Background

Miyuki and her older brother, Tatsuya Shiba, belong to the Yotsuba Family. Despite being born in different years, they enter First High School together. Miyuki is selected as the incoming student representative, while Tatsuya enters Course 2—a placement she strongly disputes because she considers his academic, martial, and magical abilities exceptional 1 3 16.

Her family position threatens the life she wants with Tatsuya. Miyuki does not want to return to the Yotsuba household or be separated from him. The family regards her as a means of keeping Tatsuya under its control, making her continued connection to him politically important as well as personally significant 72 111.

Personality

Miyuki’s strongest attachment is to Tatsuya. She openly admires him, rejects judgments based on his Course 2 placement, and wants others to recognize his abilities. Her affection includes romantic fantasies and jealousy toward people who seem unusually close to him. She envies affectionate gestures she wishes he would direct toward her 4 17 22 45.

Her protectiveness can override his wishes: she petitions for his admission to the Student Council and later accepts a Public Morals Committee position on his behalf before he can answer. Nevertheless, she also recognizes that he needs friends and welcomes the growing appreciation of his technical skills 18 81 113.

Miyuki is confident in her talent but willing to acknowledge shortcomings. She seeks Chiba Yeyou’s instruction because becoming merely an outstanding magician is not enough for her; she wants the strength to help Tatsuya. She also values fair competition, deliberately avoiding advance study of Shizuku Kitayama’s tactics before their expected encounter 20 43 110.

Despite their importance to her, Miyuki does not tell Tatsuya everything. She keeps Chiba’s shared-perception ability secret and initially conceals her request to learn his advanced simultaneous-casting method 64 72.

• Sequence recognition: Can distinguish familiar from unfamiliar Magic Sequences while their data is being entered, having watched Tatsuya tune her CAD at home. She cannot necessarily identify the exact spell from that data 72.
• Magical sensitivity: Notices nearby psion activity when Chiba deploys Quantum Domain and recognizes Tatsuya’s familiar Material Burst 19 67.

Entrance and Student Council Recruitment

Miyuki delivers the incoming students’ address at First High School. Her association with Tatsuya and his Course 2 friends soon becomes a point of contention when Shun Morisaki’s group confronts them at the school gate 3 11.

Mayumi invites her onto the Student Council under the tradition of recruiting the freshman representative. Miyuki asks that Tatsuya be admitted too, but council regulations exclude Course 2 students. She accepts the secretary position and enthusiastically accepts his subsequent Public Morals Committee offer on his behalf 18.

Training under Chiba Yeyou

Laboratory testing exposes the gap between Miyuki’s tremendous output and her precision. Chiba helps her observe her own spell construction and redirects her training toward controlled temperature, reduced coverage, and efficient psion use 19 20 21.

After several days of guidance, she explicitly asks to become his student. Later, when she requests his closely guarded parallel-casting technique, he requires her to publicly acknowledge him as her teacher. She leaves conflicted; subsequent events confirm that he teaches her the method, although mastery remains elusive 43 72 107.

Blanche Incident

Miyuki challenges Sayaka Mibu’s belief that magical talent determines a student’s entire worth. She points to Tatsuya’s recognition of Mibu’s swordsmanship and appearance, arguing that Mibu is denying valuable parts of herself 52.

When intruders create a diversion and Mibu flees, Miyuki raises her CAD to intervene. She stops at Tatsuya’s request, allowing him to leave the interception to someone waiting downstairs 52.

Nine Schools Competition

Miyuki supports Tatsuya’s appointment as a technician and takes part in the send-off rally by pinning badges on First High’s representatives 56 61.

In Icicle Destruction, she defeats Fourth High’s Ayaka Shimizu with Extreme Cold Region, drawing astonishment at its activation speed. Against Shizuku, she counters a surprise Phonon Maser attack with Niflheim and destroys the remaining icicles using high heat 112 113 116.

During the competition, she also realizes that Chiba knows more about her and Tatsuya’s family identities than he has openly explained 111.

Relic Investigation

Miyuki accompanies Tatsuya to the FLT laboratory during a cyberattack targeting the magatama Relic. Tatsuya tells her that Chiba warned him about the Relic, while acknowledging how little they actually know about Chiba 148.
