Background / History

Hong Wuji traveled extensively through the primordial lands before the main events. He maintained a longstanding friendship with Gu Lie; their cultivation eventually diverged, with Hong Wuji reaching the Samsara Stage while Gu Lie remained at peak Death Profound 43 103.

After becoming Hall Master, Hong Wuji used his strength to suppress the Primordial Hall’s longstanding conflict between the Divine Ability Faction and Body Refinement Faction. This stopped the open struggle without eliminating the underlying disagreement 23.

When Xiang Yun awakened the Heavenly Tyrant Body, Xiang Huang brought him to Hong Wuji. Xiang Yun became his disciple, and Hong Wuji helped raise and personally guide him from childhood. Xiang Yun regarded him as both a teacher and a father 2 22 29.

Appearance

Hong Wuji is a bronze-skinned, muscular giant whose bulging muscles are compared to coiled horned dragons 22.

• Preferred clothing: Usually cultivates bare-chested and finds Daoist robes uncomfortable 22 42.
• Formal attire: Attempts to wear Daoist robes when meeting the Nine Heavens Taiqing Palace’s master, but later attends the Dao Sect exchange in the beast-hide-like Primordial Dragon Armor 22 30 45.
• Combat form: Reaches ten zhang in height during the Yuan Sect ambush, with dragon scales, claws, and bones covering his body 93 94.

Personality

Hong Wuji is boisterous and informal in private, particularly with Xiang Yun, but stern before the sect. After a factional brawl, he publicly rebuked those involved and sentenced them to seven days in the Primordial Pool without martial arts to resist its body-decaying effects. Once alone with Xiang Yun, he laughed and praised him for subduing the factions’ representatives 28.

He takes conspicuous pride in his disciple. Xiang Yun’s victory over Xiang Huang made him eager to visit other sects and boast; during the three-sect exchange, he loudly credited Xiang Yun with inventing the Battle Body Totem. His pride is tempered by concern: remembering Zhou Tong’s fate, he anticipated that the Yuan Sect would target Xiang Yun and began preparing countermeasures 38 66.

He trusts Xiang Yun without demanding explanations for every secret or inheritance. He also recognizes the limits of his own knowledge, agreeing to support unfamiliar plans when convinced that his disciple has reason to be confident 22 30.

Primordial Battle Body

Hong Wuji has cultivated the Primordial Hall’s body-refining Heavenly Martial Art to its eighth level 20.

• Provides the physical foundation for his exceptional close-combat strength 20 83.
• Can be combined with the Heavenly Horn Heaven-Overturning Art, rather than being overridden by its amplification 43 83.
• Remains below the ninth level, which is described as allowing a Samsara Stage practitioner to withstand a Reincarnation Stage expert’s strike head-on 20.

Three Heaven-Breaking Forms

Hong Wuji uses the Primordial Hall’s other Heavenly Martial Art, including its Heaven Breaking form 22 93.

A strength-amplifying art that Xiang Yun simplified from the Heavenly Horned Ant Precious Technique and passed to Hong Wuji through a jade slip 42 43.

• Stacks an additional amplification on top of the Primordial Battle Body 43.
• Its usable amplification depends on how much the practitioner’s physique can withstand 43.
• Lets Hong Wuji smash Ying Xuanzi’s Great Sky Demon Cloud Sword and force his way into close combat 83.
• Does not eliminate his endurance limitations: against Ren Yuanzi and Zhou Tong together, his Origin Energy dwindles and the amplification gradually weakens 94.

Close-Quarters Combat

Close combat is Hong Wuji’s strongest discipline. Before his new techniques, Ying Xuanzi considered him below himself, Yi Taiqing, and the Three Yuanzi, and roughly comparable to the Sword Sect’s leading expert 82 83.

• After learning the Heavenly Horn Heaven-Overturning Art, defeats Ying Xuanzi in a short, nonlethal exchange 83.
• Proves difficult for Yi Taiqing to suppress even after she employs several trump-card martial arts 84.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Resolving the Primordial Hall’s Factional Dispute

Renewed experiments in demon-bloodline fusion revive the Divine Ability Faction’s challenge to the Body Refinement Faction. Hong Wuji recognizes both the experiments’ failures and the possible consequences of adopting demon bloodlines on a large scale. When Xiang Yun proposes reproducing the principles behind his Tyrant Body Nine Forms, Hong Wuji promises the hall’s full support 29.

Xiang Yun’s successful Divine Ability Marks surprise him: Hong Wuji had initially only half believed the project would work. The resulting Battle Body Totems bridge the factions’ divide and address the hall’s shortage of ranged techniques, which Hong Wuji proudly announces during the exchange 34 66 84.

Building the Three-Sect Alliance

Concerned that the Yuan Sect will attack Xiang Yun, Hong Wuji cooperates with plans to unite the Primordial Hall, Dao Sect, and Nine Heavens Taiqing Palace. He also sends a Death Profound Realm elder to contact the Immortal Sacred Whale Clan 38 42.

His newly acquired strength becomes important when the leaders dispute who should lead the alliance. He defeats Ying Xuanzi in a brief bout and subsequently prevents Yi Taiqing from suppressing him, overturning their assumptions about his standing 82 83 84.

Yuan Sect Ambush

The Yuan Sect alters the return teleportation array to separate Hong Wuji and Xiang Yun from their companions. Hong Wuji is trapped in a formation reinforced by Zhou Tong’s Space Ancestral Talisman. His unexpected strength breaks the spatial blockade and leaves two Death Profound Realm opponents mangled, drawing Ren Yuanzi into the fight 87 93.

Ren Yuanzi’s attrition tactics and Zhou Tong’s spatial attacks gradually overwhelm him. When Ren Yuanzi attacks the arriving Xiang Yun, Hong Wuji immediately tries to intervene, but Zhou Tong blocks his path. Ying Xuanzi and Elder Qian arrive to turn the battle, and Hong Wuji ultimately helps restrain Zhou Tong rather than pursuing the escaping Ren Yuanzi 94 95 96.

Gu Family Visit and Later Preparations

After returning to the Primordial Hall, Hong Wuji receives Gu Lie and witnesses Xiang Yun effortlessly defeat Gu Yuntian. He also learns that the Immortal Sacred Whale Clan’s war with the Blood Demon Shark Clan may explain its failure to answer his message 98 103 104.

He reminds Xiang Yun of the approaching Martial Gathering Island gathering and warns him about further Yuan Sect attacks before his journey to the Otherworldly Demon Domain. Still puzzled by his disciple’s extraordinary growth, Hong Wuji considers investigating whether Xiang Yun has a special origin or inherited memories 105.
