Nature and Mechanics

Chakra is the energy source for ninjutsu and dōjutsu. Human users extract it from their cells, store and deploy it through the Undersea Wheel, then shape it into techniques. Ōtsutsuki physiology differs: chakra flows freely throughout their entire bodies, making their bodies themselves natural chakra containers. 189

• Chakra reserves directly affect the scale and endurance of techniques. Boruto's initially limited reserves restrict him to three Shadow Clones and a reduced Rasengan. 1 3
• Chakra can be shaped through hand seals into ninjutsu, including Shadow Clones, Rasengan, elemental releases, barriers, sealing techniques, and space-time techniques. 1 18 65

Types and Transformations

Personal Chakra

A shinobi's own chakra is extracted from the body and can be strengthened through cultivation, bloodline fusion, or the neutralization of multiple kekkei genkai. 189 203

• Boruto's personal chakra later develops a red coloration after his powers merge, becoming stronger than the amplification provided by his prior two-colored Sage Mode and exceeding Kurama's chakra in output. 204
• Chakra natures can be combined or refined into new techniques, such as Boruto's Yang Lightning and Saturn Rasengan. 34 206

Sage Chakra

Sage Chakra is created by combining natural energy with personal chakra in a one-to-one ratio while maintaining complete stillness. Failure to control the balance can cause petrification. 7

• It enhances physical durability, speed, perception, and ninjutsu. In Sage Mode, ordinary weapons cannot injure Boruto. 15

Tailed Beast Chakra

Tailed Beast Chakra is chakra originating from the nine Tailed Beasts and can be shared, extracted, or merged with a jinchūriki's own power. 35 154

Ōtsutsuki Chakra

Ōtsutsuki chakra is distinguished by enormous reserves and direct bodily use. Their chakra can be applied to physical enhancement, regeneration, speed, and destructive energy attacks without relying on conventional human chakra deployment. 175 189

• The Ōtsutsuki's reserves are stated to be dozens or hundreds of times greater than a human's. 189

Chakra Fruits and the God Tree

God Trees process chakra to produce Chakra Fruits. Despite the existence of forests containing many fruits, each individual God Tree can only filter enough chakra for one fruit. 214

• Chakra Fruits do not grant true eternal life; they freeze the consumer's connection to chakra. 214
• Chakra Fruits are considered a high-level, purified form of natural energy and may grant partial resistance to Sage Mode. 210

Absorption, Suppression, and Depletion

• Chakra absorption does not always work equally well against refined chakra. White Zetsu can absorb Boruto's Saturn Rasengan only slowly because its chakra is too refined to break down quickly. 206
• Truth-Seeking Ball transformations can evade conventional ninjutsu absorption because their altered forms are treated as nature transformations rather than ordinary ninjutsu. 97
