Power Progression
Assimilation percentages describe the conversion of Xiao Yan’s Dou Qi into Spiritual Energy, not a named cultivation realm 16 25 47.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dou Di; Emperor Realm Soul | 1 2 | Already attained before entering the plane passage. Leads five Dou Di toward the Great Thousand World. |
| Assimilation Tribulation; severe loss of strength | 3 4 5 | Spiritual Energy invades his body and clashes with his Dou Qi. His remaining strength falls below one-tenth of his former peak; circulating the Flame Mantra worsens the conflict. |
| First Reverse Scale layer: Core — 10% assimilation | 16 19 | Identifies and protects his fire origin with 360 reverse scales. Produces pale-golden Spiritual Energy retaining the Flame Mantra’s heat, devouring properties, and amplification. |
| Second layer: Fire Mark — 20% assimilation | 25 | Adds flame patterns that guide the Flame Mantra’s devouring power. Assimilation speed more than doubles. |
| Third layer: Connection — 50% assimilation | 29 | Develops the final layer of Luo Tianshen’s method through sparring. Three interlocking layers contain 360, 720, and 1,080 scales; his energy begins resonating with the world. |
| 60% assimilation | 42 | Reported as his starting point before developing the fourth layer; the exact moment he reached it is not shown. |
| Fourth layer: Fusion — 80% assimilation | 42 | Creates a layer beyond the original method. Uses Mysterious Yin Ice Flame to balance his remaining Dou Qi’s yang nature, bringing Dou Qi and Spiritual Energy into harmony over three days. |
| Temporary return of Dou Di power | 45 | Burns his remaining 20% Dou Qi origin against Xue Ku. Briefly recovers a shadow of his former power, but exhausts his Dou Qi and leaves only a rice-grain-sized fire-origin spark. |
| Complete assimilation | 47 | Realizes that burning away the final Dou Qi shell freed his true origin. His new flame preserves the Flame Mantra, Emperor Flame, ice flame, Reverse Scales, and the world’s amplification properties. |
Background / History
Life on the Dou Qi Continent
Xiao Yan’s early cultivation decline made him an object of ridicule within the Xiao Clan; Xun’er continued supporting him when others looked down on him. Under Yao Lao’s instruction, he learned alchemy and cultivated the Flame Mantra, which evolved from Yellow Tier to Di Class through devouring Heavenly Flames 5 8 12 50.
He eventually reached Dou Di and saved the Central Plains from Hun Tiandi. With no opponent remaining on his continent and no visible path beyond its cultivation limit, he opened a plane passage to seek further advancement 1 43 45.
Arrival and the Assimilation Tribulation
Xiao Yan entered the passage with Xun’er, Cai Lin, Gu Yuan, and Zhu Kun. Along the way, he exchanged a friendly salute with an unnamed black-robed traveler whose vertical eye and Chaos Light impressed him. A subsequent attack by a demonic hand ended with the five companions destroying it, but the resulting disturbances triggered a plane storm that scattered them 1 2 3.
Four Soul Jades confirmed that his companions survived. Xiao Yan himself fell into the Great Thousand World, where Spiritual Energy began forcibly assimilating his Dou Qi. Unable to tear open the unusually stable space or arrest his fall with his wings, he crashed near Bluestone Village and was rescued by A Heng and her grandfather 3 4.
After stabilizing his injuries, he entered Luo Shen City and began studying its currency, Spirit Marks, and alchemy. His first attempt to guide assimilation through a single mark failed. Luo Tianshen identified the Assimilation Tribulation and taught him the Reverse Scale Spirit-Guiding Method, allowing him to preserve his fire origin while rebuilding his cultivation 6 12 14 15 16.
Establishing a Place in Luo Shen City
Xiao Yan befriended Luo Lan after confronting him for taking food from a child. Through Luo Lan, he reached the Luo Pill Pavilion, where Elder Qin bought five of his pills for 1,100 drops of Supreme Spirit Liquid and granted him guest-elder privileges 8 10.
His refusal to surrender his detoxifying pills and formula made him Blood Butcher’s enemy. When Blood Butcher kidnapped A Heng and her grandfather, Xiao Yan went alone to Sunset Glow Slope, defeated his followers, and crippled him. He deliberately spared Blood Butcher so that he would remember his actions 10 18 19 20.
Xiao Yan secured broader respect by creating the Fire Pattern Pill and curing Luo Yan’s longstanding blood fiend poison. He later exposed Luo Ping’s use of Blood Erosion Powder to sabotage the patients’ medicine, cleared his own name, and treated Luo Chuan 23 24 26 27.
Luo River Abyss Expedition
After developing his third Reverse Scale layer, Xiao Yan learned that Xiao Yi needed an extreme-yin flame to restore her balance. He joined the Luo God Clan’s expedition into the Luo River Abyss to obtain the Mysterious Yin Ice Flame 29 30 31.
In the Cold Abyss, he rescued Luo Lan from the Abyss Scale Flood Dragon and subsequently helped him reach the Divine Soul Realm. Discovering evidence that the Blood God Clan had deliberately provoked the beast, he warned Luo Feng before descending alone to the seventh layer 33 34 35.
Xiao Yan obtained a wisp of ice flame for Xiao Yi, then returned when Luo Feng’s life-bound talisman began cracking. He destroyed Xue Shi’s Blood Sacrifice Array, rescued Luo Xiao, and defeated the ambushers with his ruler techniques and a reconstructed Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus. The battle badly injured his hands and left him unconscious 36 38 39 40.
Blood Domain and Departure
While Luo Tianshen was away confronting the Blood God Clan, Xue Ku and Xue Li attacked Luo Shen City. Outmatched by the Lower Earthly Sovereign Xue Ku, Xiao Yan burned his remaining Dou Qi origin, wounded him, and tore open the Blood Domain’s canopy. His power expired before he could win; Luo Tianshen’s intervention stopped the killing blow 43 44 45 46.
During recovery, Xiao Yan completed assimilation. Before leaving, he shared medicinal recipes, visited the graves of Luo Shi and Luo Wen, and gave A Heng a cultivation method tailored to her physique. Luo Tianshen supplied a map and Luo Shen Token, warning him about the Xuanming Serpent Clan’s southern territory 47 48 49.
Luo Lan obtained permission to accompany him. After farewells at the southern gate, the two set out toward the crimson wilderness, following Cai Lin’s flickering Soul Jade 50.
Appearance
- Face and eyes: Delicate features and dark eyes; his injuries frequently leave him pale 5 20 43.
- Clothing: Wears coarse cloth during his early days in Luo Shen City and green robes during the Blood Domain attack 7 44.
- Wings: Possesses Purple Cloud Wings and jade-colored bone wings. The latter turn golden-red while he burns his Dou Qi origin 3 45.
- Temporary battle transformation: Golden-red flames burn in his pupils during his brief resurgence of Dou Di power 45.
Personality
Xiao Yan repays kindness with concrete action. He risks his life for A Heng and her grandfather despite his incomplete recovery, and later leaves A Heng resources suited to her cultivation. His protection of the bullied child reflects his memory of being mocked during his own cultivation decline 4 8 18 49.
He is persistent and analytical rather than discouraged by failure. After repeated cauldron explosions, he studies the residue and changes his approach; against Luo Tianshen, he treats each defeat as a chance to understand the world’s rules 22 23 28 29.
His judgment of others can change. He accepts Luo Xiao’s apology and distinguishes the youth’s courage from his grandfather’s misconduct. Nevertheless, he is ruthless toward enemies who threaten those under his protection 19 20 40.
Family and cultivation are his two stated reasons for continuing: finding his separated wives and discovering where the path beyond Dou Di leads. Their endangered Soul Imprints trouble him more deeply than threats to his own life 3 26 43.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Mantra and Fire Control
The Flame Mantra evolves by devouring Heavenly Flames. After assimilation, Xiao Yan retains its defining properties in his pale-golden Spiritual Energy 5 16 47.
- Devours and refines external spirit flames, including those used in Luo Feng’s banquet challenge 24 25.
- Splits fire into hundreds of controlled strands and performs a display involving more than ten thousand lamps 25 29.
- Uses flame to stabilize blood fiend poisoning and destroy the Blood Sacrifice Array 26 38.
- Initially cannot circulate the method safely during assimilation: doing so intensifies the internal energy conflict 5.
Reverse Scale Spirit-Guiding Method
Luo Tianshen’s method guides assimilation while protecting the practitioner’s essential cultivation core. Xiao Yan extends its original three layers with his own fourth layer 14 15 42.
- Preserves the fire origin accumulated through decades of cultivation 16.
- Guides incoming Spiritual Energy and eventually connects his own energy to the world’s currents 25 29 30.
- Uses yin–yang balance to reduce conflict between Dou Qi and Spiritual Energy 42.
- Requires precise identification of the core; a mistaken choice can ruin the practitioner’s cultivation 16.
Emperor Realm Soul
His soul power remains his principal support when his physical cultivation is damaged 6.
- Repairs and stabilizes damaged meridians 6 40.
- Detects pursuers, hidden intruders, and submerged spiritual beasts 11 31 33.
- Performs extremely fine Spirit Mark inscription inside his own meridians 12.
- Identifies a faint fingertip Spiritual Energy imprint on a sabotaged pill 27.
- Supports offensive soul attacks, including the rescue of Luo Xiao from Xue Shi 38.
- Has a reduced effective range in the plane passage compared with the Dou Qi Continent 1.
Alchemy and Pill Patterns
Already capable of refining Ninth-grade Pills on the Dou Qi Continent, Xiao Yan adapts his techniques to unfamiliar ingredients and Pill Patterns 12 22 23.
- Combines fire-based medicinal sealing with Spirit Marks to create the Fire Pattern Pill, succeeding on his seventh batch after six failures 23 24.
- Refines medicine against Blood Erosion Powder and blood baleful Qi 27.
- Studies local herbs and teaches Luo Lan to identify them 31.
- Shares the Fire Pattern Pill recipe and improved Blood Erosion Powder treatment with Elder Qin 48.
- Cannot rely indefinitely on imported pills, which lose medicinal power under the Great Thousand World’s Spiritual Energy 6 11.
Dou Techniques
- Flame Splitting Wave Ruler: Releases layered waves of flame through the Heavy Xuan Ruler. At 10% assimilation, one use nearly exhausts his available Spiritual Energy; later, he improves its execution by following the world’s energy currents 19 38.
- Eight Extremes Collapse: Stacks eight bodily tremors into a concentrated strike. Remains usable when his Spiritual Energy is almost exhausted 19.
- Three Thousand Lightning Movement: Produces rapid movement and afterimages; Xiao Yan finds it more nimble when powered by Spiritual Energy 28.
- Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus: Compresses mutually opposing flames into an explosive lotus. Against Xue Shi, he combines Xiao Yi’s pink fire, Mysterious Yin Ice Flame, and his pale-golden Flame Mantra fire using Spirit Marks. The process severely damages his hands 2 39 40.
Spirit Marks and Formations
- Exploits an existing Bewildering Tracks Array to conceal himself from four Blood God Clan pursuers; the hiding place would not withstand a careful search indefinitely 11.
- Uses Yin-Separating Marks to guide a wisp of Mysterious Yin Ice Flame into his body, although five of seven marks shatter under its cold 36.
- Creates a personalized wood-affinity cultivation method for A Heng and reforges a bronze cauldron into a lamp containing his source flame 49.
