History

Unification and Northern Liang’s Submission

Great Ning emerged victorious from a period in which competing Central Plains lords struggled for supremacy. Before its unification, Northern Liang had been left exposed to northern barbarian invasions. Lin Rusong led its people in a successful war of revenge and became their ruler 1.

To spare Northern Liang further warfare, Lin Rusong submitted to Great Ning. The emperor recognized him as Prince of Northern Liang and entrusted him with thirty thousand troops to defend against the Northern Barbarians and the Western Regions states. Northern Liang recovered and grew prosperous over the following decade 1.

Li Anlan later took power through rebellion. During his seizure of the palace, Wei Kuang distinguished himself fighting on his behalf 295.

Rivalry with the Lin Clan

Northern Liang’s substantial autonomy became a source of tension with the imperial court. After surviving an assassination attempt, Lin Yi suspected that Great Ning might be moving against his family. His subsequent purge of Northern Liang City eliminated Great Ning Guard operatives as well as other hostile agents; Lin Rusong prepared to defend the killings before the court as action against assassins 5 13.

As Lin Yi developed Xiliang, he initially avoided an open break with Great Ning because its national military resources far exceeded what he could safely overcome and occupy. He instead sought to expand against the Northern Barbarians before confronting the dynasty 121.

The resulting balance involved three major powers: Great Ning, Northern Liang, and the Northern Barbarians. Lin Yi deliberately spared Tuoba Yu’s retreating forces on one occasion so that the barbarians could continue tying down Great Ning 181.

Imperial Consolidation

Li Anlan regarded the princes and the Lin Clan as threats to his authority. He placed the Great Ning Guard and Shadow under Wei Kuang, merging them into the Blood Guard, and authorized action against the Princes of Min and Shu 295 296.

The elimination of both princes brought their regions within the emperor’s reach and intimidated the court into obedience. Princess Shenle nevertheless judged that these measures had damaged the imperial clan’s loyalty and weakened its ability to restrain the great aristocratic families 345 351 371.

At sea, Li Anlan attempted to revive the neglected navy through large-scale training and the participation of great clans in ocean fishing. Lin Yi countered by secretly appointing Guan Yu to build a fleet at Sea Liang Island without revealing its connection to Xiliang 301 345.

War with Xiliang

After Xiliang’s victories over the Northern Barbarians, Li Anlan endorsed an accusation that Xun Yu had rebelled and announced a five-hundred-thousand-man expedition ostensibly to assist Lin Yi. Shangguan Yun received command, with Li Ruyu as deputy. Meanwhile, Lin Rusong marched south with three hundred thousand Northern Liang troops 411.

Shangguan Yun’s offensive against Great Ning Port failed against its fortified riverbank, ranged weapons, and Gan Ning’s navy. Within Great Ning, commoners questioned the decision to open another war while the country already faced multiple threats 428 429.

Lin Yi subsequently declared war and mobilized a million troops along five routes. Denunciations of Li Anlan, rumors questioning his ancestry, and predictions portraying him as a calamity-bearing demonic star spread unrest across the dynasty 443.

Major event Outcome
Fall of Xuanyi City Explosives breached the walls, and Ning Kun’s army was destroyed or forced to surrender. Ning Kun died, removing a principal defender of the northern approaches 449 452 457.
Loss of the Northwestern Circuit Pang De combined his army with Western Regions troops, secured four commanderies, and purged Li Anlan’s loyalists 456.
Raid toward the capital After Fishtail Pass opened, Ma Chao led a hundred thousand Xiliang Iron Cavalry into the capital’s territory 457.
Fall of Wuning Xiliang’s river assault overcame Shangguan Yun’s army. Shangguan Yun and Li Ruyu were subsequently reported dead 466 475.
Southern intervention Jiang Li and the southern chieftains allied with Xiliang and sent two hundred thousand troops toward the Shu Region 475.

Collapse

At the capital, Li Anlan tried to restore his soldiers’ morale with promises of promotion by three ranks and a thousand taels of gold. His defenders launched massed archery attacks and cavalry strikes against Xiliang’s flanks 498.

The defense broke after Qu Yi’s catapults bombarded the archers with explosive iron canisters. Xiliang’s armies then overran Great Ning’s positions, while Lin Rusong breached Vermilion Bird Gate and Jia Xu entered through Qingfeng Gate to surround the imperial city 499 500.

Great Ning’s force of three hundred thousand fell below one hundred thousand in less than an hour, and most surviving soldiers surrendered. Li Anlan acknowledged defeat, laid down arms with his remaining followers, and went to meet Lin Yi 500.

Resistance continued in the south after the central defeat. By the time Jiang Li learned that Lin Yi had founded Great Liang, Great Ning’s remaining Shu forces were being routed by the Tiger and Leopard Cavalry, and Great Liang had dispatched five hundred thousand troops against Crown Prince Li Qiankun 512.

Geography and Strategic Locations

Great Ning possessed numerous fortified cities, making siege warfare more important than in the open territories of the Northern Barbarians 444.

Location Significance
Northern Liang Northern frontier domain under Lin Rusong, responsible for defense against the Northern Barbarians and Western Regions states 1.
Xiliang Contested frontier where Great Ning and the Northern Barbarians had been unable to secure complete control; later developed into Lin Yi’s power base 35 121.
Great Ning River Major river running through the empire, reaching dozens of li in width at its broadest points. It became a central battlefield during the Wuning campaign 459 460.
Liangshan Pass Barrier against Northern Liang’s southward advance that could also block movement east from Xining 457.
Mountain and River Pass Northern defensive gateway attacked by two hundred thousand Northern Barbarians; later selected as Jia Xu’s route into Great Ning 141 428.
Great Wasteland and Youning Commanderies Strategic eastern approaches guarded by Ning Kun against Xiliang’s expansion 385.
Fishtail Mountain Range Opening a route through this range allowed Xiliang’s cavalry to threaten the capital directly 444 457.
Wuning Commandery Major riverfront theater defended by Shangguan Yun and Li Ruyu 457 458.
Min and Shu Regions Territories associated with the two Li-family feudal princes targeted by Li Anlan 345 351.
Southeastern coast Poorly defended coastline vulnerable to repeated landings by the fleet operating as East Sea pirates 385.

Government and Politics

Imperial Authority

  • Emperor: Li Anlan controlled the Central Imperial Guard and directed campaigns, intelligence operations, and the suppression of rival princes 141 295 411.
  • Crown prince: Li Qiankun remained a focus of resistance after Li Anlan’s defeat 510 512.
  • Imperial clan administration: Li Ruyu served as Director of the Imperial Clan and advised the emperor on disputes within the ruling house 246.
  • Central offices: The government included the Three Excellencies and Nine Ministers. Zhou Zifeng held the office of Commandant of the Guards, one of the Nine Ministers 1 193.

Feudal Princes and Great Clans

At the time of Lin Rusong’s assessment, Great Ning had three major feudal princes: Northern Liang, Shu, and Min. Lin Rusong alone bore a surname different from the imperial family 141.

The great aristocratic clans exercised substantial influence over local administration and resources. Their cooperation with the throne was conditional: some favored Li Anlan because an emperor dependent on their assistance offered them more leverage than Lin Yi would 268 462.

Xiliang weakened that support through commercial ties, particularly ocean fishing, and by distributing potatoes to commoners. Several northern families and some Wuning clans moved toward submission to Lin Yi before the final conquest 390.

Military

Reported Strength

Lin Rusong estimated Great Ning’s strength at 1.2 million troops, explicitly excluding Northern Liang’s army 141.

Force Estimated strength Control or role
Central Imperial Guard 500,000 Elite army directly controlled by Li Anlan; described as his trump card 141.
Feudal princes’ forces 500,000 Forces held by the other princes within the estimate 141.
Commandery and county forces 200,000 Regular regional troops 141.
Total 1,200,000 Excludes Northern Liang 141.

Great Ning could not freely concentrate this entire strength. It had to guard against the Northern Barbarians, southern chieftains, Northern Liang, Western Regions states, and unrest connected to former feudal domains 415.

Forces and Capabilities

  • Xining Army: An elite formation commanded by Cai Yu, deployed toward Jushi to oppose Xiliang’s expansion 296 384.
  • Ning Kun’s army: A major northern force. Ning Kun had previously defeated two hundred thousand enemies with one hundred thousand troops and penetrated deep into barbarian territory 181.
  • Blood Guard: Intelligence and enforcement organization formed by merging the Great Ning Guard and Shadow under Wei Kuang 295.
  • Great Ning Navy: Initially neglected, with few warships and limited ocean activity. Its attempted revival ended in a devastating defeat against the fleet operating as pirates 254 301 358.
  • Heavy cavalry: Great Ning was among the few powers considered wealthy enough to field heavily armored cavalry 404.

Equipment and Limitations

  • Great Ning’s weapons and siege equipment substantially surpassed those of the Northern Barbarians 181.
  • Against Xiliang, that advantage was reversed: Xiliang’s ship-mounted ballistae and catapults attacked from beyond Great Ning’s effective range 458.
  • Great Ning’s armor could not reliably withstand the Divine Arm Bow, while ordinary arrows struggled against Xiliang’s layered shield formations 459.
  • Explosives proved decisive against both city walls and concentrated archers 449 499 500.

Foreign Relations

  • Northern Barbarians — Relations alternated between war and accommodation. After Great Ning invaded Tuoba Wanli’s homeland, Li Anlan recognized him as King of the Grasslands and bestowed rewards. The appointment of the culturally pro-Ning Li Dahai as barbarian prime minister also eased relations 117.
  • Jushi Kingdom — Great Ning-made equipment was recovered from Jushi’s defeated army, and Cai Yu’s Xining Army had been sent to support the kingdom 275 296.
  • Southern native chieftains — Great Ning had arranged native chieftainships, but conflict persisted. The chieftains ultimately allied with Xiliang during the dynasty’s collapse 475 525.
  • Zhennan Dynasty — Zhennan had previously cooperated with the southern chieftains to cause trouble for Great Ning 525.

Legacy

  • Dynastic succession: Lin Yi replaced Great Ning with Great Liang, uniting northern and southern territories under the new dynasty 500 512 567.
  • Imperial relics: Great Ning’s jade seal and the Li imperial genealogy were recovered from Li Anlan’s hidden trove. Lin Yi dismissed the genealogy as incomplete and declined to investigate everyone recorded in it 598.
  • Nautical intelligence: The same trove contained a chart showing routes to the Yamata Nation and mineral deposits. Lin Yi ordered copies made and the information verified 598.
  • Former subjects in Great Liang: Service under Great Ning did not automatically disqualify a family from office. Lin Yi praised examination candidate Huang Longsi despite his father’s former allegiance and affirmed that capable people would be employed regardless of origin 841.
