Abilities & Skills

Yin-Yang Techniques

  • Yin-Yang Qi: Uses powerful black-and-white forces in battle, including overwhelming attacks against the Western Sea coalition’s commanders 463 525.
  • Detection of divination: Immediately senses a distant Yin-Yang School cultivator performing divination on her. Distance prevents her from fully tracing his appearance and origins 461.
  • Clan interrogation: Can obtain detailed information from Yin-Yang School descendants through secret methods without searching their souls 469.
  • Restrictions: Lu Li assigns her to place restrictions on Zou Moshan and Zou Yu before admitting them into the Dao Court 469.

Immortal Dao: Yin-Yang Descent

  • Produces intertwined black-and-white streams resembling enormous rotating millstones 525 527.
  • Carries complete Dao Laws and pressure surpassing the Mahayana level; destroys Demon Venerable Hui Ye in a single strike 525.
  • Repeated use while weakened leaves its manifestations visibly less substantial. Against Chu Changyue, she ultimately draws on her Divine Soul essence to continue fighting 527 528.

Divine Soul Cultivation

  • Mahayana combat strength: Can kill Dao Integration beasts and defeat two Tribulation Transcendence sea beasts over approximately five days 520 523.
  • Remote puppet control: Engraves a trace of her Divine Soul imprint onto a puppet to control it briefly without Dongfang Jiangxue knowing what she is doing 376.
  • Shared-body life preservation: Extends Dongfang Jiangxue’s life, though their coexistence initially leaves Jiangxue under her control 411.
  • Sensory isolation: Can seal her five senses and Divine Soul during agreed periods, allowing Jiangxue private time with Lu Changming 428.
  • Limitations: Her soul-based power initially lacks Mahayana-grade offensive equipment and the broader methods of a complete Mahayana cultivator. Even after her recovery, Chu Changbo’s enhanced late-Mahayana strike breaks her defense 524 615.

Spatial Travel and Concealment

  • Tears open spatial rifts, travels through the void, and transports others with her 389 411 484.
  • Conceals herself while observing Lu Li and the Dao Court over an extended period 394 411.
  • Possesses a concealment method she claimed could deceive even a Supreme Mahayana cultivator. Dongfang Jiangxue later teaches Lu Li what she knows of it 535.
  • Spatial escape is not unrestricted: Hui Ye’s attack prevents her and Lu Li from simply breaking through the void to leave the trench 524.

Cultivation and Immortal-World Knowledge

  • Cultivation instruction: Her pointers improve Lu Li’s cultivation methods, body cultivation, and offensive techniques. However, remembered explanations cannot replace the Jade Slip inheritances needed to transmit high-tier methods fully 434.
  • Fate analysis: Recognizes the significance of Lu Li simultaneously possessing the Dragon Qi of life and death, identifying it with the legendary Emperor Aspect 421 423.
  • Realm expertise: Explains world classifications, immortal cultivation, ascension preparations, and the Imprisoned Dragon Heavenly Dao’s restrictions 423 515 522.
  • Puppet ascension: Explains that puppet cultivators can ascend using ninth-tier spirit materials, making the cultivator’s soul and talent more important than immortal-grade construction materials 845.
  • Limits of expertise: Is not skilled in artifact refinement, and her knowledge of Great Desolation reflects her former position rather than complete familiarity with its highest powers 506 838.

Equipment & Items

  • Degraded immortal puppet — An old puppet that lost its Law Power after falling into the lower realm and could barely muster Void Return combat strength 369.
  • Ao Qing’s dragon pearl — Collected after Ao Qing’s death. Its accumulated sinful karma complicated claiming it; Qingfan initially intended to use it as a catalyst for a combat puppet 370 390.
  • Ancient jade slip — Records secrets of the Eastern Wasteland. She planned to deliver it naturally to Lu Li, using information about approaching threats to demonstrate her future usefulness 415 416.
  • Dragon-Binding Rope — The Dongfang Household’s ancestral artifact, originally sealed inside Jiangxue. Qingfan erased its Artifact Spirit, reducing it to a top-grade pseudo-seventh-tier Law Treasure; it can immobilize nearby targets by solidifying space 478.
  • Damaged medicine-spoon Spirit Artifact — Received with a storage Law Treasure after the Central Continent fighting. She hoped to nurture the ninth-tier treasure into a natal soul artifact, but had not achieved that transformation 617.
  • Ninth-tier spirit-puppet body — A later independent vessel for her remnant soul, intended to support cultivation toward Mahayana Perfection and another attempt at ascension 737.

Relationships

  • Lu Li — Initially an assassination target, later her lord and the focus of her hopes for transcendence. She offers him her natal Divine Soul essence, entrusting him with control over her life and death; he later obtains the treasures needed to restore her soul 377 421 608.
  • Dongfang Jiangxue — Her original lower-realm vessel and unwilling co-occupant. Qingfan preserves Jiangxue’s life but restricts her freedom; their arrangement becomes more accommodating after Qingfan submits to Lu Li. They are eventually separated 411 428 737.
  • Lu Changming — Jiangxue’s husband and Lu Li’s disciple. He resents Qingfan’s possession of Jiangxue and demands that she leave; when she cannot, they agree on daily periods of sensory isolation 428.
  • Elder Jian / Jian Canglan — Initially abducted as a possible soul source for her puppet. He later helps reinterpret the Saint’s oracle and advises her on gaining Lu Li’s acknowledgment 389 390 394 416.
  • Ye Chenfeng — Elder Jian’s companion. His importance to Lu Li forces Qingfan to reconsider how she treats her captive 419.
  • Zou Moshan and Zou Yu — Yin-Yang School descendants whom she intimidates, questions, and places under restrictions for Dao Court service 469.
  • Lu Yao — Consults Qingfan and Elder Jian about producing True Immortal puppets. Qingfan’s explanation of soul-based ascension helps inform the proposed Immortal Puppet Soul Simulator project 845.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Enemy of the Dao Court

Qingfan initially regards Lu Li as an obstacle to reconnecting the Western and Central Continents and recovering control of the Yin-Yang School. Unable to transfer her soul fully into a puppet, she develops short-term remote control, studies the Dao Court’s machinery, and steals puppets and materials. Her intended solution is a Dao Integration combat puppet that can kill Lu Li without being restrained by Dongfang Jiangxue 376 377.

She later confronts Ye Chenfeng’s fleet and nearly crushes its spellship. Jiangxue invokes their agreement to stop her, but Qingfan takes Elder Jian and his sword pellet through the void, hoping to exploit his remnant soul for her puppet project 389 390.

Reinterpreting the Saint’s Oracle

Elder Jian’s account of Lu Li leads Qingfan to reconsider the oracle. Rather than the Dongfang Household, “Dongfang” may mean Jiangxue herself—and the path to recovery may lie in helping Lu Li through her connection to his disciple. Qingfan abandons her assassination plan and considers presenting the puppet as a gift instead 394.

Her observations of the Dao Court strengthen that decision. Its admission of mortals, preservation of dying people in puppet bodies, and voluntary loyalty to Lu Li convince her that he is no ordinary native cultivator. She resolves to become his Dao protector, but spends the following century hesitating over how to approach him 394 395 411.

Submission and Western Sea Campaign

The decisive moment comes when Qingfan witnesses Lu Li’s paired Dragon Qi of life and death. Recognizing the Emperor Aspect, she abandons her remaining conditions, reveals herself, bows, and offers her natal Divine Soul essence. Nine days of private discussions give Lu Li information about the Central Continent, her origins, and the wider cultivation cosmos 421 422 423.

She becomes a major military asset during the Western Sea campaign, killing coalition commanders, helping overwhelm its Dao Integration forces, and capturing fifteen Eastern Continent Void Return cultivators with the Dragon-Binding Rope. Qing Huayu escapes before she can restrain him 463 465 478.

Endless Deep Trench and Soul Sacrifice

Qingfan escorts Lu Li through the Endless Deep Trench, killing powerful beasts whose bodies support his cultivation. When Hui Ye attacks, she uses Yin-Yang Descent to destroy the Mahayana demon 520 523 524 525.

Chu Changyue intercepts them while she is still weakened. Rather than flee alone, Qingfan commits to protecting Lu Li and expends her Divine Soul essence. The sacrifice leaves her asleep until Lu Li returns with the soul-restoring treasures obtained through his journey to the Starry Sky Immortal Market 526 528 608.

Central Continent and Independent Vessel

After recovering, Qingfan rejoins the campaign against the Hundred Schools. Chu Changbo breaks through her protection of Lu Li, exposing her equipment disadvantage against a heavily enhanced late-Mahayana opponent. She later fights alongside Lu Li’s other subordinates against the Military School’s Supremes 615 627.

Following the emergence of True Immortals among Lu Li’s allies, the immortals extract Qingfan’s remnant soul from Jiangxue and install it in a ninth-tier spirit puppet. This gives her an independent vessel and a route toward renewed ascension, though she has not yet reached Mahayana Perfection at that point 737.

Later Dao Court Service

  • Welcomes Lu Li back to Eastern Desolation Star among the Dao Court’s immortals 813.
  • Presents the Dao Court’s military, industrial, educational, and transportation development through the Star-Eye Sentinel 814.
  • Receives orders to organize personnel, supplies, and formation support for a team that Lu Li will lead into contact with another world 814.
  • Advises Great Xia’s researchers on puppet cultivation and the soul requirements for True Immortal ascension 845.
