Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Modified, regenerating body 328 Has already remade his body into an “undying” form. His Yamata White Snake King transformation regenerates destroyed heads, although Oni energy can corrode that regeneration.
Purple Zombie 369 Deliberately absorbs the Flying Zombie’s death energy and corpse poison. Tsubasa stabilizes his meridians while Kaguya protects his consciousness during the six-hour transformation. A scanner records 90% soul integrity, 85% death-energy fusion, and independent consciousness. His Chakra becomes death energy and doubles in quantity.
Further zombie maturation; realm unnamed 391 White hair covers his body as his power grows. He reports major improvements in strength, speed, defense, and recovery, but has not yet reached Flying Zombie.
Flying Zombie 399 Breaks through after feeding on Ōtsutsuki blood, including that of a Star Level Second Stage Peak squad leader. His body becomes more flexible, corpse energy strengthens, and the white hair covering his body disappears.
Zombie King / Zombie Monarch; Immortal King-level power 453 465 472 Devours Ōtsutsuki Gō’s life essence, blood qi, energy, and law origin after Tsubasa restrains him. Withdraws to digest the breakthrough; his completed Zombie King advancement is subsequently confirmed. The later recollection calls this Zombie Monarch power.
High-Grade Zombie King 468 Ambushes the wounded Genshō on the Ōtsutsuki homeworld and consumes his life essence. His body toughens and his corpse aura changes from black to deep purple.
Peak Zombie King 493 Confirmed during the defense of Crimson Sky City. His corpse-qi domain supplies enough regeneration that three Ōtsutsuki Saints choose to seal him rather than continue trying to destroy him.
Peak Quasi-Saint 505 Refines Ōtsutsuki Sōichi’s Saint blood over a day and night. Tsubasa’s blood also fails to produce a Saint breakthrough; Orochimaru concludes that he needs a complete Saint origin and Great Dao laws, not blood alone.
Corpse Saint 521 Devours the core, spiritual energy, and life essence of a sealed Saint-level male insect. His breakthrough gives the Shinobi World another Saint-level combatant, with strength described as exceeding an ordinary Saint’s.

History

Family and Education

Before Orochimaru’s birth, Orochi tells fellow Senju clansmen that he and his girlfriend have already chosen the child’s name. During Konoha’s later rebuilding, an elderly woman fears that another war might take her grandson Orochimaru 2 134.

A Konoha storyteller later describes Orochimaru as the rumored descendant of a Senju branch family whose parents died as heroes during Konoha’s First War. The same account credits him with mastering Konoha’s various Ninjutsu by his graduation from Kage Academy. After graduating, he becomes Tian Uguisu’s disciple, signs a summoning contract with Ryūchi Cave, and rises to deputy minister of the Scientific Research Department 249.

Hokage Secretary and Konoha Defender

Orochimaru becomes one of five celebrated Hokage secretaries alongside Tsunade, Jiraiya, Hiruko, and Hiyori Hyuga. His appointment emphasizes his Ninjutsu expertise, research talent, and development of Living Corpse Reincarnation. Public reactions mix admiration for his apparent solution to mortality with unease over his methods and demeanor 248 249.

During the Oni invasion, his attempt to use Impure World Reincarnation fails because he cannot control the targets’ impure souls. He instead transforms into the Yamata White Snake King and fights an Oni king directly. Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya combine their attacks to destroy the king before it can self-destruct, leaving the three exhausted or injured 328.

After the fighting, the trio asks Tsubasa to return to a leaderless, unstable Konoha. Tsubasa subsequently reorganizes the Shinobi World into seven chakra-based factions and appoints Orochimaru as one of their Kage 339.

The Zombie Research Program

Orochimaru becomes fascinated by the captured Flying Zombie’s durability, self-repair, and ability to act without a soul. He proposes applying its body-modification principles to shinobi, while Tsubasa assigns him to discover methods of controlling it and directing its evolution. His experiments repeatedly damage the specimen and laboratory 364 365 367.

He eventually exposes himself to its death energy and corpse poison. Refusing purification, he asks Tsubasa to stabilize the poison’s spread and treats his own body as an experiment. With Tsubasa and Kaguya’s assistance, he survives as a zombie retaining both his soul and independent consciousness 369.

Orochimaru then turns toward cultivating low-level zombies in batches for war against the Ōtsutsuki. He also proposes testing them alongside the zombie puppet made from Isshiki. Although Tsunade and Jiraiya fear that the virus could eventually consume his mind, he reveals that Tsubasa has installed a runic restriction capable of controlling his body if that happens 369 370 391.

War and Scientific Development

During the first Ōtsutsuki invasion, Orochimaru fights alongside zombie Isshiki and the Flying Zombie. Their corpse qi suppresses the enemy’s regeneration, while drinking Ōtsutsuki blood accelerates Orochimaru’s own growth. The three pursue the invaders when Ōtsutsuki Retsu orders a retreat 399 400.

His research also contributes to the Shinobi World’s expansion into space. With Sasori, he demonstrates rune super alloy steel capable of withstanding a Golden Core attack. With Himiko, he deciphers the God Tree spaceship core and adapts it for spacecraft propulsion and Ōtsutsuki-energy detection 421.

On Mars, his Flying Zombie Corps joins the vanguard against Ōtsutsuki Ran’s army. Orochimaru personally feeds on enemy soldiers, collects corpses for research, and consumes God Wood spaceship wreckage as his power approaches another bottleneck 427 432 433 435.

Homeworld Infiltration and the “Deserter” Reputation

After attaining Zombie King power, Orochimaru secretly pursues the retreating Ōtsutsuki. He stows away aboard a God Tree spaceship, passes through the homeworld’s planetary barrier, and infiltrates a healing hall. There, he consumes the wounded Genshō and converts Sekigan and Anzei into zombie servants 465 468.

He spreads the infection through settlements, instructing his servants to avoid alerting neighboring villages. From the memories of a Peak Domain Level zombie, he learns that the Ōtsutsuki’s planetary harvesting serves their ambition to reach Saint Level. That realm’s connection to the universe’s fundamental laws becomes his next research obsession 469 474.

His disappearance creates a very different account in the Shinobi World. Over ten years, he becomes widely condemned as a coward who abandoned Tsubasa after gaining power; textbooks and a warning-hall portrait reinforce the accusation. Tavern patrons also circulate allegations of secret human experimentation and treason, but these claims are presented as public rumor rather than established events 471.

Shikamaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya dispute the idea that fear drove him away. They remember his willingness to challenge Domain Level enemies and speculate that he infiltrated the Ōtsutsuki planet in pursuit of its secrets—correctly identifying his destination despite having no contact with him 471 472.

Sealing and Rescue

On the homeworld, Orochimaru initially evades Saint attacks by scattering pieces of himself throughout corpse-qi nodes. Though trapped within their barrier, he continues feeding and researching. The Saints’ destruction of his clones eventually exhausts him and threatens his remaining bodies 470 491.

At Crimson Sky City, Ōtsutsuki Enmu, Konkei, and Sōichi combine purification, soul attacks, and spatial confinement against him. Unable to permanently destroy his regenerating body, they bind his soul and flesh inside a cocoon-like seal 493.

Tsubasa secures Orochimaru and Tian Yu’s release by exchanging the captured Sōichi. Orochimaru returns to the Shinobi World described as a hero rather than a deserter, but remains sealed. At his suggestion, Tsubasa destroys his body together with the seals; Orochimaru reforms from his origin corpse qi while Tsubasa and Tian Yu break the last three shackles 498 499 503 504.

Corpse Saint and Final Battle

After Saint blood fails to complete his next breakthrough, Orochimaru continues collaborating with Tsunade on pill refinement. He later helps process Saint-level Insect Race remains, analyzing their bodies, extracting energy cores, and refining their armor for weapons 505 506 519.

Rather than taking a Holy Insect Pill, he consumes a sealed Saint-level male insect and emerges as a Corpse Saint. He subsequently fights Saint-level insect kings alongside Tsubasa, treating their battles as both a contest and an opportunity to devour stronger enemies 521 527.

The Insect God proves far beyond either of them. Badly wounded, they lure it into the Ōtsutsuki Star Region, hoping the God of Ōtsutsuki will intervene. Trapped amid the gods’ battle, Orochimaru pushes Tsubasa away from an incoming claw and takes the blow himself. The Insect God then strikes his true body with a beam that defeats his regeneration, destroys his flesh, and seals away his soul until nothing remains 532 533 534.

Appearance

Orochimaru initially has delicate, handsome features, pale skin, black hair, and serpentine pupils. His appearance changes substantially as he modifies his body and advances along the zombie path 249 328 339 367.

  • Human appearance: A lean frame and pale arms; shown wearing a black robe, with golden slit pupils and a habit of licking his lips 328 339.
  • Yamata White Snake King: A nearly hundred-meter-long, eight-headed serpent with black scales, vertical pupils, and dark green venom 328.
  • Newly transformed zombie: Bluish-purple skin, a cold body, and faint purple markings around his pupils 369.
  • Before Flying Zombie advancement: Conspicuous white hair covers his body; he later appears with long snow-white hair, deathly pale skin, prominent veins, and fangs 391 398.
  • Flying Zombie: The white body hair disappears, leaving an outwardly ordinary-looking body surrounded by black energy 399.
  • Corpse Saint: Stands over three zhang tall, with metallic dark-gold skin, long black hair, and ghostly green soul flames in his eyes 521.

Personality

Orochimaru pursues immortality as the foundation for an endless search for power and truth. He approaches even potentially fatal bodily changes with scientific excitement, accepting the possibility of soul destruction as an experimental risk. His willingness to experiment on himself is matched by patience, disguise, and a readiness to spend decades pursuing a goal 369 391 472 474.

His zombie transformation diminishes ordinary human feelings and sensations, but does not erase his independence or ambition. In battle, his appetite for powerful blood and origins becomes openly predatory: he regards Ōtsutsuki enemies as nourishment and research material. He is also competitive, repeatedly measuring himself against Tsubasa and challenging him to contests against Saint-level enemies 391 399 521 527.

Despite his ruthlessness, he retains enduring bonds with his companions. He accepts Tsunade and Jiraiya’s support, continues defending the Shinobi World, and ultimately shields Tsubasa from the Insect God. Even while dying, he expresses regret at being unable to investigate divine power rather than fear of death 369 534.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

Orochimaru develops this technique at Kage Academy. Public accounts describe it as an SSS-rank Ninjutsu that enables repeated bodily rebirth 248 249.

  • Merges his soul and Chakra into his blood, allowing a single transplanted drop to produce a cloned body 249.
  • Transfers his soul into a clone to obtain a new life 249.
  • Can seize and devour the souls of people who survive receiving his bite and Cursed Seal, repairing damage caused by soul transfer 249.
  • Limitations: Soul transfers damage the soul, and each cloned body lives for only three years at the time of the technique’s public description 249.

Snake Techniques and Ryūchi Cave Summoning

His training under Tian Uguisu includes a summoning contract with Ryūchi Cave. He uses snakes for attacks, evasion, restraint, and bodily reconstruction 249 399 400 532.

  • Eight-Headed Orochi summoning beast: Cloned from his flesh and blood and that of the White Snake Sage. It possesses his intelligence and is reportedly capable of fighting a Sage-level expert 249.
  • Yamata White Snake King transformation: Provides eight regenerating heads, powerful bites, and corrosive venom 328.
  • Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Launches venomous snakes from his sleeves, creating openings for allied attacks 399.
  • Snake dispersal: Splits into numerous small snakes to infiltrate an enemy’s blind spot or evade attacks, including a spatial blade 399 400.
  • Eight-Headed Orochi phantom: At Corpse Saint level, bites and restrains Saint-level insects while injecting corpse poison 527.

Zombie Physiology and Regeneration

Unlike the original Flying Zombie, Orochimaru retains a soul, independent thought, and the ability to use Ninjutsu. He combines his existing techniques with zombie power 369 391.

  • Possesses enhanced strength, speed, durability, and recovery; by his fight with Ōtsutsuki Gen, his body is compared to a top-tier defensive Immortal artifact 391 453.
  • His altered mental structure greatly reduces the effectiveness of many illusions designed for living minds 453.
  • Reconstructs his body from corpse qi; at Peak Zombie King, his domain supplies continuous regeneration unless its corpse qi is purified completely 493 504.
  • At Corpse Saint, gains control over death and the ability to revive the dead as powerful corpse soldiers 521.
  • Limitations: Saint-level seals can suppress his power, erode his fused soul, and prevent healing. The Insect God’s divine energy ultimately defeats his regeneration and destroys him completely 503 534.

Devouring and Evolution

His zombie cultivation advances by consuming life essence, energy, and increasingly powerful origins 399 453 505.

  • Drinks Ōtsutsuki blood to increase his corpse energy and overcome cultivation bottlenecks 399 400.
  • Uses venomous snakes to drain vitality and Chakra, simultaneously healing injuries and strengthening himself 432.
  • Can consume law origins from Domain Level enemies 453.
  • Identifies complete Saint origins and Great Dao laws as necessary for his own Saint-level transformation; Saint blood alone supplies energy without the required qualitative change 505.
  • Faces dangerous backlash while digesting Saint-level material, requiring repeated neutralization of its violent power 521.

Corpse Qi, Poison, and Zombie Control

Orochimaru develops zombie forces specifically to exploit the Ōtsutsuki’s vulnerability to death energy 369 391.

  • Corpse qi suppresses Ōtsutsuki wound regeneration and counters their Chakra 369 400.
  • His corpse poison can be delivered through claws, fangs, and snake attacks; his corpse qi can also corrode domains 453.
  • Converts victims into obedient zombies and directs them to spread the transformation 468 469.
  • Forbidden Technique: Dead Demon Devouring: His own zombie-powered technique, distinct from the Reaper Death Seal. It creates corpse-aura chains that bind targets, erode life essence, and attach to their souls 468.
  • Safeguard: Tsubasa’s runic restriction can take control of his body if he loses his mind, reducing him to a controlled zombie puppet 391.
  • Battlefield restriction: Tsubasa’s domain suppresses his corpse qi, forcing him to favor speed, defense, and close-range attacks over large-scale death-qi spells 453.

Scientific Research, Alchemy, and Forging

Orochimaru’s research spans cloning, soul transfer, body modification, materials engineering, spacecraft systems, and biological energy extraction 249 364 421 519.

  • Co-develops rune super alloy steel with Sasori and deciphers the God Tree spaceship core with Himiko 421.
  • Proposes refining dangerous Saint blood into pills suitable for Immortal King-level experts 506.
  • Demonstrates precise control of Southern Brightness Li Fire during pill refinement 506.
  • Uses Corpse Jutsu to analyze insect genes and physical structures, extract energy cores, and process armor into weapon materials 519.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru attempts to use Impure World Reincarnation during the Oni invasion, but the impure souls resist control and the corpses show signs of backlash. He abandons the attempt in favor of direct combat 328.

Equipment

  • Black dagger — Used to stab a Saint-level male insect king in its compound eye while the Eight-Headed Orochi phantom restrains it 527.

  • Tian Uguisu — Teacher after his Kage Academy graduation; associated with his entry into Ryūchi Cave’s traditions 249.
  • Tsubasa — Patron, research collaborator, rescuer, and eventual trusted comrade. Their initially utilitarian alliance develops through years of shared battles; Orochimaru ultimately shields him from the Insect God 365 369 498 504 534.
  • Tsunade — Longtime teammate, friend, medical critic, and research partner. She condemns his self-experimentation but supports him and refuses to accept his reputation as a coward 369 472 519.
  • Jiraiya — Fellow member of the Konoha Sannin and a teasing but loyal friend. He offers research supplies, warns that he would stop Orochimaru if he became a threat, and later defends his courage 369 391 472.
  • Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — Protects his sea of consciousness with the Power of All Creation during his zombie transformation 369.
  • Sasori — Collaborator in rune alloy development 421.
  • Himiko — Collaborator in deciphering and adapting the God Tree spaceship core 421.
  • Shikamaru Nara — Questions the deserter narrative and analyzes Orochimaru’s disappearance according to his established pursuit of immortality and truth 471 472.
  • Sekigan and Anzei — Converted into the Red Zombie King and Dark Zombie King; serve him in building a zombie force on the Ōtsutsuki homeworld 468 469.
