Background / History

Investigation in the Star Luo Empire

Following the destruction of the Duke’s Mansion and the death of Guardian Douluo Cheng Gang, Shrek Academy dispatched Yan Shaozhe and Xian Lin’er to investigate a suspected Super Douluo–level Evil Soul Master. Zhang Lexuan led the accompanying students, including Ma Xiaotao and Dai Yueheng. Their investigation brought them to a mountain range where Star Luo patrol soldiers had disappeared 8.

The group intercepted the fleeing Myriad Souls Douluo. Yan initially restrained Xian Lin’er from attacking, observing that the fugitive’s rapidly declining vitality made him an unlikely match for the reported attacker. When Electrolux arrived in pursuit, however, Myriad Souls Douluo attempted to implicate him as an ally 8.

Battle with Electrolux

Yan and Xian Lin’er continued treating Electrolux as an Evil Soul Master after he killed Myriad Souls Douluo. Yan activated his Bright Phoenix and Light Domain, only for Electrolux’s sacred light to suppress him. This shook his confidence: even his teacher Mu En’s light had not felt so terrifying. Zhang Lexuan’s subsequent report of an underground altar used for infant resentful-soul experiments renewed the confrontation 9.

Electrolux afflicted Yan with a Blood Curse and Withering Spell, draining his vitality while undead forces besieged the students. Yan and Xian Lin’er eventually combined their ninth Soul Skills in a desperate attempt to injure Electrolux and rescue their team. Electrolux’s Light Judgment erased their attacks, shattered Yan’s Phoenix True Body, and burned and ruptured his meridians 10 14.

Last Stand and Death

When Xian Lin’er began burning her essence blood, Yan reproached himself; he had intended to stay behind and cover the retreat. He scattered the undead surrounding the students and devastated the Bone Dragon fighting Zhang Lexuan and Han Ruoruo. He initially attempted to evacuate the survivors, but Zhang Lexuan’s plea persuaded him to return rather than abandon Xian Lin’er 15.

The two exhausted their foundations and attacked again. Electrolux invoked Necromantic God Descent, broke their combined assault, and killed Xian Lin’er. Yan then ordered Zhang Lexuan to take the students away, warning her not to repeat the same mistake 15 16.

Despite forcing his strength to rank 97 and unleashing Phoenix Descent, Yan could not withstand Soul Judgment. Shattered Star Douluo and Heavenly Fiend Douluo Huang Jinxu arrived and attempted to help, but his soul origin collapsed before they could save him. He died without an opportunity to self-detonate 16.

Aftermath

Mu En convened a Sea God Pavilion Meeting and appointed Cai Mei’er and Qian Duoduo as acting deans. To conceal the loss of both department heads, Shrek announced that Yan and Xian Lin’er had entered seclusion to attempt breakthroughs. The Star Luo Imperial Family agreed to suppress news of their deaths 16 17.

Appearance

• Hair: Thick and black before the battle; more than half turned gray under the Withering Spell, and it became completely white during his final confrontation 14 16.
• Avatar Fusion: His body grew to approximately five meters tall, surrounded by golden flames of light and bearing phoenix wings 9.
• Phoenix True Body: His ninth Soul Skill expanded his phoenix form to a wingspan approaching one hundred meters 14.

Personality

Yan initially displays more restraint than Xian Lin’er, pausing to assess Myriad Souls Douluo’s condition rather than immediately attacking. Nevertheless, he accepts the interpretation that Electrolux is an Evil Soul Master and relies on his light attribute to counter him. Electrolux acknowledges Yan’s control over his power but criticizes the firmness of his convictions 8 9.

His responsibility toward the students conflicts with his guilt and attachment to Xian Lin’er. Although he recognizes evacuation as the rational choice, Zhang Lexuan’s appeal draws him back into the battle. After Xian Lin’er dies, he insists that the survivors leave rather than remain for him 15 16.

Yan is also indulgent toward Ma Xiaotao. When Huo Yuhao confronts her about the deaths caused by her unstable Evil Fire, she briefly recognizes that her teacher has enabled her behavior before dismissing the thought as enemy provocation 13.

Bright Phoenix

A light-attribute Beast Martial Soul that supports Avatar Fusion and a large phoenix true body 9 14.
