Background

Lin Yi transmigrates into the body of a young man with the same name after an assassination attempt. His inherited memories identify him as Muzhi, the only son and heir of Lin Rusong, Prince of Northern Liang. His new world has a different history from his original one, despite its familiar dynastic warfare 1.

The original heir was physically frail and notorious for fighting, trickery, and visiting brothels. Nevertheless, his memories distinguish this unruly behavior from oppressing ordinary people. Lin Rusong doted on him, supplied seven maids to accompany him, and encouraged play rather than training him through scholarly texts or martial manuals 1.

Lin Rusong later explains that he had hoped his son could live as an ordinary person, fearing that an incapable successor would be destroyed by Li Anlan after his death. The assassination occurs while the prince is investigating border unrest and Lin Yi has been left in charge of Northern Liang City 1 12.

Personality

Lin Yi places personal loyalty above inherited connections or reputation. He distinguishes sharply between servants loyal to his father and people willing to follow him personally. Although he uses intimidation to demand obedience, he also rewards valuable service generously and believes that loyalty must ultimately be demonstrated through action rather than oaths 5 6 11 15.

He is ruthless toward enemies and unwilling to leave an insult unanswered. His purge kills more than three thousand people, while his retaliation against the Ran Clan deliberately stops short of killing its leaders. He is also willing to accuse opponents without adequate evidence: despite knowing Cao Shen was absent from the assassins’ list, he labels him an accomplice for intervening on the suspects’ behalf 18 20 34.

His ambition extends beyond inheriting his father’s position. He wants to build Xiliang through his own achievements, while recognizing the responsibility attached to Northern Liang’s future. His concern for Lin Rusong’s health and his offer of valuable ginseng show a more affectionate side than his public threats suggest 25 39 40.

Lin Yi enjoys praise and frequently presents himself with exaggerated righteousness. He publicly denies arranging the Ran Clan attack, claiming to be famously kindhearted, and describes his system-driven martial transformation as an “epiphany” 32 33 34.

Abilities & Skills

Winning People Over with Virtue System

The system rewards Lin Yi for securing submission or admiration through moral, civil, or martial means. Force is explicitly permitted; its definition of “virtue” does not require peaceful persuasion 2.

  • Personal rewards: Winning over individuals can produce attribute enhancements, equipment, supplies, or other rewards 4 9 11.
  • Military rewards: Defeating organized forces commonly yields troops, allowing conquest to expand his army 9 45.
  • Popular support: The admiration of Northern Liang City’s residents unlocks a city-level gift pack 25.
  • Repeated rewards: A follower’s deepening admiration can trigger additional rewards, as demonstrated by Wang Yue 34.
  • Control requirement: His father’s title and possessions do not automatically count as Lin Yi’s own holdings 2.

Martial Strength

His first direct enhancements add 250 jin of strength to each arm. A much greater transformation follows when he activates the Young Lü Bu Equipment Card 4 34.

  • Gains strengthened joints, surging physical power, and a sharper gaze upon activation 34.
  • Believes a full-strength punch could overwhelm an ox; this is his assessment rather than a demonstrated feat 34.
  • His improvement is immediately perceptible to Wang Yue, who interprets it as an extraordinary martial breakthrough 34.
  • Before this transformation, he prefers protection by expert retainers and has no intention of personally charging into battle 11.

Salt Refining and Finance

The ancient salt-making technique allows Lin Yi to turn a supposedly worthless poisonous salt deposit into a major source of revenue 3 30 31.

  • Removes the impurities responsible for making the rock salt poisonous 31.
  • Entrusts production and security to Jia Xu, rather than managing the operation alone 31.
  • Markets refined salt below the price of coarse salt, devastating the Ran Clan’s competing trade 38 39.
  • Intends the proceeds to fund recruitment, weapons research, and army provisions 29.

Intelligence and Operational Planning

Lin Yi uses the Net, led by Wang Yue, to monitor enemies and prepare campaigns 15 16 34.

  • Requires the organization to recruit from his own trusted personnel 16.
  • Orders surveillance of the Ran Clan and unusual activity throughout Northern Liang City 15.
  • Sends agents into Xiliang before his arrival to investigate its factions and terrain 35 48.
  • Splits his journey into a visible procession and a concealed party, with troops already dispersed along the route 40.

Governance and Mobilization

His rule combines coercive suppression with measures designed to secure ordinary people’s support.

  • Distributes land to hired farmhands, drawing workers away from Ran Clan estates 21 22.
  • Delegates Xiliang’s administration and campaign coordination to Jia Xu 44.
  • Plans to train suitable Yellow Turban recruits and assign the remainder to agriculture 45 49.
  • Publicly introduces potatoes and sweet potatoes, claiming yields above three thousand jin per mu and up to eight thousand under proper care; these yields have not yet been demonstrated in the supplied chapters 49.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Firearm — A personal defensive weapon supplied with only nine bullets. Lin Yi later calls it a musket and considers it more useful for his protection than retaining a sword 3 34.
  • Peerless Heavenly Silkworm Treasure Armor — Bound armor made from legendary heavenly silkworm silk. Extremely thin and light, it can be equipped or removed by thought and is described as impervious to blades, spears, water, and fire 11.
  • Tactical sandbox — A scaled-down map of the world, useful for military planning and understanding unfamiliar geography 9.
  • The Legacy of Wumu — A military strategy text he gives Ma Chao to study. Following Jia Xu’s warning, he restricts access to trusted people 26.
  • Heaven-Relying Sword — A blade capable of cutting iron like mud. Lin Yi gives it to Wang Yue, judging that it will accomplish more in an expert swordsman’s hands 34.
  • Golden-silk soft armor, two suits — Captured protective garments awarded to Ma Chao and Han Song for their service 11.
  • Weapons and equipment for nearly fifty thousand men — Supplied by Wang Ziwen before the move to Xiliang; Lin Yi suspects his father provided them rather than their all being recent spoils 39.

Relationships

  • Lin Rusong — Father and Prince of Northern Liang. His indulgent upbringing gives way to a succession trial when he appoints Lin Yi governor of Xiliang, with Northern Liang cavalry stationed nearby as support 1 24.
  • His mother — Killed by the Northern Region barbarians. Lin Yi invokes avenging her as his reason for refusing the imperial marriage and later considers doing so a genuine future objective 1 23 25.
  • Ma Chao — Summoned general and principal cavalry commander. Lin Yi rewards him with armor, entrusts him with The Legacy of Wumu, and agrees to finance improvements to his cavalry 7 11 26 37.
  • Wang Yue — Expert swordsman, protector, and leader of the Net. Carries out Lin Yi’s retaliation against the Ran Clan and receives the Heaven-Relying Sword 9 34.
  • Jia Xu — Trusted strategist and administrator. Oversees salt production, Xiliang’s governance, and the Yellow Turban forces; also orchestrates public demonstrations of support 31 44 49.
  • Han Song — Commander of the prince’s residence guards. Initially cautious about Lin Yi’s purge, he becomes personally devoted after receiving armor, but his post prevents him from accompanying Lin Yi to Xiliang 5 11 39.
  • Wang Ziwen — Northern Liang’s chief steward, addressed as “Uncle Wang.” Proud of Lin Yi’s maturation, he defends the purge, conveys Lin Rusong’s instructions, and equips the Xiliang expedition 24 26 33 39.
  • Haitang — Maid who attends his recovery, brings him food, and voices concerns about the dangers surrounding him 2 3 48.
  • Zhang Long and Zhao Hu — Followers disciplined for abandoning him during the assassination attempt. Their local knowledge later proves useful in interrogations and acquiring the salt mine 3 4 18 29.
  • Wang Zitao — Friend who calls him Muzhi. Shares his hostility toward Ran Chao and approves of his retaliation against would-be assassins 32 33.
  • Li Anlan — Emperor of Great Ning and an emerging adversary. Lin Yi regards the proposed imperial marriage as a means to hold him hostage and pressure his father 16 23.
  • Princess Shenle — Li Anlan’s eldest daughter and intended bride under the imperial decree. Lin Yi refuses to accompany the envoy to the capital; no personal meeting is shown 23 25.
  • Ran Zijin and Ran Chao — Political and commercial enemies. Lin Yi retaliates against them through Wang Yue and overturns their poisonous-salt scheme 14 31 34 39.
  • Zhou Cang — System-rewarded general who publicly pledges his life and service to Lin Yi while leading the Yellow Turban followers 45 49.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Securing Northern Liang City

After awakening, Lin Yi finds that Han Song’s search has failed to locate the assassins. Suspecting infiltration and unreliable loyalties, he demands personal allegiance and deploys Ma Chao, the Xiliang Iron Cavalry, and the Northern Liang Guard against the city’s hostile factions 2 5 7.

The campaign destroys the Heavenly Eagle Guard, Blue Flower Brothel, Snow Cloud Manor, and other targets. Its severity frightens the remaining factions into submission, while confiscated wealth supplies Lin Yi with substantial resources. He subsequently turns officials seeking to restrain him into assassination suspects and has them arrested 9 11 17 18 20.

Land distribution helps change his reputation among commoners from an ignorant wastrel to an heir who brings peace and practical benefits. Their admiration completes the system’s Northern Liang Royal City objective 21 22 25.

Defying the Imperial Marriage

Li Anlan responds with a decree granting Lin Yi the title of Marquis of Xiliang and selecting him as Princess Shenle’s consort. Lin Yi interprets the apparently favorable offer as an attempt to separate him from Northern Liang and confine him in the capital 23.

He refuses the marriage by declaring that he cannot start a family before defeating the barbarians who killed his mother. Soon afterward, Lin Rusong appoints him governor of Xiliang as a test of his fitness to inherit Northern Liang 23 24.

Retaliation Against the Ran Clan

After learning that the Ran Clan is implicated in the assassination attempt, Lin Yi orders surveillance and arranges a retaliatory attack. Wang Yue severely wounds Ran Zijin without killing him and brings back banknotes taken from Ran Chao. Lin Yi publicly denies responsibility before privately confirming his involvement 14 15 33 34.

The clan also tries to exploit the sale of a poisonous salt mine to his followers. Lin Yi instead purifies its salt and sells the refined product cheaply, turning the trap into a lucrative enterprise while undermining Ran Clan businesses 28 30 31 38 39.

Establishing Xiliang

Lin Yi approaches Xiliang as a base he must secure for himself, not merely inherit. After investigating the contested former Dayu Pass, he travels disguised as a wealthy merchant’s son while Ma Chao leads the visible procession in his name 35 39 40.

Local powers prepare resistance under Zhuo Feifan, but Lin Yi’s advance intelligence and bandit-clearing operations disrupt their plans. He orders threats within a hundred li eliminated, assigns administration to Jia Xu, and reaches a dilapidated government office rather than a completed governor’s residence 42 44 45 48.

Jia Xu then stages the Yellow Turban forces’ public arrival as a demonstration that Lin Yi represents hope for Xiliang. Lin Yi promises food security and announces high-yield crops. As he assesses the major clans, he marks Zhuo Feifan for exemplary punishment while weighing Wang Chengfei’s cooperation and Duan Yingxiong’s admiration for his father 49 50.
