Background / History
Poison Backlash and the Medicinal Garden
Dugu Bo had spent half his life studying poison and independently refined an inner pill from the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor’s power. Despite this achievement, his own Poison Qi damaged his body and penetrated his vital organs. Before meeting Xiao Yan, he believed he had only a few years left to live 24 25 29.
He maintained a private herb garden around an extreme-cold and extreme-heat spring deep within Sunset Forest. Yue Guan considered his collection of heavenly and earthly treasures potentially unmatched on the continent, making it the destination of Xiao Yan’s search for pill ingredients 22 23.
Defeat and Negotiations
When Yue Guan brought Xiao Yan to the garden, Dugu Bo fought his longtime rival using his Martial Soul Avatar. Concern for the herbs disrupted his concentration, allowing Yue Guan to destroy the avatar. Xiao Yan’s two-colored Fire Lotus then interrupted Dugu Bo’s attempt to reactivate it, leaving him badly injured. Xiao Yan persuaded Yue Guan to spare him and proposed a trade instead 23.
Dugu Bo initially dismissed Xiao Yan’s claims about treating poison. His attitude changed after the Netherworld Poison Flame resisted his poison and Xiao Yan accurately described his recurring symptoms. Xiao Yan offered a method that could save both Dugu Bo and his descendants, demanding permanent allegiance to Spirit Hall from the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor lineage in return 24.
Dugu Bo resisted placing his family’s survival entirely in Xiao Yan’s hands. The promise of independently usable Heavenly Flame Child Flames helped resolve that objection. He withdrew poison gas hidden among the herbs, permitted Xiao Yan to use the garden during treatment, and ultimately accepted their partnership 25.
Supporting Xiao Yan
While preparing for treatment, Dugu Bo witnessed Xiao Yan awaken his Dragon-Phoenix form. He interpreted it as a third Martial Soul, and his astonishment at Xiao Yan’s talent weakened his remaining resistance to supporting him 27.
When Xiao Yan’s strength began to fail during cultivation, Dugu Bo supplied Soul Power and two opposing Immortal Herbs from the spring. He regarded the assistance as an investment, but also feared Spirit Hall’s retaliation if Xiao Yan died in his garden. After Xiao Yan survived, Dugu Bo reminded him that Yanyan still needed his help 28.
Recovery and Entry into Spirit Hall
During the Poison Pill Method, Dugu Bo’s accumulated Poison Qi manifested as a hostile Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor phantom. He warned Xiao Yan to retreat, but Xiao Yan fought the phantom while Dugu Bo forced the remaining poison into the pill. Its destruction allowed the procedure to succeed. Dugu Bo recovered his health, reached level 95, and came to regard Xiao Yan sincerely as his benefactor rather than merely a trading partner 29.
Afterward, the two studied the garden’s Immortal Herbs and compiled an illustrated reference book. Xiao Yan supplied the promised Child Flames, fire-control instructions, and resources needed to preserve the treatment within the Dugu Family. Dugu Bo then traveled to Spirit Hall, formally presented himself to Bibi Dong as a guest elder, and delivered Xiao Yan’s gifts 30.
Dugu Bo also offered Yue Guan a singular velvet sky chrysanthemum. Yue Guan proposed one final duel to settle their longstanding grievances, and Dugu Bo agreed. Bibi Dong designated it a friendly exhibition announcing his arrival in Spirit Hall; the supplied account does not establish the result 30.
Appearance
- Before treatment: An emaciated elderly man with green hair and beard, thin hands, and deep wrinkles 25 29.
- After treatment: His hair and beard turn black, his body becomes sturdy, and his complexion takes on a healthy, ruddy appearance 29.
- Clothing: Wears green robes and black armor when entering the Pope’s Palace 30.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, sharp-tempered, and reluctant to acknowledge a junior’s superiority. He initially treats Xiao Yan with disdain and clings to the bearing of a poison expert even after defeat. His pride also impedes his research: after helping identify the garden’s herbs, he admits that maintaining a Titled Douluo’s airs had kept him from studying them properly 23 24 30.
His caution and family loyalty temper that arrogance. He refuses to entrust the Dugu Family’s future to an arrangement that would leave it dependent on another person, and he suppresses his desire for the Bodhi Heart fragment rather than recklessly attempting to seize it. Once Xiao Yan saves him, his gratitude becomes genuine, though he finds a deep bow and shared wine easier than directly thanking a junior 25 29 30.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor
Dugu Bo’s extreme-yin Martial Soul supports his poison cultivation and serpent transformation 23 30.
- Martial Soul Avatar: Transforms into a massive emerald-scaled serpent 23.
- Poison-enhanced strikes: Concentrates deadly poison into his tail, injuring Yue Guan even while enduring the latter’s attacks 23.
- Recovery limitation: After his avatar is broken, he cannot immediately restore it; Xiao Yan exploits the vulnerable activation process to interrupt his Seventh Soul Skill 23.
Poison Arts
Dugu Bo’s poison arts are described as unrivaled under heaven even before his advancement to level 95 30.
- Group combat: Spreads poisonous gas and excels at fighting multiple opponents 23 30.
- Battlefield support: Before treatment, his poison could distract Titled Douluo even when it could not seriously injure them, creating openings for allies 30.
- Improved lethality: After treatment, his poison becomes potent enough to threaten Titled Douluo directly 30.
- Concealed poison: Hides emerald-green poison gas among the medicinal herbs and withdraws it during negotiations 25.
- Resistance limits: Cannot neutralize the Netherworld Poison Flame with his own poison. He must use his full strength and Martial Soul Avatar to expel it inside poisoned blood 24.
Inner Pill and Poison Pill Method
Dugu Bo independently developed a blue-green inner pill containing roughly half his Poison Qi. Xiao Yan recognized it as an early foundation for the Poison Pill Method 25 29.
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Dugu Bo’s inner pill | Provides the foundation refined into the completed Poison Pill 29. |
| Three Heavenly Flames | Gather, suppress, and compress the Poison Qi 25 29. |
| Bodhisattva Body Transformation Saliva | Assists pill formation and restores vitality to poison-damaged tissues 29. |
| Demon Poison Dragon Scorpion essence blood and Soul Ring | Form a preliminary pill that is fused with Dugu Bo’s inner pill; the beast must be at least a thousand years old 25 29. |
| Demon Poison Dragon Scorpion Soul Bone | Optional enhancement proposed by Xiao Yan; its use is not confirmed 25. |
- Completed effect: Compresses the harmful Poison Qi into a controllable pill, turns it into cultivation power, and ends Dugu Bo’s backlash 29.
- Transferability: Xiao Yan gives him the method and supporting resources so the Dugu Family can continue using it 30.
- Child Flame restriction: His extreme-yin Martial Soul conflicts with the extreme-yang Heavenly Flames. He can control their Child Flames externally, but forcibly absorbing them risks fire poison 30.
Medicinal and Theoretical Knowledge
- Herbal research: Combines his experience in poison and medicine with Xiao Yan’s alchemical knowledge to identify nearly every herb in the garden within a day 30.
- Soul Ring lore: Recognizes a possible resemblance between Xiao Yan’s unusual rings and ancient Blood Essence Soul Rings described in Heaven Dou royal records, while noting that they do not function identically 28.
Equipment / Items
- Wishful Hundred Treasure Purse: Used to store a jade-boxed Immortal Herb selected for Yan 30.
- Three Heavenly Flame Child Flames: Supplied by Xiao Yan in jade bottles, with control marks enabling their use by Dugu Family members 30.
- Fire-control scroll: Xiao Yan’s handwritten collection of fire-control methods 30.
- Illustrated Immortal Herb reference: Records medicinal effects, uses, precautions, and illustrations; compiled through Dugu Bo and Xiao Yan’s joint research 30.
- Cultivated Bodhi Heart fragment: Planted at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well to produce an ongoing supply of Bodhisattva Body Transformation Saliva after several years 30.
Relationships
- Xiao Yan — Initially an intruder and bargaining opponent, later his benefactor and Spirit Hall’s Holy Son. Their relationship develops into affectionate bickering and genuine trust; Xiao Yan eventually considers Dugu Bo part of his family 23 25 29 30 32.
- Yue Guan / Chrysanthemum Douluo — Rival of half a lifetime. Despite their hostile exchanges, Dugu Bo acknowledges that Yue Guan had not truly sought to kill him in their earlier disputes. They agree to a final match intended to settle their grievances 23 30.
- Bibi Dong — Pope of Spirit Hall and his new superior. His recruitment strengthens her forces, while her authority also discourages him from harming Xiao Yan 25 28 30.
- Yanyan — A family member whose danger from poison backlash weighs heavily on him. Her need for treatment is a central reason he accepts Xiao Yan’s help 24 28.
