History
Rivalry with the Senju and Internal Strife
The Uchiha’s rivalry with the Senju extended for more than a thousand years. At Konoha’s founding, they were the village’s second-largest shinobi clan; Yukito later recalled a time when the Uchiha and Senju were its only two great clans 10 62 317.
When Madara left Konoha, the clan refused to follow him, citing a desire for peace. His departure was followed by disputes over interests and beliefs, with the clan’s remaining Mangekyō users taking opposing sides. The ensuing internal conflict caused severe losses and weakened the Uchiha’s participation in the First Shinobi World War 8 263.
Kagami intervened to save Setsuna after his rebellion. Kagami’s father, Yukito, later blamed Madara for the clan’s decline and for ruining Kagami’s opportunity to become Hokage 61 62.
The Return of Wood Release
The Military Police investigated the aftermath of Uka Senju’s confrontation with opposing forces. An Uchiha jōnin who had previously seen Wood Release identified it, allowing the clan to confirm its return before Danzō did 61.
The discovery exposed divisions in the leadership. Yukito urged the clan to oppose Hiruzen Sarutobi’s interference in Senju affairs, while others considered exploiting the dispute and accepting Sarutobi’s offer of the Hokage position. Without another Madara or a current Mangekyō user, the Uchiha lacked an equivalent answer to the Senju’s restored bloodline 61 62.
The argument became violent when Yukito and Setsuna exchanged Fire Release techniques. Unable to impose authority through superior eyes, the clan head ended the confrontation by engulfing the entire meeting hall in Majestic Destroyer Flame 62.
Alliance and Political Maneuvering
The Uchiha eventually sided nominally with Sarutobi through an exchange of interests, without committing themselves completely. Yukito warned that trying to profit from the conflict without firmly choosing a course could trap the clan 199 272.
As the opposing factions expanded their forces, the Uchiha declined to join the proposed training plan and instead adopted a birth policy modeled on the Senju’s. They also approved Yukito’s proposal to cooperate with the Hyūga and neutral clans to pressure the Senju and Sarutobi into an early, limited battle 199.
Motohisa subsequently organized a joint approach by the Five Clans. Their proposal helped establish an annual contest at the Valley of the End, funded by Sarutobi, with additional labor fees awarded to the side with more survivors. Motohisa explained to Fugaku that the Uchiha could no longer afford to act as other clans’ weapons without receiving their share of the benefits 240.
When Sarutobi stationed personnel outside the Uchiha compound, Setsuna demanded an immediate attack. Motohisa rejected the proposal because they were still nominal allies, contacted neutral clans, and sent Hikaku to obtain information from the Hokage Building 272.
Open Conflict with the Senju
The Senju deliberately selected the Uchiha as targets after learning that their blood could reduce the energy required for Uka’s next enhancement. Toka ordered covert hunting and blood collection, then placed the Uchiha on the Senju Alliance’s kill list 286 287.
Yashiro confronted Uka over Maiko’s stolen eyes, revealing his newly awakened Mangekyō. Uka killed him and took his eyes. Motohisa offered to overlook Yashiro’s death if the Mangekyō were returned, but Uka refused and ordered an attack 289 290.
Motohisa and other Uchiha were captured. Reinforcements also suffered heavily because Uka’s Wood Release drained chakra upon contact, making the forest-covered battlefield particularly dangerous for them 291 292.
Destruction of the Compound
Uka later designated the Uchiha as the first target of the Senju’s all-out offensive. He attacked the compound from above with grenades and bombs, then struck three large shelters in the northwest with Wood Release. The attack divided the defenders and endangered their families 309 317.
Motohisa gathered nearly fifty three-tomoe users to confront him. Their coordinated elemental attacks initially cleared part of the Flower Tree World, but Uka’s regenerating Wood Golem, poisonous pollen, and further Wood Release attacks overwhelmed them. Mangekyō awakenings, including Anna’s and Yatomo’s, did not reverse the battle 318 319 324.
Uka rejected leaving survivors because the remaining Uchiha would bear grudges against him and the Senju. He harvested their Sharingan and ground the compound’s remains underground while preserving its hidden supplies. He subsequently reported that every Uchiha inside Konoha had been killed 325 328.
The victory was costly: Uka’s attacking force was reduced by roughly half even when lightly wounded personnel were included among those remaining, with more than a hundred severely wounded counted separately 328.
Aftermath
Uka collected over thirty pairs of three-tomoe eyes in the central fighting and approximately another dozen pairs around the perimeter. He also recovered three pairs of Mangekyō from the final battle and obtained secret ocular techniques from the clan’s leadership and hall 325 328.
The harvested Uchiha samples and Sharingan became materials for Uka’s Sage Eyes Supplement Potion. His resulting transformation gave him access to the Rinnegan and Susanoo 333 336.
The annihilation disrupted Madara’s plan to select a talented Uchiha as a future bearer of his eyes. Still alive outside the village, he ordered a search for candidates in small countries and resolved to retaliate indirectly against the Senju 337.
Organization and Customs
Leadership and Factions
- Clan head and senior council: The assembly consisted of the clan head and six other leaders. Its factional balance stood at 2:2:3 during Yukito’s final period of activity 61 199.
- Succession pressure: Yukito expected his death to shift that balance to 1:2:4, because the person best placed to inherit his seat belonged to an opposing faction 199.
- Authority through strength: Motohisa believed kindness was appropriate toward family and ordinary members, but Sharingan-bearing shinobi also required firm handling. His own three-tomoe eyes did not give him decisive authority over the elders 62 239.
- Military structure: The clan fielded numbered Large Units and Guard Large Units, with commanders assigned to defend the compound’s gates and flanks 317.
Family and Population Policy
- Marriage: Members were strictly required to marry within the clan 62.
- Birth incentives: The clan adopted increased bonuses, penalties, and clan benefits under a policy modeled on the Senju’s 199.
- Expected recovery: The resulting rise in births led the leadership to believe that another ten years could more than double their existing number of ninja 290.
- Civilian protection: Ordinary members occupied the safest northern residential district, while ninja and their families largely lived on the eastern and western sides 317.
Military Police Duties
- The Uchiha investigated incidents within Konoha through the Military Police, including the first confirmed evidence of Uka’s Wood Release 61.
- Fūei Uchiha investigated three deaths that Uka claimed responsibility for. Under the rules governing shinobi clan heads, Uka could settle the case through a fine rather than arrest 262.
- The fine was 100,000 ryō per victim; after confirming the circumstances, the Uchiha handled the scene 263.
Abilities and Skills
Sharingan
The Sharingan supplies observation, technique-copying, and hypnotic or genjutsu capabilities 10 89.
- Dynamic vision: Helps users track attacks, locate openings, and evade projectile or close-range assaults 89 90.
- Genjutsu: Yashiro uses the Hell Viewing Technique during his assessment match against Uka 92.
- Combat reputation: Conventional mission advice called for ordinary ninja to seek a three-to-one numerical advantage before confronting Sharingan users directly 10.
- Senju matchup: Senju physical strength and genjutsu resistance historically reduced the advantage of copying and illusion, leaving the Uchiha especially dependent on visual tracking 10.
- Outsider transplantation: Clan records describe rejection and other drawbacks in non-Uchiha bodies. The clan also hunted outsiders who obtained its eyes 325.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo
Exceptional emotional upheaval can produce powers beyond the ordinary Sharingan; Mito describes the clan’s strength as originating at the spiritual level 240 289 319.
- Yashiro’s abilities: Intangibility and blink-like relocation, as analyzed by Uka; the passage does not confirm Uka’s initial speculation that the technique is Kamui 289.
- Susanoo: Yashiro manifests purple ribs and arms, while Anna produces a twenty-meter Tengu Armor form 289 319.
- Immediate limitations: Newly awakened users can suffer severe pain and bleeding. Yashiro collapses after his incomplete Susanoo is broken 289.
- Potential among ordinary members: Mito considers gentle, unawakened Uchiha capable of exceptional development, not merely those who display early tomoe and obvious talent 240.
- Secret technique — Izanagi: Uka retrieves the clan’s renowned dōjutsu and gives a scroll with a pair of three-tomoe eyes to a Senju elder as a life-saving resource 328.
Fire Release and Elemental Ninjutsu
Fire Release is the clan’s best-known ninjutsu specialty 62 317.
- Signature techniques: Great Fireball and Phoenix Flower Jutsu 62.
- Advanced techniques: Majestic Destroyer Flame, Great Dragon Fire, Dragon Flame Song, and Flame Slash appear among the leadership and elite fighters 62 318 319.
- Combined attacks: Wind Release strengthens the clan’s flames, both during shelter defense and attempts to clear Uka’s forest 317 318.
- Broader repertoire: Elite members also demonstrate Lightning and Earth Release rather than relying exclusively on fire 318.
Weapons and Coordinated Combat
- Projectile expertise: Kunai, senbon, and shuriken intercept grenades that penetrate the defenders’ elemental barrage 317.
- Swordsmanship: Maiko combines a long blade with evasive movement; Motohisa uses a flaming blade to cut through encroaching vegetation 90 319.
- Formation fighting: Nearly fifty three-tomoe users divide into coordinated front, middle, and rear groups against the Wood Golem 319.
- Elite strength: The three-tomoe force confronting Uka during the compound battle consists of fighters described as at least elite jōnin 318.
