Background / History

Luo Tianshen practiced martial arts in his youth on a stone platform at the center of a lake. He also traveled across the Western Heaven Continent, recording the places he visited on a jade-scroll map that he later gave Xiao Yan 28 48.

His hostility with Xue Ku stretches back at least sixty years: he personally witnessed Xue Ku seal his cave residence before entering seclusion. Xue Ku remembers suffering more defeats to Luo Tianshen’s Spirit Immobilization than to all his other opponents combined 46.

Before meeting Xiao Yan, Luo Tianshen was in secluded cultivation. The Blood God Clan had heard that an old injury had flared up and spent the following half-year provoking the Luo God Clan to test its strength 8 21.

Appearance

Luo Tianshen is a short, thin elder whose plain clothing contrasts sharply with his position as clan patriarch 24 46.

  • Hair: Graying 46.
  • Face: Deeply wrinkled, with cloudy eyes 43 47.
  • Hands: Thin and bony, with calloused palms 15 46.
  • Clothing: Habitually wears a drab gray cloth robe, described as washed pale with age 24 46.
  • Bearing: Often stands or walks with his hands clasped behind his back 15 30 48.

Personality

Luo Tianshen is restrained and economical with words. At the clan banquet, his simple declaration that Xiao Yan was “my guest” changes the entire hall’s attitude toward the outsider. His anger is similarly controlled: he calmly recounts the Blood God Clan’s crimes before striking Xue Ku and mutilating Xue Li 24 46.

He values courage, judgment, and ability over an outsider’s origins. After questioning why Xiao Yan risked himself for Luo Lan, he teaches him a clan method and guarantees his safety. He also rebukes Luo Cheng for seeing only potential trouble rather than the significance of Xiao Yan’s medicine 15.

His affection is often expressed through practical help rather than open sentiment. He secretly paid a stallholder to feed Luo Lan as a child, personally tended Xiao Yan through three days of unconsciousness, and supported Xiao Yan’s departure without asking him to stay. He likewise permits Luo Lan to travel, arguing that clan members will become useless if they remain sheltered in the city 43 47 48 50.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Energy Control

  • Stops Xiao Yan’s flame-covered punch with one finger and returns its force with exact precision 28.
  • Uses less than a tenth of his strength during their sparring session, relying on fine control of Spiritual Energy and Spirit Marks 29.
  • Defeats Xue Li with a single finger and later severs his arm with a brief flash of white light 21 46.
  • Immobilizes Xue Ku’s Spiritual Energy before striking him through buildings, the city wall, and into a distant mountain 46.

Spirit Immobilization

A secret Luo God Clan technique that arrests the flow of surrounding Spiritual Energy through a circular Spirit Mark 28.

  • Halts the energy sustaining Xiao Yan’s movement afterimages, exposing his real body 28.
  • Suspends Xue Ku’s blood palm three feet from Xiao Yan, preventing it from descending 46.
  • Requires Spirit Mark mastery beyond Xiao Yan’s ability to reproduce, even after he understands its principle 30.

Defensive Spirit Marks

  • Creates an invisible barrier three feet from his body during training 29.
  • Uses the marks flowing across it to redirect hundreds of flame strands into the surrounding lake 29.

Assimilation Knowledge

Luo Tianshen recognizes Dou Qi and understands the Assimilation Tribulation faced by cultivators arriving from Lower Planes 14.

  • Identifies the flaw in Xiao Yan’s attempt to guide Spiritual Energy through only one meridian 14.
  • Teaches the Reverse Scale Spirit-Guiding Method, which protects the cultivation core while stripping away and rebuilding the surrounding power 15.
  • Warns that misidentifying the core can destroy the practitioner’s cultivation and that inscribing the scales causes extreme pain 15.
  • Recognizes Xiao Yan’s independently discovered third layer as the method’s final layer, previously recorded by the ancestors but never mastered 29.

Soul Perception

  • Assesses Xiao Yan’s unusually stable and powerful soul, judging it suitable for inscribing reverse scales 15.
  • Silently extends his Soul Power throughout Blood God City and discovers that Xue Ku’s sealed cave is empty 46.

Meridian Treatment

  • Uses his own Spiritual Energy to tend Xiao Yan’s meridians every two hours during three days of unconsciousness 47.
  • Remains in the room throughout the treatment and becomes noticeably paler from the exertion 47.

Cultivation Limitations

  • Admits that he has not even reached the threshold of cultivating the Luo God Dharma Body. Only the clan’s ancestor is known to have manifested its complete form 43.

Equipment / Items

  • Luo Shen Token: A palm-sized white jade token depicting a sword-bearing goddess. Luo Tianshen uses it to part the Luo River and open the Luo River Abyss 30.
  • Western Heaven Continent map: A green jade scroll recording places he visited in his youth, including Ten Thousand Serpents Marsh. He gives it to Xiao Yan before his departure 48.
  • Smaller Luo Shen Token: A farewell gift to Xiao Yan, bearing a goddess on one side and the character “Luo” on the other. Unlike the token used at the river, it cannot open the abyss or command the Luo Shen Guard 48.
  • Blood jade evidence: Temporarily carries the jade Xiao Yan seized from Xue Shi, bearing Xue Li’s imprint and another, stronger imprint, when traveling to confront the Blood God Clan 43.

Relationships

  • Xiao Yan — Guest, pupil, and protected ally. Luo Tianshen teaches him assimilation techniques, helps him establish his standing within the clan, and eventually calls him “a junior of my family” 15 21 28 46.
  • Luo Lan — Great-nephew. Luo Lan both fears his discipline and takes pride in his strength; Luo Tianshen quietly provides for him and later permits him to travel outside the city 8 15 43 50.
  • Luo Cheng — Subordinate elder whom he orders to guard Xiao Yan. After learning that Luo Cheng concealed the hostage threat, he sends him to kneel in the ancestral hall 15 18.
  • Luo Yan — Clan elder whose treatment he entrusts to Xiao Yan after the clan’s alchemists fail to cure the Blood Fiend Palm 21.
  • A Heng and her grandfather — Civilians under his protection. He arranges accommodation for her recovering grandfather in the residence’s outer compound, with Luo Su providing care 28.
  • Xue Li — Enemy responsible for attacks on his clansmen. Luo Tianshen publicly humiliates him, later severs his arm for Luo Shi’s death, and leaves Luo Wen’s death as an unsettled debt 21 46.
  • Xue Ku — Long-standing enemy whose attempt to kill Xiao Yan prompts Luo Tianshen’s decisive intervention 46.
